I started my journey in November of 2011. I had a seminar with Signature Health who was affiliated with Tufts Medical Center in Boston. I finally got an appointment with a nutritionist in February 2012. Because I has Cigna I had to do a three month supervised weight loss program with my primary care physician. This was after going back and forth with the insurance company and Signature Health on what was required. I finally completed the weight loss program in October of 2012. Then it was trying to get Signature Health to call me back. The coordinator never answered her phone and from the beginning I felt she really did not want to deal with me because of my insurance. I finally contacted them only to be told since they were no longer affiliated with Tufts I needed to go elsewhere. In JUne of 2013 I met with Dr. MCCluney of St Elizabeth's Medical Center. I had the prerequisite tests done. What should had been a one visit mental health referral turned into months of therapy. After 3 months of them promising to write an evaluation only to have more requirements needed, I finally got another doctor who gave me a referral after one visit. Finally, going through final approval from my insurance company where my surgery would have been in November of 2013.
Now I needed a clearance from my primary. Blood tests showed I had Hepatitis C. Went to a gastroenterologist and had an ultrasound of my liver. From that they found an abdominal mass. After a CT scan found a huge mass on my ovaries. From there to an gynecologic oncologist. Bariatric surgery now on hold. Had major surgery in March of 2013 and after three and a half months was cleared for bariatric surgery.
Back to Dr. MCCluney where I was given the green light for surgery. Just as I was leaving for vacation I got a rejection from the insurance company. I wanted to cry. Luckily the doctor's office had already appealed. I finally got a date of September 24, 2014. Surgery went well. Twelve days later had an appointment with my surgeon and I am down 18 pounds and am finally under 300 pounds!
