Surgery date set- Instantly terrified!
Bryan Graeve replied to NicoleSW's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
First of all, congrats on your upcoming date. So yeah, I was more excited at first.. more like 'well its about time' because I was getting impatient with the exhaustive pre-op checklist. But the morning of surgery, as I was being wheeled into pre-op, that's when it hit me. I was like 'what in the hell am I doing here!' and 'I'm not sick, do I really need this?'. A moment later, the anesthesiologist came in to give me my "cocktail", and the next thing I knew I was waking up in post-op! Best gift I've ever given myself. Good luck to you! -
Dining out with coworkers?
Bryan Graeve replied to Bryan Graeve's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
That's a great point. I should start ordering things from the beginning of the menu such as lighter plates, appetizers, and Soups. Less wasteful too. -
Dining out with coworkers?
Bryan Graeve replied to Bryan Graeve's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hey boss! You're absolutely right. In the past, I think my weight became a derailment to my career. Being unhappy and unhealthy I think made it difficult to show my managers that I could become a leader in their company. Definitely wasn't wooing any ladies like that! But all this is and shall continue to improve. I'm very excited. I shall conquer! -
Eating at night...
Bryan Graeve replied to Marathongirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I try to keep to three meals a day. I don't get hungry at night, but occasionally my sweet tooth will kick in. I've satisfied it with a couple of oreos so far, probably not the best idea -
Dining out with coworkers?
Bryan Graeve replied to Bryan Graeve's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Thanks gingersnap... "it's all I want" response is some good advice. I've overused the "I'm not hungry" excuse, that hasn't been working for me. I can relate to the Water. I am just not ready to tell coworkers and clients about my WLS. As a consultant, my workplace is competitive and image is essential to influencing my peers and to my success. Losing all this weight, and the self-confidence that comes with it, is certainly boosting my career. I'm just not certain what their reaction would be if they found out "how" I was losing, so I'm trying to avoid any potential critics I guess. -
Learning How to Eat Slowly After Weight Loss Surgery
Bryan Graeve replied to BaileyBariatrics's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Great article. I was educated on this during my pre-op visit with my dietician, but didn't sink in all the way. So, after a few weeks postop when I could re-introduce soft foods again, I ate my food like I always had before. That did not work out well! I would get bad gas pains, even threw up a couple of times. After a few bad meals, the light finally came on.. I was eating way too fast. Bottom line, listen to your dietician and train yourself how to eat with your new stomach! -
Almost cancelled my RNY as I had set in bed preop, IV started & very hungry.

How many oz could yall eat 2 1/2wks post op?
Bryan Graeve replied to 3sprintcar's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
At 7 WLS postoperative I got sick a couple times after a few ozs, usually start throwing up. Ate too fast. So I'm careful. I believe it's possible to eat double what my surgeon said I can handle. But why should I? I feel full after a few ozs. Mind over stomach! -
I've had no issues with meat, had bbq pork last night, but I follow my NUT advice and chew on it for at least 30-45 secs. I'll tKe about 5-7 small bites (a few ozs) and stop so I don't overdo.

A weird feeling arose....

Amy is right, gas builds up really quick in your small pouch. Gas-X will help, or take a walk. Moving around helps. -

Anyone in Hampton Roads VA?
Bryan Graeve replied to dacarter's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Deanna, I'm here every week for business, weekdays only, near Norfolk airport. I'm 6 weeks postop with RNY. Let me know if you'd like to have a chat! -
Scared to death....
Bryan Graeve replied to mindylouho's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
It's good your nervous. It's a major surgery that you are choosing to have done, and it comes with some risk of having complications. You need to think things over carefully. Also, the chance to cure/reverse some/all of my health issues: sleep apnea, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, pre-diabetes. I decided RNY was the right option for me in the long run. I am now 6 weeks post-op and am down 47 pounds. I had no complications from the surgery. I'm just about to start solid foods again, and was cleared of the lifting restrictions. So you can say I'm 100% satisfied by my decision. -
Same here. The night after surgery I said to myself, "What the !$^$ did I just do?" The next morning, and since then, I've been fine.

Rosie O’Donnell Makes Hurtful Comments About the Lap-Band on “The View”
Bryan Graeve replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
We should note we are discussing that a liberal mouth (i.e. Rosie, The View) criticizing a republican presedential candidate. What were we expecting? Perhaps we should get Rush Limbaugh to speak up on how Rosie sucks and lap bands are cool. -
Rosie O’Donnell Makes Hurtful Comments About the Lap-Band on “The View”
Bryan Graeve replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
My surgeon said the same thing. He does not recommend lap bands to any of his patients because of the higher LT failure rates. -

Sleeve Vs Bypass... How did you decide?
Bryan Graeve replied to MrsB2007's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I went with RNY gastric bypass because of several reasons. First, weight loss is quicker the first year. Second, studies show fewer complications with bypass. Third, bypass is more common and considered the gold standard. Many band patients end up transitioning to bypass later. The other hand, bypass patients are on Vitamins the rest of their lives. And I often hear the new stomach pouch can stretch over time if you don't stick with your diet. Happy choosing! -

Hi I'm 22 waiting to hear from the insurance should be getting it in September or October
Bryan Graeve replied to kari1992's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Good luck Kari. The surgery is the easy part, you won't be conscious!???? Post op is a breeze for many of us, as long as the Dr did his job right and you're healthy beforehand the odds are in your favor. Now, the challenge will be afterwards learning what you'll eat and getting to know your new stomach. Just listen and follow your Dr and Nut. Within a year you'll be the new skinny gal on the block. Good luck on your journey! -
Help ..how many calorie am i suppose to be eating?
Bryan Graeve replied to fran2014's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Try the MyFitnessPal app. Input your current and target weight and target date and it will give you an idea of how many calories per day. You can use the app to track what you've eaten too so you stay on target. -
Weight Loss Surgery: The Easy Way Out?
Bryan Graeve replied to Elizabeth Anderson RD's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
I don't think we truly understand why some people are more prone to obesity than others. I believe its more than lack of exercise and overeating. I think there are multiple factors involved: psychological, genetic, hormonal, environmental, etc. I've known people who live unhealthy, outrageous diets of bacon, steak, and such but they live thin, healthy lives past 100! Speaking for myself, obsesity has been a long and difficult journey for me. Bariatric surgery was the "silver bullet" to help me achieve a healthy lifestyle. If anyone has a problem with that, they can stuff it! -
ROFL. That's a new one!

Does anyone have a problem with beef?
Bryan Graeve replied to pik's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Like Cupcake, I've switched to turkey burgers and chicken breasts. I tried a hamburger patty a couple of weeks ago and it came back up. No problem with pork yet. -
since day 2 post-op I've been taking flintstones chewables along with Vitamins D3 and B-12. The B-12 you let dissolve on your tongue.
