I didn't even put pants on for about a week. Seriously. Everyone is different, though. My best friend drove home from the hospital and went to see her son's play that night, 2 days post-op. But from games I've been to, there is a lot of walking involved in getting inside and getting to your seat. And jostling around with crowds. Focus on taking care of yourself and catching the games another time.

promise of not feeling hungry
AmyC65 replied to Homecie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt hungry all the time, too. But I've gotten my reflux meds tweeked & that feeling has gone away considerably. See if Tums helps the 'hungry' once in a while. I do still get genuinely hungry, but it's much less now. -
Wearing a medical bracelet after bypass surgery
AmyC65 replied to catdaddy's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Wow, I'm glad I checked out the boards today. My husband and 2 best friends have all had the surgery and never have I heard anything about the need for the bracelets. Very interesting and something we definitely have to think about. Thanks everyone! -
Oh, man. I didn't even leave the house for weeks! Yes, give yourself a break. Even at a few weeks, when I went out and about by myself, I was wiped out by a few hours. I would go for a brisk walk in the mornings, get showered and out the door. And about an hour into errands, I thought I'd need to nap in the car b/c I couldn't even make it home! But you've got to drink, even if you don't want to. And you do need calories & Protein. I'm 3 months out and I still have a shake in the mornings to be sure I'll have enough protein that day. Play around with different brands - maybe a plant-based protein would suit you better? My favorite at the moment is vanilla unjury with a few teaspoons of espresso powder blended with milk. It's the only way I can drink caffeine b/c of reflux and the espresso taste masks the whey taste. Good luck and go slow!

I really don't have much of a goal in either weight or size. All I thought was that I'd like to shop in "normal" stores. I was a 16W-18W pre-surg and I'm wearing my smaller 16W jeans now, all of them are nearly falling off of me. But I'm afraid to go shopping and be discouraged if "regular" sizes still don't fit. I haven't shopped or even tried on anything, but my husband keeps telling me I can't wear this-or-that because it's so huge. Oh, I did buy some leggings at costco and he talked me into getting Large, and I thought he was crazy but I wear them all the time now. I need to get to the gym and work on my toning - I have lost 45 but I am so squishy, I'm sure I'd trim down size-wise if I firmed up. I really had the surgery b/c I was too young to be on so many meds. Once they said I had diabetes,I knew I had to do something. So I am off all my meds now, I have met that goal. Everything from here is bonus.

I've been battling reflux ever since my surgery. At first, they did an Upper GI and saw something that "could" be an ulcer, so they told me to double Omeprazole for 6 weeks and return for a 2nd UGI. I had that this week and all is healed (thank God!). But I'm on 40mg TWO times a day. I've started to suspect that maybe Omeprazole itself is giving me reflux? Anyone have any experiences like this? If I take it, I still have heartburn, sometimes all day. But the rare day that I forget to take it? Are not any worse, and sometimes I swear I feel better! Am I crazy?

No, I'm trying so hard to stay away. Which is making healthier eating hard, btw. No, no juices, no red sauce, no spices. Almost no caffeine.

I am just starting to feel like cooking again - 7 weeks out from RNY. I have a few friends who've had the surgery who say they cannot handle rice, even years post-surg. Anyone have this problem? I love rice and I've been wanting to make a stir-fry. I know I shouldn't eat a lot of rice, but a little in there would be nice.
-
I'm 7.5 weeks post RNY and have been scared to death of restaurants. Yesterday was my mom's birthday so we picked Olive Garden b/c I knew they had the Soup lunch deal. I was so happy to eat 2 bites of salad, 6 pieces of calamari and half a bowl of soup (I skimmed out the kale and sausage for Protein and Vitamins, left the broth and potatoes). It felt great to feel like a real person again, and I had no stomach upset all day!

Gallbladder removed with RNY
AmyC65 replied to AmyC65's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for asking. I'm much, MUCH better. I started eating one Activia yogurt a day, and it might just be a coincidence but that day was my last bout of diarrhea. I have been able to expand my diet considerably and I am much more comfortable. I have a lot of gas now, but from other RNY patients I hear that isn't unusual. Some occasional rumbling but the really bad results have gone. Making an effort to have something to eat every 3 hours seems to really have helped, also. I notice I start getting some cramps if I go much longer than that. -
Hi all. I'm 6 weeks post-op from RNY, and they took my gallbladder at the same time. I am having an awful time finding much of anything that I can eat that won't cause awful diarrhea. Not immediately, but maybe 4-5 hours after eating. And once it starts, it does not stop. I have started taking Imodium to stop it, otherwise it will go on for days. My husband and several friends are all RNY successes, none of them has any experience with diarrhea like this. Anyone have any experience with the GB/RNY combo? I'm frustrated, discouraged and wondering if I have messed up my body forever. I can't even be happy about the weight loss because I'm either in the bathroom or in discomfort all the time! thx
-
I don't know what's causing the pain, but if not eating isn't helping then you probably should resume eating. And drinking. Don't deprive your body what it needs for healing. A call to your Dr might be a good idea. Are you gassy? Maybe it's lactose intolerance? Try switching to soy milk? Just guessing, so probably calling Dr is a good idea.

I have only gone to one restaurant 7 weeks post-op, but I just want you to know that if you've lost 52 lbs since August, your co-workers PROBABLY know you had surgery. It is almost impossible to lose that weight non-surgically in that amount of time. I find myself telling more people now than I thought I would. You tell who you want, I'm just guessing that they've probably suspected already.

Because your body went from having, probably, over 2000 calories a day to more like 700 now. I was wiped OUT for weeks and my recovery was very slow, so I sat on the couch A LOT. So I lost whatever muscle mass I had before, making me feel even weaker. I'm 7.5 weeks post-op and about 3 weeks ago I started walking 20 minutes 3-4 mornings a week. To build up my stamina. It's helping, but I still enjoy a nap most days. I'm also off caffeine, which was my best friend pre-surg. Keep with the Vitamins, your body will start adjusting to the new calorie intake.

Nutri-bullet? Which food processors work best?
AmyC65 replied to NicoleSW's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have a bullet and I have found that it makes things VERY airy, like some others here said. I put a little fruit in mine now, so I need something powerful to blend the frozen banana & berries. But I often have to let it sit awhile b/c of the foam on top. I'm 7 weeks post-surg. I didn't blend a whole lot of food, it might not be worth a huge investment. I did soft foods like soups, the veggies are so soft already they can be smooshed with a fork. On my plan, blended foods was a pretty short phase between pure liquids and soft foods. -
Anger & Aggression After Surgery!
AmyC65 replied to Amour.de.lionne's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Any of us who qualify for WLS have most likely been using food to deal with most of our emotions - especially the negative ones - for years. Now that crutch is gone and we are left having to feel our feelings. It makes sense that you might not be equipped to handle them in a healthy way. Sounds like a therapist or psychologist will be helpful to you. Ask your fiance to be patient with you while you learn how to deal with this new lifestyle and new body, I'm sure you'll learn new coping techniques soon! -

Sorry, can't really help you. But there IS a Ladies Only Forum. You might find a better audience for your question there. Good luck to you - and your husband!

It could be too-full? Mine can happen even with Water, and sometimes I wonder if I gulped in some air. It feels like I have to burp but can't. Mine don't last as long, and if I stand with my hands straight up in the air for a few minutes, I might get a little burp that makes me more comfortable.

Help how to slow down
AmyC65 replied to jackie's journey's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
A few of those "too full" incidents really helped me to be aware of my eating. I stop before I'm done, sit for a few minutes then wait and see if I'm full. It definitely hits me after I'm done eating, so I've been in a lot of discomfort a few times. Everything I read says to eat slowly. For me, I hate to really pay attention. Especially if the TV is on, I zone out and can keep eating then be in trouble. -
My husband and best friend are both 2 years post surgery and not a single complication. Living full, healthy, normal lives. What kinds of complications are you reading about? You can always find horror stories if you go looking.

The beginning of my journey
AmyC65 replied to RobinL123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, from watching my best friend and my husband I can say that RNY makes you a real cheap date. ha ha. It sails right through your stomach and absorbs very quickly via your small intestines, I believe. So for people who really love to sit and sip all night long, you can get very drunk. I'm not a drinker, so I'm just observing. -
This is so real now... any advice anyone?
AmyC65 replied to Bigdog56's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
IT sounds like some of your anxiety is about what life will be like afterwards in regards to food. Try to stay focused on the fact that you're doing this to change your relationship with food, not go back to the same eating patterns. Yes, you will eat differently. But it's not worse, it's a chance to be better! My husband had his surgery over 2 years ago, lost 130 lbs. and has kept it off. He feels fantastic and, honestly, he eats just about anything he wants. But less of it and not as often. Will you even knuckle down at a buffet again? No, maybe not. Buffets are sort of a waste of money for us now (I am 7 weeks post-surg) but I think of all the times I left a buffet hating myself, saying "that was stupid". Now I can order one really good meal and enjoy it slowly. And I will do it in MUCH smaller jeans, and I'll be happy with that. Anxieties are normal this close to surgery, and the first few months can be rocky for some people. But you aren't doing this for a quick fix. You're doing it for the rest of your life, so a few months is a small investment to a healthy forever! I'd recommend that your wife be educated on your upcoming diet changes and that you really make it clear to her that you need her support. It will be very hard for you if she is eating pizza and wings while you sip a Protein shake. This is a chance for your whole family to eat healthy, if they aren't already. -
First of all, sllooooowww down! Try putting your shake in a toddler's sippy cup, any bottle that will slow you down. Don't let that pouch stretch out. The hunger signals is a hard part of this process. I am learning to really pay attention to my body - not my brain - and read the signals it is giving me. Is your stomach grumbling? Or are you dizzy, light-headed? Those are hunger signals. Thinking about food isn't hungry, it's craving. At 2 weeks of liquid, everything DOES sound good. But I was afraid enough of being sick that I was able to resist. Try hard to obey the Drs orders, he knows what your body can handle and when.

Protein shakes
AmyC65 replied to debbiesp01@gmail.com's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know around here there is a store called the Vitamin Shoppe (it is a chain) and they do monthly Bariatric info nights, giving out samples and coupons etc. I use unjury. I have tried Syntax nectar in a few flavors but like the Unjury better for texture and taste.
