Abuse of wls..when it's not needed
tomi71 replied to Momma_D's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Look at it as a question of curiosity. Nothing anyone said on this board stopped anyone from getting the needed help. Its just food for thought. No need to judge but yet ask not to be judged. I think this dialogue was really interesting and insightful. -
Abuse of wls..when it's not needed
tomi71 replied to Momma_D's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Same exact thing on my end. But everyone is different. The sad thing is if the docs (the people behind the science of this procedure) are agreeing that a lower weight person with co-morbidities can be a good candidate for the surgery but the insurers won't cover, there creates even more problems because the patients' are not being afforded optimal care. But I really meant people who are clearly not a candidate (like my anorexic friend). There are those out there and there are unscrupulous doctors our there too. Conrad Murray, anyone? The conversation reminds me of TI's wife, Tiny. Tiny, I believe, went on a medical vacation to either South America or Europe(?) because she wanted here eye color changed. From news I saw I don't believe she had any underlying medical eye problems. So she found a doctor overseas and had her brown eyes changed to blue. Only because she wanted blue eyes. I bet there's a ton of judgement heaped at her but who knows what she was going through that blue eyes wouldn't fix....emotional issues? Maybe she got teased about brown eyes? Maybe there are blue-eyes in her family? There are blue-eyed folks in mine! But I was one who judged her, btw, and after reading the market for said procedure and how the procedure is done and what protocols are in place to ensure patient is a prime candidate, I felt like she allowed herself this very dangerous procedure despite not have a clear medical need. I think folks felt that they were being attacked and I don't think OP had a troll-like agenda as it seems many took it as. -
"Change Your Relationship With Food" ..but how!?!
tomi71 replied to MrsMurky721's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I guess the saying the more you give into a craving the more you crave and it becomes a vicious roundabout. I've found that to be my problem. Like you, too, the more healthier, the more satisfying and my spidey senses don't tingle and bedevil me so much anymore when "no no" goods are arounds. @Blerdirgl you and my husband think alike in that food dept. He loves salads, all kinds of veg, and fruits. He tries to desecrate my veggie gardens! Lol He will choose these food over almost any junk except chips...chips are his kryptonite. His usual habits is to reach for Protein, vegetable carbs, assorted whole fruits, skim dairy and then the treats as last course if at all because he really doesn't eat dessert. And he doesn't have a weight problem; never had as he is athletic and gets PT in with his army unit and has to spend time doing some serious training while I worry myself to death. ???? I still cant get down with traditional lettuces salad. I like braised whole veg seasoned with misses dash and tossed with a tiny but of grape-seed oil and roast garlic and homemade parmesan chips. I'll even eat grilled endive with no problems. I am dying to try a lettuce taco again like what I ate when living in SO CAL but even there if the meat wasn't juicy and hot enough to soften the lettuce, I couldn't do it. ???? ****Edited because I was walking while texting and saw how poorly some sentence were written! Still Bad! But better. Lol -
Lying about what type of surgery..
tomi71 replied to Bubsen's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thats a good point! Didn't even think about that. On the safe side...hernia surgery is a better reason as it is similar to other abdominal surgeries but can be a recurring issue & therefore can be used again as a reason for future procedures. This, only if you feel you have to give details. When I had my hysterectomy I told my boss the details because a) boss is female, genuinely a good person and great leader/co-worker & c) boss lady, has an older-sister type air to her, gave me good support, tips, and advice since she had been through the same issues I went through. Cant get a better boss-lady than that! Love her! Just a great, caring, & understanding person and a down to earth with no time forbull$!tt, great friend. I've lucked out at work in that dept.LOL BUT if you want to play safe, don't explain yourself. All you have to tell HR or its those who have HR duties that you need to have a medical procedure done and here's how it will effect my job. Let them figure out the rest. Maybe by watching you start changing to a healthier mind and body, you might start a fitness gang? I am going to try this after the new year. Best wishes. And congrats to you!i am so happy for you! And for everyone! -
You know? I like that saying. Its very encouraging to me. I was always stuck in the, "I have to be perfect" mode and ended up self-loathing. That saying says to just keep on going! Sometimes we all need to hear it! I know I do!

I recall my NUT telling me once that going under 1000 can and will eventually stall me. Not sure if she was referring specifically to "me" or if she meant in general........My therapist reminds me that I didn't get to where I was overnight, so don't expect to get to where I am going, overnight. I think the fact that you are mindful about it means you are still on the right path but let patience guide you too. That's been my struggle...I was born lacking both patience & empathy (so I've been told) and those are two qualities I am working hard to cultivate. Knowing this about myself I read as much as I could about stalls so I could be mentally prepped for them when they happen and not revert to my old habit of complete and utter breakdowns! LOL@my crazy "old" self. Forgive me if you've already answered this question but do you use a nutrition tracker? That helps. My NUT also said change up my foods and exercises too because that can help to break a stall. I still do protein first but I continue adding different, healthy kinds of proteins. Some weeks I do no cardio, just weights, but I still work to get in at least 8,000 steps a day...... I am just about right where you are in height and weight and since I hit onederland I've found my weight hovering around 197-195 for the past two weeks. Its frustrating......but surgeon told me that will happen. Keep on trucking and before you know it you'll be looking back at this current stall and laughing because you left it in the dust and will be even closer to goal!

Thank you. If apples insist in giving me trouble then I'll stick with applesauce, which I can handle. Such is life! LOL I have to giggle at myself because never did I think I'd complain that I can't eat a piece of fruit! ????

Abuse of wls..when it's not needed

You don't owe an apology. You bring up some valid issues. You aren't responsible for how someone feels. We've all been judged and we ALL judge still whether purposely or not. There's a purpose of the devil's advocate, the "10th Man", etc. Nobody likes it but its still a necessity. I understood where you were coming from.I am and will always be happy for anyone who gets healthy in a way that works for them because at the end if the day its your health, not dress-size, that matters Happy New Year everyone. -
I swear by my Fitbit. It helps me stay in track. Word of caution, don't do like I did and wear the band too tight. In trying to get used to this smaller body, I wore the band too tight and got a rash and I swear that thing bit me...as I had a small red bump on my wrist right where the actual chip sits. It hurt and itched. I ended up putting my cortisone cream on it and it looked and felt much better after a day. I do have sensitive skin so I should've known better. I am crocheting an all cotton replacement band so that air can circulate thereby reducing rashes, etc.

I am sorry you lost a family member but I am happy for you guys newest family addition! Congrats! ????????

I got some Chanel No. 5 from the hubby and since I LOVE, live, breath haute couture I was ecstatic! This sounds corny but my favorite gift was just having my son over, daughter home from college, hubby not deployed, bro-in-law over, and puppy dog all together under one roof. ☺️???????? Add to this the fact that my folks are still here, healthy, fit and living life and that I have the folks here at Bariatricpal & I can say I've had a wonderful Xmas. Of course, Chanel helped too, Lol! ???? My other favorite gift was waking up knowing I didn't have to exhaustively fight off the holiday food monsters! Sure, we have a ton of holiday food in the house but I feel as strong and as Zen as my man Bruce Lee! LOL Happy holidays to you all. Here's to keeping the spirit year-round.

Abuse of wls..when it's not needed
tomi71 replied to Momma_D's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Very similar to what went through my head when I read original post. It posits that there could be folks that would have the surgery but might not be a good candidate and that there are doctors who would do the surgery despite the patient not being a good candidate. There are so many factors to consider in WLS other than 50lbs or 250lbs of excess weight. As I understand it (& I could be wrong as I am not a medical professional) one of the biggest and most important factors in deciding if someone is a good candidate is their state of mind. I have a friend, an RN, 60lbs over. Considered WLS but ultimately decided against it because she is (in her words) ONLY 60lbs over. She said her dr thinks she could be a good candidate but giving her history of NOT having a life-long struggle with weight acquiesces to her decision that WLS isn't for her (again, going by only what she's told me.) She's already begun to reduce; last month she told me was down 6lbs because she gave up sodas. Conversely, I had a close friend (sadly deceased) who had anorexia. She would've given her kidney to have WLS and believe you me had she had the $ she would've found someone to do it. Where'd she get the idea? From pro-anorexic websites....which is what I had in mind in my earlier post. So is it possible that there are folks who may need to lose weight and use WLS to assist in weight loss although they wouldn't be considered a good candidate? Of course. Are there folks out there who would do it to further their weight loss despite clearly not being overweight? YES! Just like there are people with a relatively (THINK ABOUT WHAT the word RELATIVE MEANS in this context) smaller amount to lose whose life would be saved by WLS and they're an excellent candidate but sadly can't get approval. I do know that medical professionals employ a theory of trying conservative routes to some issues before using surgery because of risks, costs, etc., associated with surgery. Look, WLS is a serious procedure and requires life long changes. As is any surgery. I am glad everyone has gotten the help they needed! Here's to a healthy mind, body, and soul for 2015 for everyone! ???? -
"Change Your Relationship With Food" ..but how!?!
tomi71 replied to MrsMurky721's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I remember first and foremost that I am human, that it is in my power to control what goes into my mouth, and that if it happens to be a cookie then so be it. I refuse to beat myself up over food anymore. But...I also keep in mind that 1 cookie isn't going to kill me but 10 cookies will certainly derail my goals and will cause some serious stomach pain & can turn into a bad habit again I plan everything I eat so since we are in the holiday season I've allowed for a few "treats" here and there. If I find I don't want it after I've gotten in all my necessary nutrition, then great! If I still want it, I do this: breath in the aroma of the treat, take it in (sight) then take small bites and savor every flavor. I find that pretty much satisfies me. I limit the treat to one small cookie or a 1/4 cup of dessert or a max of 2 oz of the item. This is about 1-2 times weekly. CBT takes some time to rewire your brain so I acknowledge that I am still fragile & human above all else. I also refuse to be "that person" who poo-poos someone for eating something that lacks nutrition. To me nothings worse than that. -
Everyone is giving me hope! I am going to try again but eat a smaller amount. I LOVE apples, esp. Galas.

Resleeve after 8 years and 6 months

Thats similar to what I was told....that it will stretch but not to its old size. I think they said it could go up to 8-12 oz of food. -
How soon Post-Op can I take Motrin or Excedrin?
tomi71 replied to ChronicJam's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I currently take Mobic for a bad knee injury. Docs are ok with it because its a short time and I know to take it later in the day after I've eaten, and so on. Each doc is different. I would check before taking any NSAID. -
Ah, the hysterectomy! Fun times...NOT! I lucked out and got to keep an ovary so I wouldn't go into early menopause but I think I am definitely pre-menopausal now. I gained about 40 after the surgery. But I don't miss that thing. Not even a little.

About 5.5 mos out and I too out at 950-1000 max. Once in a while I can go a little higher---when there's a full moon and my cycle is coming. Lol! I am small in height, just kissing 5'3". Currently 195. Down from 265. Goal is 125.....so this current amount is about all I can handle. Remember, everyone is different so this is all relative. Do what works for you & move your body as much as you can. Best wishes!

How Do You Change Your Exercise Routine in Winter?
tomi71 replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Elliptical, Dailyburn, kick-boxing in winter cold ( I HATE winter weather, lol.) Spring & Summer is when I come to life....outside all day. I walk, swim, and do significant gardening. Same for Fall until Jack Frost shows up. -
I would defiantly cease taking them right away especially since they're an old script. Sorry you are in pain. Feel better. ????

I haven't done anything right
tomi71 replied to ELI.p.m's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Please be careful. If you are eating this way you could end up damaging your wound and with other issues and thats when real pain begins. You need to seek food counseling. Even if everyone in your house ate cake morning, noon and night, the power is in your court to decide what goes in your mouth not theirs. They cannot sabotage you if you don't let them. Start at least by planning. Make sure the next thing you eat or drink is in line with what your NUT and/or physician advised. I am 5 1/2 months out and still have trouble with many foods so I can only imagine what you are doing to your sleeve. Good luck to you. Tell those saboteurs to back up out your way. -
Feel better! Does the prescribing doc know you are scheduled for surgery Monday?

Mmmmmmm garlic green beans sound reallllly good right now. ????????
-
No. I think it depends on one's comfort level. I probably waited too long and I might need ti be more patient with introducing raw veggies. In talking to other sleevers, some have experienced similar issues and won't eat raw anything.
