13 Nutrition Lies That Made The World Sick And Fat
MsUjima posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I discussed this with my nutritionist - they admitted that the low fat diet they recommend is not necessarily consistent with the most current research - but that they (nutritionist) have a hard time going against conventional norm. http://www.businessinsider.com/13-nutrition-lies-that-made-the-world-sick-and-fat-2013-10?op=1 -

I get plenty of Protein. I drink a Protein shake every morning made up of unflavored Isopure 2 scoops (52 grams) and pure protein (35 grams). Then I eat regularly doing the day. -
I drink a protein shake for breakfat. I use two scoops of unflavored Isopure power (52 grams) and 1 can of pure protein (35 grams) with stevia sweetner and ice. I then eat whatever protein I feel like during the day without worrying about my protein intake.

I regularly experience plateaus any where from a couple of weeks to a month long. I start taking body measurements once a month which shows that even when I seem to stall I have lost body fat in inches. Here is a copy of my past 180 days weight loss Which shows the frequency and length of some of plateau. Once I recognized it as a pattern - I stopped worrying about it. Just stay on the program and trust the process. -
I am taking general multi-vitamin; calcium, d-3(?) and B12.

Hot Flashes and Nausea
MsUjima replied to leanora27801's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have severe hot flashes. that started in the last month. Some of it is "dumping" and I think the culprit is "fatty foods". Unfortunately, doesn't seem to take much, I cooked greens with neckbones and bacon for flavoring. I ate the greens and neckbones and had a hot flash. But I also get them throughout the day unrelated to eating. I check my blood sugar and it is not hypoglycemic. anyone have a suggestion I would be happy to hear them. -
I have watched all three seasons. From what I can tell only two out of 30 had little weight loss. Both became immediately resistant to following the diet. I looked up Penny (the one who lost only five lbs) had a "weight fetish" she had been on several shows claiming she was trying to lose weight: Dr. Phil, a british show. She got her self labeled as the heaviest woman in the world (in Guniness) and she claimed that she had lost weight by having sex 4 or times a day. I came away thinking that she didn't want to lose weight she just wanted to be on TV. I like the show because generally the people are quite successful -- but not without a struggle. What I don't like about it is it is overly scripted. The people always seems as if they are reading to me and also I would like to seem them followed for more than a year. because many don't have the surgery until the 3rd or 4th month which means that we only see a few months of surgical weight loss.

There is also evidence of higher incidence of alcoholism post surgery. Some of that may be due addiction transfer (food to alcohol) but some is also due to different methablising alcohol . QUOTE: "Among RYGB patients, there was a significant decrease in alcohol consumption in the first year after surgery, compared to the year before surgery, but not in the second year. Thus, the increase in alcohol use disorder symptoms following RYGB surgery was likely a result of an increase in alcohol sensitivity following surgery combined with resumption of higher levels of alcohol consumption in the second post-operative year ... This is concerning, given the negative impact heavy drinking may have on Vitamin and mineral status, liver function and weight loss." See, http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/246775.php

I am 10 weeks post-surgery. Been on solid foods for about 2 weeks. I had everything but the crust last week it went well. My concern is whether the crust would cause dumping syndrome and also making sure I keep my carb intake low to maximize weight lost.

To Big Men: How to get enough calories?
MsUjima posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My son had the surgery almost a month ago. He is a big man 6'6' /500 lbs and he is very active. He hasn't been feeling well and he thinks it is because he is not getting enough calories. Any suggestions? -

Yes, he is getting over 120 grams of protein. His issue is getting enough calories -
Personally I would only have bacon/cheese quiche and sausage

Can I stop crushing my pills yet?
MsUjima replied to willyumyum's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am about 8 weeks out as well. I never crushed my medicine and I have quite a few. Instead, I spaced the taking of the medicine over 20 minutes. I have no problems. -
I chose the bypass because greater weight lost potential. more likely to cure for diabetes and GErD.
-
I use all one senior powder.

Irina, I have the same story. I am a single parent of two boys. My oldest son started the journey before me and called said he thought I should look into it because of the health benefits (diabetes/Hypertension). I looked into it and agreed. Because of different insurance and doctors I ended up having my surgery first (Sept 18). My son had his surgery on Oct 18. We both have been doing great AND it has given us a specific project to work together on. I Have lost 43 lbs and he has lost 63 (ugh - men). My exercise level is up - I am no longer taking diabetic medication and my hypertension medicine has been cut in half - I am a happy camper. Best wishes to you and your son. I hope we stay in touch

I was on a generic which wasn't helping and my doctor switched me to nexium. You might want to ask your doctor for a prescription.

It was my understanding that dumping syndrome would be a life long problem not merely a post surgery issue.

My doctor said that I should be on a low carb diet. So on the diet recommended by my doctor straight apple juice or any klnd of juice would not be allowed unless it was seriously diluted.
