    Eating at night

I think the whole "night eating is bad for you" is a myth. I've always had a problem eating at night. It is only a problem IF you are going over your calorie limit or eating the wrong kind of foods. I eat around midnight 5-7 days a week. Its usually dense meat like fish or turkey sticks. Sometimes I'll eat cucumbers with vinegar if I'm near my limit for the day. I lost 100 pounds in 5 months after surgery. Fortunately, I don't think the night eating hindered my weight loss what so ever. Now, eating starchy, carbohydrate rich food right before bed or the middle of the night is a no-no. That's how I got so big in the first place. That's not to say I don't crave a piece of cake or pie in the middle of the night. I just don't make it available in my house.
  2. Same here. I've thought about getting a choppy shag, but am rethinking it since summer is coming up. It's just so easy to twist or pull all my hair back in the summer. So, the choppy shag might be something I do at the end of the summer. As for a short hair, like a pixie cut, it is something I would NEVER do again. The growing out stage is horrific and takes a lot of time styling everyday. I am six months out and didn't want to cut my hair in fear of having some fall out. I didn't want short and thinning hair. Luckily, I haven't noticed any clumps falling out. Since I have long, thick, course, and wavy hair, it is normal for me to lose a lot of hair in the shower. I have noticed that I am doing more styling with my hair since surgery. Before, I was a wash and wear kind of girl. At least now I feel an effort and desire to do some styling with it before I head out the door.

    Calorie intake

I was getting in 500-600 calories everyday for the first 6 months. Right around my 6 month mark, I increased my calories to 850. I lost 5 pounds in the first four days of the increase. It was incredible. I am now doing 2-3 days a week at 850 and 500-600 the rest of the week. It seems so prevent stalling, for me at least.

Dr. says 40 is too young...help

I think this notion of being to young at 40 years old is ridiculous. I am 38 years old and had my surgery at 37. The idea and opportunity of surgery was there in my early 30's, but I waited because my doctor thought I was young enough to do some effective dieting. The waiting did nothing but gave me more years of feeling miserable. I wasted my ealy-mid 30's being morbidly obese. I know, some people can have high self esteem while being huge. I wasn't one of them. I became a recluse and his from the world in every way possible. In the end, I think I wasted many years of my life by not doing it earlier. Years when I should have been in my prime are lost. This is clear to me now since I've had surgery and lost over 115 pounds. I've made so many changes in my health and outlook on life. However, I'm trying to look forward instead of spending time regretting the past. Don't listen to this doctor, its your life and your choice.

Slimes for 5 hours? What the ?!?!

Sorry, I accidentally hit reply before I was finished. I was trying to say that I am afraid to eat today.

Slimes for 5 hours? What the ?!?!

I need some insight into what may have caused my sliming and vomiting for an agonizing 5 hours last night. First off, I am 6 months post op and have never experienced anything close to this before. I had some sliming/vomiting after eating fresh kale a few months back, but it was brief and mild. I started the day yesterday with a Protein shake and three ounces of tuna at lunch. It may be helpful to mention that I had a terribly stressful day at work. Due to an extreme shortage in teachers, I had to take over some classes at the inner city high school. Some of the classes had over 50 students (band/chorus) and there were no lesson plans left. Plus, the computer/DVD player did not work. Add to that the fact that I have never worked with high school students before. It never occurred to me that students would actually try to escape class once my back was turned or make up a song about my ass. Once I got home, I was overly tired and stressed. Not only was I hungry (it was 6 hours since I had the tuna at lunch), but I was also craving something sweet. I don't normally consume sugar, so I decided to eat butterscotch (sugar free/fat free) pudding with skim milk. Yes, I know it is packed with preservatives and wasn't the most healthy choice, but it was what I had on hand. This wasn't a new food because I usually consume it with no problems a few times a month. It was eaten over a 30 minute period. I started getting a severe stomachache along with sliming, burping, and belching 30 minutes later. The belching would bring up some of the pudding along with thick mucus and saliva. Whatever I tried I could not get myself to vomit. This went on for 5 hours! I didn't want to take an antacid or stomach reliever because I didn't think I could keep it down. I continued to pace my home past bedtime and finally decided to take a PPI. If that didn't work, I considered going to the ER because it felt like something more serious than a stomachache was going on. Finally, I threw myself over the back of a chair and vomited the rest of the pudding. It was until then that I felt some relief. I guess I'm mystified over why pudding would cause such severe indigestion or stomach distress. I'mactually

    Serious Stall

Everyone's suggestions are spot on, but I want to add a little tip that has helped me these past few weeks. I am getting closer to goal and am not seeing the huge losses every month like I use to. After reading a research article about the antioxidants in black coffee decreasing cravings/appetite, I decided to integrate the tip into my diet. I changed my biggest meal to the middle of the day and drank 1-2 cups of black coffee during the late afternoon (3-4 PM). This decreased my need to snack in the evening or have a bigger than intended dinner. By the way, the coffee has to be black because cream or milk neutralizes the effectiveness of the antioxidants.
  10. Some of the pictures have spots. This is not a spot on the clothes, but a spot on the camera lens. I let my son use it and he apparently had dirty little boy hands while taking pictures of his toys. I will go down to $60 on the price of the bundle of clothes (all 81 items). However, I will post this bundle on ebay in 2 weeks because it is taking up to much space in my house. At that time, the bundle will be put up on auction, with the lowest bid at $65. Also, the shipping price will be higher on eBay.

    Just Read!

Before I went through sleeve surgery, I wrote a response to a post that, "I just want to get this surgery quickly out of the way and get on with my normal life.". Man, was I clueless. Now that I am six months post op, I feel like it is starting to not CONSTANTLY be on my mind. There were times when the post op process seemed so mentally exhausting. After losing over 100 pounds, I am only now starting to reap in the rewards of this surgery and my hard work.
  12. I was told that I didn't have to eat when I wasn't hungry AS LONG AS I got in my 64 ounces of Fluid, 70 grams of Protein a day, and required vitamins/supplements. Starvation mode may be a myth because I lost 100 pounds in five months while eating a daily total of 500-600 calories a day. However, my weight loss slowed way down during month 6 and eventually picked back up once I increased my daily calorie intake. I was also one of those people that didn't have much of an appetite early on after surgery. After a few months post op, I started to go through different phases that consisted of days when I felt no hunger to days when I continually felt hungry. I've also just recently started to crave sugar again. Chances are your appetite will return, but it is most important to follow the post op plan set by your surgeon/bariatrician at this time. Like others have mentioned, your lack of weight loss may be due to not getting enough liquids and protein in everyday. It is vitally important at your phase to meet that requirement to promote healing and ward off dehydration. I did liquids for a full month after surgery. Sure, I crazy hell wanted to chew on something, but sometimes you just have to suck it up and do it to get the desired outcome.

    sleeve or rny, some thoughts/questions

I strongly believe that you can lose just as much weight, or more, with the sleeve as compared to gastric bypass. I have lost 110 pounds since my surgery on October 6, 2014. I'm 38 years old and have hypothyroidism, which makes it harder to lose weight. You just need to stick to the guidelines and be consistent. My weight loss has been greater than eight other RNY patients that had surgery the same week as me. I wish you sucess no matter which procedure you choose.

October 2014 sleevers check in please!

Karthy812, Thanks for the compliment. I think you are doing great! I get hungry between meals, especially in the evening. I've heard that it's more effective to eat small meals every three hours. That is not what I have been doing, but gives me something to think about when I'm further along. I've also started going to OA meetings every week. I'm hoping that this will help me from gaining weight back.

October 2014 sleevers check in please!

I try to keep my daily calorie and carb intake low. On a good day I am under 600 calories and a not so good day would be under 700. My daily carbs are always around 20 grams a day. They use to be much lower, but have increased since I added vegetables and tiny portions of fruit. I would increase my calorie intake if I did more cardio, but right now I am speed walking an hour a day. Plus, I have hypothyroidism, which will stall my weight loss if my calories go over 800 or my carbs over 20. My weight loss for the month of March has been 12 pounds. This is a much slower loss as compared to earlier months. My goal was to get to 160 lbs by month 6 pre op. I'm only 6 pounds away right now and I'm not going to beat myself up if I'm not there in 9 days. My original weight loss goal was to get to 160 lbs, but I have lowered it to 150 lbs after looking at the BMI chart. My primary care physician thought that I looked good enough to stop losing weight, but I disagree because I'm not at a healthy weight according to the BMI chart. I am going to try to get to 150 because I would actually like to be at a normal weight. I'm tired of going to health screenings and reading that my printout says that I am overweight or obese. I think it is okay to be skinny as long as you are healthy.

    Herbalife after surgery

Herbalife was one of many weight loss plans I tried before surgery. The Vitamins and supplements gave me a lot of energy and my mood improved. Some of the supplements suppress the appetite as well. I could only afford to do the Herbalife weight loss plan for two months. I lost 20 pounds and then gained it back once I quit. The above response is correct. It is best if you go back to basics. Good luck!

I will be 6 months post op in 10 days. I've started to notice an increase in hunger and a larger capacity for food. In the first four months, I would be full on 3-4 ounces of meat. I hardly ever ate vegetables or fruit because I was always full after my Protein serving. However, I've been able to eat vegetable or fruit after my protein during meals because of an increased capacity now. It kind of makes me nervous. I have yet to eat any sugar or junk food, but I'm nervous about starting fruit because of all the carbs. I've worked hard to get this weight off and I'm afraid weight loss will get even more difficult as time goes on. Anyone else notice such changes with their sleeve?

    Loose skin

I've read that your end result will look the same no matter how slow or fast you lose the weight. Your body (or skin) may not snap back if it takes you two years or 6 months to loose excess weight. Your skin has more time to catch up when you lose slowly, however. It just takes the skin a little longer to shrink when you lose quickly. It doesn't mean it will never shrink.

October 2014 sleevers check in please!

I am in a size 10/12 pants and size M shirts. I was at size 18 for a long time and bought many cute pants in size 14 and 16. To my surprise, I was only those sizes for THREE weeks. This may be due to a sickness, but it seemed I just flew from an 18 to a 10. I wish I didn't waste so much money on size 14 and 16. I only have TWO pairs of pants that are size 12 (they are loose) and one size 10. There have been days when I wore pants and shirts that were way too baggy because I ran out of clothes. I hate it because it makes me look sloppy. I did have clothes in sizes 8-10 from my thinner days 10 years ago. Unfortunately, I sold them in a garage sale two years ago because people always say you will never get back to your pre-pregnancy weight ever again. Never say never!
  21. Okay....I just read that he does go for a one mile walk. I just hope he doesn't injure himself before he is able to shed 250 pounds (his goal).
  22. This guy has tremendous strength and determination. I still despise running even after losing 112 pounds. This is probably because my mother forced me to be a sprint and long distance runner on the track team for five years in in junior high and high school. Even though I wasn't a particularly good athlete or ever won a race, it was still forced upon me. I wasn't even overweight, but still found it humiliating. I have lost my extra weight by eating healthy and walking 1-1.5 hours a day. This is speed walking and it usually equals 3-5 miles daily. Although I did lose some weight with this exercise regimen before surgery, I have to give the sleeve a lot of credit for helping me as well. Wouldn't it be more ideal for this guy to walk 1-1.5 hours daily instead of practically killing himself with a 5 mile race once a month? I have read research that states that walking an hour daily burns just as much fat as someone going to the gym and doing cardio for 40 minutes 5 days a week.

    Loose skin

I agree with the stretch mark theory. I lost 100 pounds in 5 months (112 lbs since pre op diet) and have loose skin in only the one place I had stretch marks, my lower abdomen. The reason stretch marks reside there was due to a past pregnancy in which I gained 70 pounds in a short period of time.. The stretch marks were flat and faded, but the area refuses to flatten back out. I was worried about my chest, but it has improved slightly in the past few weeks. I'm going to give it more time, especially after I hit my goal weight. My friend had some results tightening up sagging skin with a silicone body wrap she wore under her clothes everyday for awhile. You have to be quite consistent with it and it's not cheap.

    Had my first foaming...

I actually threw up/foamed 90 minutes after eating the kale. It's odd that it took so long to upset my stomach. It happened 15 minutes after taking my bedtime pills, which included an antibiotic that I had been taking for a sinus infection. So, it either was just the kale or a combination of kale and the pills. Either way, I had extreme nausea and stomach upset for 10 minutes before it happened. I threw up kale and pills at the same time. Throwing up half way dissolved pills is quite nasty. Although I felt tons better afterward.
