I tried to do the Buffy pigtails, but could never pull it off. Funny to think this was a Buffy that was pre Vampire Slayer era. My dog is named Buffy. ????

    SHOTS

I heard of that too, but I won't be required to do that myself. I know I will be given blood thinner shots in the stomach while in hospital by the nurses. They're given to prevent blood clots, which can be life threatening.

    Too new

Wow, are you saying you have a possible five year wait from now? If so, I'm so sorry, but in any event you hang in there and stay positive. Your time will come, and in the meantime hang around and learn all you can. There are a lot of caring people here, ready and willing to offer support! Welcome!

Share you good reads for success

I'm a big audible book listener and when I first started out, I was scouring the land for first hand accounts of weight loss surgery. But really the only one I could find that focused strictly on wls from a patient's perspective was called: Stranger Here: How Weight Loss Surgery Transformed My Body and Messed With My Head, by Jen Larsen. It's a strange book about a woman who had the duodenal switch in 2006. Some of it I could relate to, but a lot I couldn't. For one, she just sort of stumbled into deciding to have weight loss surgery, and made absolutely no dedicated attempt to prepare herself going in. What surprised me most was how easily she was able to obtain approval, even after blithely gaining weight throughout the entire process. That she experienced an overwhelming emotional crisis afterwards was all but a foregone conclusion. It definitely wasn't what I expected, but I was hungry for something other than the dry clinical "how to" instruction manuals, so I found myself listening to it again and again this past year. She gets a lot right, and even more wrong. So in many ways, for me at least, it served as a cautionary tale.

    Less Sleep, More Hunger?

If there is one thing I can be thankful for it's that I've never been a nighttime eater. I'm in bed usually by 8pm and up by 3am, so I get a pretty good nights sleep. It's just my natural rhythm. I can't imagine how much bigger I would be if I was a night owl. Because right now, as a pre op if I'm awake, I'm pretty much always hungry.

    My worst fear

I think those sort of fears are healthy, and will serve you well in the long run. You know how your life was before. You realize going back is not an option. That's good. Just don't let your goals and dreams turn into obsessions. You can't compare your progress to others. It will absolutely drive you insane. Your journey is unique, as is everyone's. There's no set timeframe or expiration date. Just keep on the right track and you will get there. Good luck!

    Sugar Addiction

Sugar is a big addiction for me. A smart part of the reason I chose RNY is the hope that fear of dumping will help keep me in line. As a post op, (surgery on 07/29), I plan to adopt a pretty strict no sugar diet. I know it's going to be a tough road. I have absolutely no illusions that the cravings won't still be there. But I am ready, willing, and going in with the proper mindset that my lifestyle has to change dramatically in order to lose and maintain the weight loss long term.
