Hi there! I'm from Queens NY. I think you should first start by calling your insurance to confirm that they cover weight loss surgery. Ask what the requirements are. And the. Ask for them to recommend a surgeon in your area.

Telling people at work
Sleeve_Sistah85 replied to littlewing1203's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also in healthcare but only taking off 2 weeks. That's what my insurance told me what was needed. My director knows because she makes the schedule, but none of my other co-workers know...but I'm sure they'll figure it out. One of the nursing assistants dropped a lot of weight last year after being out a whole month and it was clear she had WLS. When I asked her how she did it she replied " I drank a lot of Protein shakes." I knew she was covering it up because I have been contemplating WLS for 10 years but I left her alone because she has the right to privacy. Later on I was in the conference room and she didn't know I was there and I heard her tell a nurse that she has the sleeve. I take vacations 4-5 times a year anyways so I'm sure people will think I just went away. The problem is I won't be posting on FB so I guess they'll suspect something. I don't care anymore. I just want some help :-( -

PatchMD vs Bariatric Advantage
Sleeve_Sistah85 replied to NJGuy78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also interested in knowing about the patches. I follow people on Facebook for the BP Mexico group who say their lab work comes out great with the patches. But when I asked the PA at my surgeons office she insisted on regular vitamins. I just don't think I can remember to take them and am really interested in the patches. -

Now I understand why we dont tell people we are getting the sleeve...
Sleeve_Sistah85 replied to Scottyd1264's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So far I have told ONE family member, my boss and ONE close friend. All of whom are supportive of my decision. I attempted to tell my sister and she was very ignorant and negative with her comments like "you aren't that big" or "you don't need surgery"...I'm 260lbs!!! When should I get surgery?. ..the time is now, I don't wanna get bigger. I really wanna tell my other best friend but she has a big mouth and a little bit of jealousy. I just can't trust her right now. Once I start losing the weight I will share with her. She's also in the 250's with crazy blood pressure and could definitely benefit from it. -

I got a similar comment from a co-worker...I mentioned something about a low carb diet and she says something like "I hope your not going for that weight loss surgery"...I just said ha ha and walked away -

Omg! I haven't told my dad either. He's a very old fashion Jamaican and hates western medicine. When I was in high school my cousin came up from Jamaica and she was hospitalized for some rare medical condition and died after surgery. My dad would FLIP his lid if I told him. I plan to keep it from him as long as possible. I love him dearly but he just wouldn't understand. -
Mothers, Weight, and Self Worth. All about Mom!
Sleeve_Sistah85 replied to bellabloom's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It's such an unfortunate relief to hear these stories. I never had a great relationship with my mom. I was raised by my older sister because my mother suffered from depression since she was sexually abused as a child. Unfortunately my sister passed away when I was 11 and I had to go live with my mother. Now..everyone in my family is overweight and obese and my mothers way of showing affection was to feed me as much as I wanted. Despite her being fat too every now and then she takes a stab at my weight which I used to ignore cuz she's fat too, but once I got older and started to try and lose weight it hurt that I wasn't losing and she was making fun of me. She would make comments like "you're too fat to wear that"...made me so self conscious as a teenager. I'm so grateful for the department store Torrid because it gave me so much confidence in college and I was able to see myself beautiful. Unfortunately my mom waited until I was damn near 30 to try and get close with me. She NOW tells me that I'm beautiful...but I kinda feel like it's too late. -

Anyone's first surgery?
Sleeve_Sistah85 replied to sarinemaniss's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date is Jan 11th and yes, it will be my first. Ive been a nurse for 8 years, worked in the ICU, now working in L&D and that made me nervous at first. I think I know too much. But now that the date is so close Im just ready to get it over with. I try and put myself in the mindset of a person who is NOT a healthcare worker and just learn the basics of the sleeve. -
