You hair loss is normal after surgery. It is caused not only by the dramatic shift in your diet, but also due to the shock on your body due to the surgery. It's called Telogen Effluvium. On a normal scalp, about 90% of your hair follicles are producing hair, and 10% are in the resting phase. This is called the anagen phase. In this phase, your hair falls out of the follicles, and then grows back in. When you've experienced a shock to your body, it sends 30 to 40% of your hair follicles in to the resting phase. This state is called telogen. This is temporary, and I know it is scary. It happened to me after my tummy tuck, but not after my bariatric surgery. I took Vita4Life Hair, Skin & Nail after both procedures. I found my hair loss wasn't too bad when I experienced it and I'd estimate I only lost about 15 - 20% of my hair. It grew back just as healthy and I attribute the lack of loss to these Vitamins. I'd recommend trying them. It can't hurt. And please believe me... it'll be okay! I was scared too. It'll grow back I promise!

I take Vita4Life and recommend it personally. You don’t need to take a bunch and it’s been keeping me healthy for years. I tax my body and am a compliant and successful post op patient who has reached goal and maintained for a very long time. I’ve tried everything – trust me. I dislike chewables and think they are garbage mostly. Also, you need not worry about taking their calcium supplement with their multivitamin because the calcium supplement is chelated. Despite what you’re reading on this page, they will not compete if the mineral is protected within its natural organic acid. I hope you find something that works for you! Good luck.

HOW MANY VITAMINS?
calvinspines replied to heartonmysleeve82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It’s better to make it easier on yourself than to stock a pharmacy, try to be perfect and forget to take things. First, I would recommend flax seed oil over fish oil any day of the week if you’re going to take omegas. You can find them in the Vitamin section of organic grocery stores like Sprouts or Whole Foods. Stick to good ones… but remember it’s important to keep your regimen simple if you’re not good at remembering. So, let’s consider those optional for the time being. You NEED a good multivitamin and you NEED to be sure you’re getting in your calcium, Vitamin D and Iron. I’ll tell you what I take, and you can make your own mind up but I’ve had no issues with my labs for 8 years. I take Vita4Life Multi Plus 2 AM 2 PM. Iron, sublingual B12, and Vitamin D (1 each mid day). That’s it. Each container lasts me 3 months so I don’t even have to order often. I hope you find what you’re looking for and good luck! www.vita4Life.net -

Need recommendations for chewable vitamins!
calvinspines replied to losing_the_band's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I honestly can't stand chewables. I have never found one I enjoyed and I think they all taste terrible. I use Vita4Life's Chelated Calcium. I know you asked for chewables, but you also mentioned you weren't fond of the flavor of BA's chewables so I thought I'd offer my advice since I feel your pain on that. Good luck with your search! http://vita4life.net/products/bariatric-vitamins-calcium-malate-chelate-support.html -
Vita4life’s Hair Skin and Nail vitamin formula has 2000mcg biotin and I am sure, this formula can really be supportive to avoid your hair loss problem.

You can also go with the mini multivitamins if you want to.

I have been taking vitamin b 12 sublingual for years. I have never noticed such complications while taking it. I think, you should try vita4life’s products, because I think the cause of the problem might be the supplement you are currently taking.

Help me please! I'm losing my hair
calvinspines replied to jamill527's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Monitor your protein intake and in the meanwhile try taking hair skin and nail supplements. They contain biotin which boosts hair growth and may help you. I take the hair skin and nail supplements from vita4life and they contain 2000 mcg biotin an addition of 650 mg MSM that helps in boosting hair growth along with maintaining healthy skin and nails. -

Do we need a B12 supplement?
calvinspines replied to Jordien's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take vitamin b12 sublingual along with the daily multivitamin. Sublingual are easy to absorb and you don’t have to swallow. -

What vitamins are you taking?
calvinspines replied to emsbugbug's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take one multivitamin, 1200 mcg calcium malate chelate and vitamin b12 sublingual. I hate chewables, they are just yucky. I get all my vitamins from one place, so that’s a relief. Have had my labs done too and they look good. -
Vitamins after surgery
calvinspines replied to mommyjamie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor’s office strongly advised me against chewable as it contains harmful fillers in the form of binding agents known to cause side effects. I take one multivitamin, containing 100% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of at least 2/3 of all nutrients, including 18 mg iron and minerals like zinc and selenium, 1200 mg calcium malate chelate, divided into three doses of about 500 mg each, taken at least two hours apart and 1000mcg B-12 in sublingual. -

VSG basically cuts a large portion of your stomach which results in the loss of intrinsic factor responsible for digestion of vitamin b12 from food sources. Thus after VSG you cannot absorb b12 causing a deficiency. Thus you ideally are advised to take vitamin b12 sublingual that is directly absorbed into the body through the blood stream. Can’t say about the calcium need after VSG though.
