Vitamins at one year
shirleybstephens replied to jeaniek's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take Vita4Life Multi-Plus and I take 4 per day. My surgeon recommended I take Vita4Life products because I simply can’t stand chewables. I've had nothing but great results with them. I take their Chelated Calcium. Multi-standard, and sublingual B-12. I swear by these Vitamins. I was speaking to someone there the other day when I placed my order, and they’re coming out with chewables shortly. I believe she said they estimate 1-2 months. You may want to check them out if you prefer a chewable? -
I take Vita4Life and I’ve always had amazing labs. They make quality supplements and their prices are so good. Not everyone can take a capsule like I do, but I was speaking to someone there the other day when I placed my order, and they’re coming out with chewables shortly. I believe she said they estimate 1-2 months. You may want to check them out if you’re looking for a chewable? As for hair loss, it’s a tough one. Your hair loss is due to telogen effluvium. It is caused when your body has been shocked by trauma, in this case -- surgery. Essentially, up to 30% of your hair goes in to the resting phase, and then falls out. It's temporary and will grow back. I didn't go through it after my surgery thankfully but not everyone does. I took Vita4Life Hair, Skin and Nail formula and their Multi-Standard formula since the second week post-op. I don't know if I can credit no hair loss to that, or to just being one of the lucky ones but I believe the supplements do work. If I were you, I'd space any supplements you take out over taking them all at once. Good luck. I'll link you the supplements so you can take a look at what I've been using. My labs have been spot on for years thanks to these. http://vita4life.net/products/bariatric-vitamins-multi-standard-formula.html http://vita4life.net/products/bariatric-vitamins-hair-skin-and-nail-support.html

B12 shots?
shirleybstephens replied to LoseItKacy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Shots are more effective simply because the vitamins are bypassing the digestive tract all together and being absorbed through the muscle. I have had shots in the past when my Vitamin B-12 strays to the low-normal side, but I try to avoid that by getting my B12 in sublingually. I prefer Vita4Life sublinguals, and I’ve tried many. They are pleasant tasting and the company makes quality supplements. I take their calcium and the multi-standard as well. When I placed my order last week, I was told they’re coming out with a chewable in a month or two! Have you tried a sublingual yet? You can check them out here if you haven’t. The shots are really not bad at all, but like I said, I try to avoid them by just getting my nutrients in orally. Good luck! http://vita4life.net/bariatric-vitamins-b-12-sublingual.html -
Chewable Vitamins
shirleybstephens replied to katiern's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have tried all kinds of chewables and I personally have found them to be awful. I am 8 years post op and very compliant both nutritionally and as far as exercise is concerned (I lift weights and hit goal weight years ago and maintained.) I know everyone seems to suggest chewables are the way to go post op but I think they’re just wrong. I read about people suffering with all kinds of deficiencies on chewables – even the most popular online bariatric ones and all I can do is shake my head and wonder when people will make the connection. I was on them too and I wound up in a mountain of trouble after only 5 months. The one everyone raves about was one of the worst. My Vitamin D dropped in to the danger zone and my ferritin levels to dropped to 41. My Vitamin B-12 was very low and my Vitamin A was toxic. I was a mess. I was also EXTREMELY constipated the entire time I was on them. Uncomfortably, painfully, constipated. It took a few months but got it all sorted out. To top it all off as if it wasn’t bad enough, the chewable Iron stained my teeth and made my stomach so upset every time I took it. My stomach really disliked that overload of iron and my intestines liked it even less. I finally just decided to go with Vita4Life. They offer capsules (I know I know… you’re all thinking it won’t work because GASP it’s a capsule.) Trust me… it goes down just fine. It doesn’t make me sick nor does it hurt in any way going down. It dissolves quickly and my labs have been PERFECT since beginning them. I ask a lot of my body when I go to the gym and work out and these Vitamins have been really good to me. All I can say is that I love these products and they better not go anywhere because I think I’d cry. Lol -
Required Vitamins
shirleybstephens replied to msash06's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I will never understand why so many surgeons are adverse to capsules or tablets post surgery. I suppose it’s because they don’t have the surgery themselves. I’ve been taking Vita4Life since I had my surgery 8 years ago, and I’ve never, ever had to deal with chalky vitamins OR disappointing lab results. We swallow pieces of food larger than these capsules, and they dissolve in under 2 minutes. They’ll send you samples if you really want to try them… I’d give them a shot. I wouldn’t be saying this if I didn’t have personal experience to back it up. I trust them and the results, and if you’re struggling with chalky vitamins (trust me… I would too), then what do you have to lose? J Here’s a link to their product page. That would be my personal suggestion. http://vita4life.net/products.html -
Good vitamin with NO IRON!
shirleybstephens replied to Sreeves's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have the exact same problem, and my surgeon recommend I take Vita4Life multi’s without iron. I’ve been taking them daily for months and I’ve been great so far. I still take iron supplements, but I take them separately from my multi and every other day. It has helped immensely with my constipation issues. You may want to check them out. Here’s the link. Sublingual B12
shirleybstephens replied to roundisashape's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Well, I don’t think that would be a healthy choice, if you are searching for something that tastes good. Candy-like supplements contains artificial colors and flavors that are very bad for health. So I would suggest you to avoid them. -
Gummy multi vitamin after surgery?
shirleybstephens replied to Krystal0528's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can’t do chewable or gummies. Chewable make me throw up and gummies upset my stomach. I take multivitamins d3 in capsules and vitamin b12 sublingual tablet. -

How Many Vitamin Pills Do You Take Daily?
shirleybstephens replied to longer-life's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Patients will need to take the following supplements: • Multivitamin • Vitamin B12 • Calcium Multivitamins: Make sure the vitamin includes folate (at least 400 mcg daily required) and iron. Menstruating women or patients with anemia should take a multivitamin with supplemental iron. Approved Multivitamins: Centrum Performance, Flinstones, Costco vitamins, and various other brands available at stores internationally. Vitamin B12: Patients will need to supplement B12 in their diet, as deficiency is somewhat common and can lead to serious neurological problems. Calcium: Patients will need to take a supplement for calcium/vitamin D complex. This will help prevent osteoporosis. -

I take a 1000 mcg of vitamin b12 sublingual and feel an effective boost in three to four hours after ingestion. Personally I do not prefer shots.
