Good morning all, Would love to connect with any seniors over seventy who are traveling this road. There's probably not a lot of us. For sure, our journeys will differ due to our advanced age. Personally, am not quite two months post-op, but I must say I feel great! Let me know how you're doing, and if there are any issues you need help with. Hope to talk to you soon. Hugs, Jodi

Reaching out to any seniors over seventy
Angelyaya5 replied to Angelyaya5's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey calling all seniors who have had the surgery or are awaiting surgery... I am over 2 yr. post-op and loving life.... I am 73 and am so glad for a surgeon who didn't look at my age. I lost 100 pounds and could lose another 20, but if I never do....no problem... I do find that I need to remind myself to take my vitamins, and I'm terrible about getting enough protein, so am a terrible role model. I am sure about one thing.....best decision I ever made. My PCP wasn't even supportive of me having the surgery. Glad I didn't listen to her.... Would love to hear from anyone needing support of any form....... You're all on the right path..... -
Reaching out to any seniors over seventy
Angelyaya5 replied to Angelyaya5's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi all, I was tracking my protein intake daily, but took a break for a couple weeks. Must get back to putting pen to paper. Most of my protein comes from Greek yogurt, fish, protein bars, soups, shrimp, etc. I cannot stomach the protein shakes, it's just the idea of them. If they tasted as good as a thick shake or a Coolatta, it'd be different. -
@ Just Watch Me, you are doing great! You've broken the 200 mark. Good for you! I'm hoping I am there before I head off to Florida the end of January. I'm 19 pounds away. I will be 2 months post-op on the 16th of this month. I will be happy not to have to use a seatbelt extender too, used to be so embarassed. I used to dread flying because of the seating and used to have anxiety about it. Hugs

@ Inner Surfer Girl, you made me chuckle. I agree with your posting HUGE THANK YOU'S FOR YOUR SERVICE to all the veterans out there including my husband and two daughters.

Glad to hear you're doing well, every day will get better. Just remember to chew, chew, chew, when you eat solid foods. I have had the "dumping syndrome" several times. You'd think I'd learn......nope! It's all good though! Enjoy your time out! Hugs

HI everyone, I too was Diabetic pre-surgery and on Metformin ER, but since my surgery my BS are normal and no meds. So this is such a plus, because i hate taking any meds. My only complaint is my weight loss is going slow due to my age (very old) and a thyroid condition which affects your metabolism, but at least it's going in the right direction. I feel great and it hasn't been two months since the surgery, so I need to stop worrying about the numbers. I value my meetings with my nutritionist monthly, she keeps me encouraged. I also track my food intake daily on a spreadsheet, so I can keep track of carbs, fats, sugar, calories, and Protein Keep up the good work, everyone, it's worth it! Hugs

Hi Sue, Congrats are in order, you made it to through the light! Now your life can only improve! Drink your shakes, take your Vitamins and try to get some Water in. Each day will get better. I'm 9 days post-op and I feel awesome!. Our goal weight is about the same, maybe we can share each other's clothes, lol. They'll be brand new because we'll have to buy all new ones. Remember, purple is my favorite color and anything black, oh yes, and I love glitter. Not gaudy though! Hugs, Jodi

As I write this, I find myself in tears, because it took years of being unhappy with myself, being overweight since delivering my last child who is now thirty- eight. My name is Jodi and I'm almost seventy-one. I am a wife, mother of five, grandmother of eight, and a retired nurse. My PCP was not very encouraging re this surgery, so I wasted years putting it on a back burner, being depressed, and hating my self image. The scale was the enemy. Hated shopping for clothes, and even though people said I didn't look my age, nothing helped. This post is not meant to be a pity party, just me baring my soul. As an overweight woman, I felt invisible to the opposite sex, when in mixed company. Severe bouts of depression would overtake me. I used to say, it's good these didn't happen when I was raising my children, or in nursing school. Then my husband's cousin had by-pass surgery last December 27th and that got me to thinking. I went to an informational seminar in February, and the rest you can say is history. Jumped through all the hoops and came up smelling like a Rose! Lol Anyway, just had the surgery September16th and each day I feel better. Not bad for an old bird! Truly that was the only question I had, was I too old and would insurance pay? I am happy to report I am no longer taking diabetic meds, yesterday my blood sugar reading was 87. I hope to meet lots of new friends to share my journey with. I have my first post-op appointment on my birthday, October 2cd. I will then find out what pre-surgery weight was and where I'm at now. You see, I used to stand on the scale backwards so as not to see the numbers, because I knew it would trigger my depression. Hopefully those days are behind me and my once enemy will become my best friend. I have two more days after today on this total liquid diet, then on to soft foods ie cottage cheese. Oh BTW did I tell you I'm going to kill my hubby and bury his body......somewhere. You see last night he put together a huge crockpot of meatballs, sausage, and peppers and left it simmering all night. I'd smell it, then take another sip of my protein shake! Think I'll kill him! Lol Anyway, hope to make lots of new friends of any age or sex, so we can lift each other up, as we travel on our journey. Hugs to all, Jodi. I may be old, but I can still be an inspiration

Angelyaya5 replied to angelicHG7's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@ Alorale, you're doing awesome, you must be proud of yourself! Congrats @mightyschratt............... Good for you, remember, our weight isn't going to come off as fast as the younger generation, but that's OK, cause not only are we getting older, we're getting better Hugs, Jodi -
Hi Clara, You're gonna rock this! Have a support system in place for when you come home, take your Vitamins as instructed and get your 45-60g of Protein in daily. Keep us posted and good luck and God Bless Jodi

Am I selfish for wanting bypass?
Angelyaya5 replied to mamamia86's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey Mia, No need to explain, you just want a better quality of life, nothing wrong with that. If the 86 in your name is your birth year I could be your grandmother. LOL Have a great day! -
Am I selfish for wanting bypass?
Angelyaya5 replied to mamamia86's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi Mia, I don't see where selfishness comes into this. You want to feel and look better, and you know that having the surgery will do both these things. I am much much older than you and I am 1 week out post-op from the by-pass surgery. No problems encountered and I had diabetes 2 and high blood pressure. My diabetes is gone, no meds needed and I suspect as I lose the weight my meds may decrease in strength or disappear. No matter what, I intend to follow the program, and look forward to buying new clothes and become a diva! -
Please tell me this stall will pass ( I know it will, but I need some good vibes!)
Angelyaya5 replied to MissAriadne's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My advice, stay away from the scale for a few days, follow your program and then weigh yourself maybe on Monday. I'll bet you'll see a surprise. Good luck -
@@willstride and others having surgery..... you're gonna rock this..... it's normal to be nervous, but look how far you've come already just to get to this day!!! You're gonna do great, and every day will be better than the one before! I am a week post-op and every day I feel a little stronger and better. Will be awaiting news from you after your surgery. Good luck and God bless Will say general prayers for all who are at this point. Hugs, Jodi

I am scheduled to have gastric bypass on 10/7/14
Angelyaya5 replied to kelli_kelli_kelli's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Kelli You won't go back to your old ways, because you jumped through too many hoops to get to this point......just speaking my thoughts. Your choices will be different after surgery. I have a six week post-op menu plan and I'm just starting week two tomorrow. Your appetite isn't there. It does come back down the road, but hopefully by then you'll have reached goal weight and no way are you going to jeopardize it! Hugs Jodi -

Angelyaya5 replied to kelli_kelli_kelli's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi Kelli, My greatest advice which I learned the hard way, was don't compare your journey to anyone else"s. Your're entering a wonderful time in your life, which will bring about great positive changes, how exciting. What you can tolerate once you get through the liquid phase will be different from others. Some can't tolerate scrambled eggs, go figure. We're all different. It's trial and error what is going to work for you. I will certainly find out tomorrow when I start my second week menu. I love cottage cheese, so am looking forward to it, but who know, maybe I won't be able to tolerate it yet, and I'll be disappointed. I do agree with Ginger Snaps i.e. getting rid of your old clothes after surgery. I am in the process as we speak, of doing just that! Goodwill, here come all my 1x and 2x stuff, as soon as this season ends. Good luck, Kelli;I know you're gonna do great! This is a great resource, but again, don't compare yourself with anyone else! -
I also take chewables, but surgeon changed me to Bariatric Fusion, has everything you need, but we as individuals, may need a tweak here and there i.e. extra Vitamin D, B, or in my case Biotin. Chewables were an asset because I'm still in the liquid phase, so taking them was like a dessert to me.LOL

Good morning all, I just had my surgery the 16th, and am still in the shake phase, but today when I got dressed I was hoping for my clothes to feel a little looser. They fit the same. Sorry if I'm whining, but I don't think I've lost any weight, how can that be? Since I suffer severely from depression, I don't know what my starting weight was, or what pre-surgery weight was. My first appointment is on my birthday, October second. I am on the verge of tears my peeps. Some words of kindness would be greatly appreciated from this who have traveled this road. I know there are so many larger more important issues going on in the world, but just had to vent and I apologize for being needy. Thank you all for listening to this old lady.

Thank you all for the kind and encouraging words. I've decided not to step back onto the scale until next week. Had a minor setback, completely my fault. Entered my darkened bedroom and tripped over my dog (Boxer), and landed right on my stomach. Just a tad sore today. Hopefully there'll not be any repeat performances.

How are you doing, so far? The best days are now ahead of you. We nurses are the worst patients, but take your pain med when you feel you need it. Had my surgery the 16th, and am counting the days until I can have soft foods ie cottage cheese and scrambled eggs. I must say this week of shakes is killing me. Being retired, the fridge seems to chase me around the house.LOL Each day gets better. Good luck on your journey to a new you!

Hi Lucy, How are you doing? I too had my surgery the same day.Was in overnight and so far so good. Are you getting your shakes in ok? I'm counting the days until I can have scrambled eggs and cottage cheese. Tonight I had the suggested broth, it was ok, now I even look at my chewable vitamins like food. Two more days of shakes left, and I must admit it's been hard. Talk soon, and congratulations.

My very long story...August 1st surgery!
Angelyaya5 replied to Beckyyb93's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Becky, I sincerely hope that the by-pass is your miracle. I must say you remind me of my granddaughter who is 22 and lives in Florida. She's a beautiful girl, so smart, but discriminated against because of her weight. Wish I could convince her to have this surgery. I am five days post- op myself and almost seventy-one. I am also a retired nurse, so you've chosen a great profession. What an example you'll be to your future patients. Will be keeping fingers crossed for your success, which I know you'll achieve. Huge hugs -
