Bariatric Vitamins make me sick
Hawk7775 replied to angieprks's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My program required me to buy a 3 month supply of Vitamins and Calcium from them. The brand was OPurity. They are not terrible. Are you taking the vitamins on an empty stomach? I have found that many vitamins make me nauseous if I take them on an empty stomach but I am fine if I take them after eating. -
I have seen things that say it can stretch from over eating, from drinking too fast and from drinking carbonated beverages. I have also seen things that say the part of the stomach that stretches has been removed and at most it can only stretch 5%. I am hoping to get input from others as to what you were told by your providers or what you have learned and where you learned it. Thanks in advance for responding.

It is just amazing how we can all have different experiences. Maybe its just because I am only 6 weeks out but I am fairly certain I could over eat by an oz or 2 if I wasn't careful. The example I can think of is that last weekend I got into a social situation where we ended up at a restaurant. I ordered some baked fish. Like I said I am fairly certain I over estimated and other than feeling fuller I didn't experience anything negative

eating constantly!
Hawk7775 replied to Sunnyskies2283's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just looked at my records. Don't know if this could be it but I usually get between 80 and 100g of protein a day. -
Thanks. I know about slider foods and am dealing with the whole head hunger stuff. I asked the question because I have seen conflicting things and because at 6 weeks out there have already been a couple times where I had to estimate portion size rather than measure. every time this has happened I assumed I estimated wrong, ate too much and am stretching my sleeve and dooming myself to failure. Its so funny to me that before surgery I found every way to cut corners on diets to allow myself to eat more and now I freak out about possibly eating 1/2 to 1 oz too much in a meal.

Also are you getting your Protein? Protein and some good fats make you stay fuller longer. -
eating constantly!
Hawk7775 replied to Sunnyskies2283's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Are you taking a PPI? They say that acid mimics hunger. Is it head hunger? 600- 800 cals is about what I get at 6 weeks out so that sounds ok. I eat Breakfast, lunch dinner and an evening snack. I get hungry before meal times but not too much in between. Do you have a provider you can ask about your meal plan? I am in the soft foods stage and they initially recommended 3 meals and 2 mid-day Snacks of 4oz Protein shake but OKed the way I am doing it now. -
Am I a canidate I have two co-morbiditie
Hawk7775 replied to belindaray's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It all depends on the insurance company and Dr. My insurance company says 30 BMI without co-morbidities or 27 BMI with 2. -
Sleeved a week ago. Feel no different?
Hawk7775 replied to violin08's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I felt the same way as you. Others have explained why. I just want to add that I was told even if you aren't feeling full you still need to follow the amounts of food your providers tell you to consume. I think the point was that it can be dangerous to over do it because you don't feel full. Re Vitamins - my providers required be to by a 3 month supply from them. They use Opurity. They aren't bad. -
Why are some weight loss surgery patients so clueless?

Just want to clarify. I wasn't calling anyone in particular stupid or a jerk. -
Why are some weight loss surgery patients so clueless?
Hawk7775 replied to VSGAnn2014's topic in Rants & Raves
I didn't read most of the 13 pages of posts but want to put in my 2 cents on the main topic of this post. This site is great because it brings together people who are or are headed to the same destination - WLS but often from very different perspectives. Every insurance company has different requirements, every surgeon has different procedures and every dietitian has different opinions. Thus, pre-op plans and post-op phases can be very different for each of us. For example, my pre-op diet was 3 shakes, 2 bars, unlimited vegetables and 3oz Protein per day. Others have been liquid only. Those are vastly different but neither is wrong or dangerous. Some people ask questions because their process left them with little guidance. Others may ask questions to compare advice given by different providers. Some people are worried about everything - especially that their results are not normal. It is also true that some people are just plain stupid. I think it is fine to post a general rant about your general perceptions as to others' knowledge, commitment, dedication etc based on their posts. It is something else to attack someone who asks a question directly - even if it is a stupid question. Nothing useful can come from that. I for one am the type of person to look at everything critically - including advice from my doctors and dietitians and I would encourage everyone to do the same, This site is one of my resources. Just a couple examples - My soft foods diet from my dietitian says I can have ground turkey but that ground beef is a "problem food" and that I can have mashed potatoes, whole grain crackers and whole grain bread while at the same time saying that a ritz cracker or white bread is a "problem food." That doesn't make a ton of sense to me. Does problem food mean that there is a danger of splitting my sleeve open if I eat ground beef instead of ground turkey? Many providers have a way of answering questions without really giving you a straight answer. Maybe I come on here and ask a question to help me decide if my dietitian is telling me that ground beef is a problem food because it is fattier than ground turkey or if it is actually dangerous at this phase. I might not even want to or intend on eating ground beef but I want others' input as to what their programs are telling them. I don't need or want to be called names, accused of being a failure and otherwise lectured for that question. My thought is that if your inclination is to do one of those things, just move on to the next topic. The alcohol one is a great example. Many providers say no alcohol for a certain period of time. Is it because it is dangerous? Is it because it is empty calories? Why do they say that? For me, I asked my surgeon if I could have a drink at a special occasion 5 weeks after surgery. He said yes. He warned that alcohol is empty calories and something that can hinder weight loss. Perhaps someone else's dr. said no. By posting here and asking the question, the person could learn what other's doctors have said and could then ask appropriate follow-up questions of his or her doctor to learn why the dr. said no. If the dr explains that it is just empty calories, the person could choose to ignore the doctor. If the dr says based on your history it could be dangerous because of x, y and z, the person now knows why it is unsafe for them to have a drink. Aww heck I don't even remember my point anymore. Perhaps the thing to take from it all is some people are stupid and some people are jerks and there is no reason to interact with either of those types or get worked up by anything they post, -

I was about to respond that there is nothing wrong with celebrating by going out to dinner but then I thought of my first experience in a restaurant since surgery and I get why that wouldn't be much fun. Some ideas: 1. Buy yourself something 2. if you are married.....get the wifey to do something special for you... 3. Get a massage 4. Still nothing wrong with having a drink once in awhile When you are celebrating weight loss related occasions perhaps you could try doing things you couldn't or wouldn't do before....amusement parks, dance classes, heck taking off my shirt at a public pool, sky diving, etc.

JULY 2014 SLEEVERS GROUP
Hawk7775 replied to SMED0308's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am the same as you. I also felt like there was something wrong with me when I read others talk about how little they eat. My doc told me 800 calories is quite normal and to stop comparing myself to others. -
Looks like it is still tonight.

Sorry if I was being a back seat driver. You got this rolling and deserve thanks and credit for that. Since we have 6 teams already I think it would just cause confusion to start another league. So, I will defer to the Comish on the issue of set up but reiterate that if we do only end up with 6 teams there would be better competition to add positions across the board. Come on folks!!! We need more people to play a friendly Fantasy Football League. Any ladies who like fantasy football and are lurking in the Guy's Room are welcome. Here's the link. Draft is tonight! https://yho.com/nfl?...fcd1a7e59267c85

What is the difference between Def and D? Adding one more Wr position doesn't address the other positions. QB - 2 RB-2 WR-3 Flex - 1 TE - 1 DEF - 1 K- 1 will add competitive balance. I would also suggest opening it up to the women, doing the draft later and on a more popular site like ESPN.
-
Thanks to all responders. This is not the easiest topic to talk about. It's nice to get some perspective.

If there are only 6 teams you may want to consider adding a flex and making it a 2qb league. Otherwise every team will be an All star team

I just bought a new Protein shake powder. It has 30g of protein, 9g of carbs (4g sugar) and 170 Cals. I just noticed that each shake also has 2.5g of Creatine. I am lifting weights so maybe it will be beneficial. I usually have 1 shake per day. Just want to see people's thoughts and opinions about creatine.

Creatine in Protein Shake
Hawk7775 replied to Hawk7775's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No problem. It's muscletech whey protein plus pro nutrition elite series 6 star. Muscletech makes a number of different protein powders so I just gave you everything written on the jar. -
I have always hated clothes shopping. I have also always been fat. I remember having to shop in the men's department as a kid and being afraid someone I knew would see me. This kind of thinking used to ruin my weight loss efforts. I would see the scales moving significantly and then an interaction with a girl, clothes shopping or just catching a look at myself in the mirror would get me so down I would binge and give up. I just had one of those experiences the other day. The neat thing was realizing that to some degree I no longer have the choice of going out and eating a ton of food so I might just as well not go out and eat anything bad either.

JULY 2014 SLEEVERS GROUP
Hawk7775 replied to SMED0308's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery on the same day as you. I had my 6 week follow-up earlier this week. I asked my surgeon about my weight loss and if it was normal. He said they don't worry about weight loss in the first 6 week. All they care about is healing. 28lbs is awesome. Some will lose more and some will lose less. Don't stress yourself out comparing yourself to others. As long as you are following your plan (protein, water, not eating too much or too little) you will be fine. The vast majority of this stuff is highly individualized. IMHO this is one of the potential negatives about these forums. When you read about others you can't help but compare yourself to them which can make you feel bad when you shouldn't. -
I was sleeved on 7/9/14. I just had my 6 week post-op appointment. I have already lost 20% of my excess body weight. I am thrilled. I came home and tried on some long sleeve shirts that I didn't fit in before surgery and they are way too big for me. The same thing with a suit I barely squeezed into for a meeting on 7/2/14. It was so big I can't wear it anymore. I couldn't be happier with my choice to have the sleeve!
