  1. My bariatric center has a support group meeting once a month. I have only been to one. I have four close friends and we all had the gastric sleeve surgery about two weeks apart, so we support each other. We check in almost every day and chat about our exercise plans, recipes and food intake for the day. We also do occasional weigh ins. It has been a good support system, but I should probably eventually make my way to the hospital ran meetings.

    What to have at home?

I brought extra small bowls and plates and baby spoons and forks to eat with. That really helped with portion control. Loved using the tiny spoons when I was able to eat yogurt. They helped slow me down. A good scale came in handy when I was able to start purée and solids.
  4. Hang in there it gets easier as time passes. However, learn to listen to your body and if it's tired rest. I took naps every day for the first month, sometimes several naps a day in the beginning. I got my energy back about the end of the fourth week. It just takes time. The increased calories will happen as time passes and your stomach heals. Focus on your protein intake and fluids and time will take care of the rest. Be good to yourself- this is your time!! Good luck

    Two years ago today.....

Congratulations on your accomplishments!! You look amazing and more importantly feeling great. I am sorry about your loss of your brother and friend. I know they would both be proud that you are now able to deal with life's stressors and sorrows without turning to food! We all appreciate you here and value your input.

    Husbands feelings..

I think a strong marriage will just get stronger. I have been married for 24 years and my sweet husband has loved me through big and small. I was 105 pounds when we meet years ago. My highest weight was 271. He was never critical and has always told me how beautiful I am- he may need better glasses!! The things that have changed was not that he was more attracted to me, but that now we have way more fun!!! When I was heavy I didn't want to go and do as much. Outdoors activities never happened. I dreaded walking a lot and overall was just plain lazy from hauling all that weight around on my short 5'3" frame... Fast forward to post op. I now weight 145 and have a zest for life that I have never had before. We have so many new hobbies and are having a blast trying new things. I try to do at least two new things each season. In living outside my comfort zone I have found so many things I love to do; hiking, camping, kayaking, ziplining, paddle boardinging. So my marriage is just plain fun now!!

What to bring day of surgery!?!

I way overpacked, but that's just me. The things I had that made the most difference were: 1.Moisturizing mouthwash (biotene) 2.Travel size pillow- to brace my stomach with while walking and the ride home

Six days pre-op struggling with diet

Does your plan allow for sugar free Popsicles or sugar free jello? I found that if I snacked on the sugar free Popsicles it wasn't as bad. Hang in there- you can do it. It will be so worth the sacrifice you are making now. Good luck to you!!

  15. My thoughts and prayers are with you ,your son and family. Illness is tough, but when it involves one of your children it feels devastating and out of control. Hang in there. I can imagine how hard it must be to try and take care of yourself right now. But like you said- you have to stay strong for your son and rest of your family. One day at a time.

    Holiday Weight Loss Challenge!

145 this week- I think that's the same as last week.
  17. I added a powdered marine collagen and a liquid silica to my water every day and they have made a huge difference for me. I get both from Amazon. My hair is thicker and not as dry and brittle. I had tried many things and this helped me the most.

Any 12hr shift nurses out there?

I am a nurse and work 12 hour night shifts. It was challenging in the beginning to keep hydrated. Since the beginning I always overpack what I think I might eat (so I have a good variety) and I always have a ready to drink protein shake with me at all times. I rarely drink the protein shake, but if I get super busy it's an easy way to get fluids, calories, and protein all in one. I always drink water on my drive into work and on my drive home- that helps with my fluid intake. Also, eat a high protein meal right before getting dressed. Then by the time I was ready to head out I could start drinking. That way I started my day with high protein. Then if my shift starts busy I am not behind on protein and fluids. I think the key is to constantly be diligent and not get to distracted to eat and drink. Sometimes I set timers on my phone. It is definitely doable, just a little more challenging for us!! Good luck.
  19. I live in Florida and I still freeze!! I use a dual controlled heated blanket for my bed, I have a heated throw for the living room and wear lots of layers.

Gallbladder surgery was a piece of cake!

Glad your surgery went fabulous!! You enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow!! Happy Thanksgiving
  21. @@Elode Don't beat yourself up too bad about the cigarettes. You are human, but we all know that you can gain control and not go down that path!! We all do things we probably shouldn't. I did Fireball whiskey shots on Friday night- felt guilty about that; but boy it was good. Sorry to hear you might have to get surgery. I would flip out if my jaw was wired shut. I think my head would explode. I can understand your concern about losing any more weight. That is definitely something to consider. My daughter has the Damon braces and I must say they are fantastic!!! In just six weeks her crossbite was fixed, her front teeth straight. I have never seen such dramatic changes so fast. One of my friends daughter needed a palate expander and she went with the Damon braces and it worked super fast- of course she was 16. Glad you got your sugar free Popsicles!!

    Help!

A feel your pain with the suffering from cold. I have severe cold intolerance too- and I live in Florida. Some things that helped me are: I have an electric blanket on my bed and turn it on high about 45 minutes before I go to bed so it's nice and toasty. That seems to help while I sleep. I also found a heated throw at Target. I keep that on my couch. I wear a tee shirt or tank top underneath everything. Seems like most of us are severely cold. You could have the doctors check your thyroid just to make sure your levels are normal. A low thyroid can cause cold intolerance. Good luck!
  24. I met my husband when I weighed 110 pounds. We have been married for 24 years. I weighed 271 when I had my surgery. God bless him he has loved me unconditionally through all my various weights. He never said a negative word and even at my biggest he told me how beautiful I was. The things that changed in our marriage when I was heavier was our activities. At my heaviest I did not want to do anything that involved something outdoors or physical. My husband always altered our hobbies to accommodate my wishes and limitations (at the time I did not think I had limitations, but in looking back I realize my weight held me down and back). We were boring. A night out involved dinner and a movie. Friends over to the house for dinner, shopping, reading... Fast forward to now with 120+pounds gone and weighing at 144 I feel fantastic. I am living life to the fullest. I feel like this surgery has given me a second chance. My husband is enjoying all our new hobbies I have us doing. I love experiencing new and adventurous things. Hiking, camping, kayaking, ziplining, paddle boarding....He is right by my side doing them with me. So I think our marriage didn't get stronger (it was already close and strong), but our marriage has gotten FUN!!! We have so much fun doing different things!! I get excited looking forward to our next adventure!!
