October List of Surgery's
anewme2015 replied to 60&goin4it's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel for you. That all sounds challenging to deal with. I wonder if you should perhaps let go of protein supplements and focus on getting in your protein from food? You mentioned you can stomach meat and if you were to have eggs for breakfast, tuna for lunch, and chicken for dinner you'd hit your protein without the shakes. Perhaps skip on the veggies for now and eat more of the meats and proteins with your meals. What does your NUT suggest? Also, we don't have to be in ketosis to lose weight. Perhaps introduce some kashi Go Lean with a sprinkle of bran buds to increase your fibre, get carbs into your system and to bump you out of ketosis. Sometimes ketosis makes people sick. You may find eating your proteins and up'ing your carbs helps to alleviate some of your nasty symptoms. Obviously talk to your Dr but it may be worth a try. Anyway, I hope you feel better soon. You're allowed to be grumbly when you feel terrible! Keep us posted! -
Anyone having surgery in Oct ?
anewme2015 replied to Jenaenae84's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Other than my hubby, no one knows I've had the surgery. I'm almost 6 weeks out and down about 40 lbs. I've been in stall for almost 3 weeks actually so most of that weight was early on. Anyway, I've had the opposite reaction. No one (friend or family) has said anything! No one! I'm thinking, 'Is it possible to lose 40 lbs and it not be noticeable?!' Lol I think I'll hug the first person who says, 'Hey,have you lost weight?' -

Hey October family, congrats to everyone posting their losses. I'm eating more protein finally and still struggling with many of you with the water. I've hit a 10 day+ stall which defies logic considering I'm eating around 600 calories a day. I don't get the math of weight loss. It makes no sense to me. I'm frustrated but I've read enough posts to know it's apparently common around the 4 week mark. Ok I'm in week 5 now. It can stop! Lol I still read all of your posts. It's so great to have people to check in with. Only my hubby knows so it feels lonely sometimes. You guys are all great! Xo -

I feel you for sure. I have days I feel so hungry and I think this just didn't take! Sometimes panic sets in when the stalls last more than a few days or I feel like I've failed my water and protein intake. I find it helpful to search the before & after pictures on this site. I see how this will work and how everyone has experienced stalls at some point, particularly in the early months when the body transitions from liquid to soft to regular foods, and yet there they are down a hundred plus pounds! I also am not liking water- something I've always loved. I'm sure we'll enjoy it again. Our new little tummies just need time. You're not alone in your feelings. And have faith they will pass and as the weight drops you will marvel at how amazing you look and feel. This will work for us because we are putting in the work! Xo -

It was a group session and we were all told that internal injuries could result of we exercise too early. Perhaps they're just being overly cautious. I'll wait the 6 weeks maybe and then introduce light aerobics. If I avoid twisting or doing abs I'll probably be okay. -

So I had my one month post-op appointment (even though I'm not quite a full month yet) and I was a bit disheartened. The staff says absolutely no exercise for 9 weeks (other than walking- which is not something I enjoy due to foot issues) and after that light water aerobics can be added. They don't suggest aerobics or hitting the gym until 6 months! Doesn't this seem really long? I want to maximize the 6 month 'honeymoon' period and exercise has always been a big part of me successfully losing weight. It seems a lot of bariatric people exercise much earlier. Is anyone from the October group exercising yet? When have you been told you can start? -

Best of luck to your hubby, Edie. I actually laughed out loud over the dog and mustard thing. You kill me! That great sense of humour and attitude will carry you and your husband through this process! And Ron- although we've never met, I have been incredibly moved by your story. Your perseverance and strength is inspiring and your wife's support and love is admirable. You are a lucky man in some ways. Each day things will get better for you and you will gain strength and you will walk and maybe even run 6 miles again. It can't be easy but for what it's worth, you have this community pulling for you. -
5 weeks out, pain, nausea
anewme2015 replied to otillie03103's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It sounds exactly like what I experienced when I allowed myself to become mildly dehydrated. I had to set an alarm and drink water throughout the night and up my fluids during the day. The nausea disappeared immediately after increasing my fluids. I'm not a doctor but it may be worth a try. Hope this helps. -

Reading your posts have been great for me and it seems getting ourselves into a routine is key. The people feeling good seem to have a solid well-planned routine. Sometimes creating a routine that will work for us takes time. I think we should all take a deep breath. Many of us are not fulfilling our water and protein requirement. And this is ok. As we can eat and drink more, we will. Many of us are not losing weight (at all) or as quickly as we had hoped. And this is okay. As we're able to eat and drink and exercise more, we will. We got this! There is no perfect journey. And I imagine if we look to how we ate before starting this journey, we have all made amazing lifestyle changes. Let's take a pause to pat ourselves on the back and breath. It's going to work. It simply will! -

[quote name="Cali_Angel" post="4000370" How do you get your b12 shot? and does it hurt? like burning or anything? I have a prescription for it. I take the vials to my Dr and she administers the injection. It just eliminates another pill I have to remember and because it's an injection it's not limited by our malabsorption from the bypass. The needle isn't bad at all. I didn't feel the injection but after she sorta massaged it in and that hurt a bit like a sting. Really not bad at all. Hope this helps! -

I started puréed foods on Wednesday. Since then I've tried puréed tuna with a tiny bit of low fat mayo, cottage cheese (yuck), chicken breast w/chicken broth, one soft boiled egg, and a low sodium low fat bean soup- all of which were blended into a thick baby food consistency paste. I even tried some baby food. I have a cupboard full. I won't do that again! Lol I've been able to up my portions from 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup so I'm happy about that. Dr says I'm not getting in enough calories and eating more will help me lose weight faster. I'm always low on the protein because I can still only stomach one premier protein drink. I add ice cubes and water and blend it so it's not so sweet and thick. And I'm always low on water. I am having bowel movements every 5 days and it seems this is only because on the 5th day my Dr said to take a Senekot if I haven't gone. Is anyone else experiencing such infrequent bowel movements? I dropped 18lb pre-op for a total of 35lbs as of today, but it's been slowing down lately. Apparently this is normal when you initially switch into the next stage and eventually it all evens out. I'm still napping here and there. I had my first b12 injection yesterday (I'll have them once a month) so I'm hoping that will move things along too. It's great to see we are all having similar experiences and stalling together and moving forward. Keep posting here. I so don't want this thread to die! Lol -

I feel for Ron's family. What an emotional roller coaster. I hope things work out for the best. He has proven himself to be a resilient fighter. Anyway, we are all pulling for him. I hope we get good news soon. -

Each person's program is different but to contribute to the pills discussion. I take dissolving Biotin, and the rest of my Vitamins (2 Multivitamins a day and 3 Vitamin D w/calcium a day) are all chewable. My Dr was very strict abt ONLY doing chewable for the first 6 weeks. Not sure why but I'm following orders. I've had to take a stool softener and it's small so I've been swallowing that but it's not easy. And I'm so relieved to hear that Ron is home and doing well! -

.I think I may be eating too much or too soon with my Water. It's so hard to get everything in and food. I'm required 64 oz water and 3 meals a day. I can't do 3 meals. I had turkey slices and cheese today and I was fine. Then for dinner I had chicken and peas. Ate like 2 peas and a few bites of chicken and I vomited. But my chicken was spicy. So maybe that's it.. idk. I'll have to call my clinic and ask. Let us know what they say. Hope everything is ok and that you're feeling better soon. -

Dehydration sounds scary and it's a good reminder to us all to sip sip sip. My stall is done I hope. Down a lb today. I'll take it. One thing I'm wondering is if any other 2 week post-ops are breaking out? My skin is terrible! -
I recommend premier pre-made protein drinks but add ice and some extra water and blend. The protein drinks are easier to stomach when they're not so thick and sweet. Hope this helps!

I sometimes dry-heave when I first wake up in the morning but I've started having water by my bed and drinking before getting out of bed. It seems to help. I don't think you're supposed to be vomiting. You may wish to contact your clinic just to be sure. Sometimes vomiting is a result of eating too quickly or drinking while eating or too soon after eating. Are you doing any of those things? I'd also recommend measuring everything to make sure you're not accidentally eating too much. I would love to tell you you're not alone but from the literature my clinic gave me, we're not supposed to be vomiting. You need to follow the diet guidelines carefully though to give your body time to heal. I'd avoid moving through the stages too quickly. Hope this helps. -

I'm with you both. Surgery Oct 19th and great losses then bam! Nothing for 6 days. Not a pound. I've heard of this stall though so I'm not sweating it. I am eating so much less than I used to. Mathematically it must work and it will. We have to just stick to the program. I wonder if I'll drop more once I'm off liquids and eating puréed. I've heard that often people lose more steadily once their calorie intake isn't so low. Anyway your posts make me feel better. I am experiencing so much of what many of you describe. We are not alone and we will do this!!!!! -

Hello October family, congrats to you all! A quick update to share my journey. I'm still only getting in one protein shake a day, I seem to have a mild intolerance to dairy (I can handle a little but there's a point if I have too much- ouch! Ouch! Ouch!), I seem to bounce between diarrhea and constipation (which is super fun) and I'm tired of sip sip sip and drinking my meals. My one incision is a bit infected but I'm cleaning it regularly and taking it easy. AND since starting Optifast pre-op shakes on September 28th, I have lost 30 lbs as of today. And for that I'm in shock and awe and so flipping happy that I'll sip sip sip, avoid dairy, and drink my meals like a champion! And eventually I'll conquer even those nasty protein shakes! Lol -

Thanks for posting your stats. Very impressive. I notice a significant drop later in your weight loss journey and I'm just wondering what you did there to speed things up. Is that when you started to exercise? When did you bring in exercise? Thanks again for posting and your pics are so inspiring that I've saved some as my own inspirational 'wish pics'- I'm 2 weeks post op and started at 255. I hope that's okay! Haha (not creepy I promise) Anyway you look amazing! -

[quote name="sylviaflowers" I'm so excited for this journey now though. I'm amazed at how much happier I feel already! When I first came home I had pain but it was manageable. The downfall for me was emotions. I would cry over small things and I just couldn't understand it because I'm not a crier. I think after surgery my body just felt vulnerable and I had to learn how to cope with that. I'm better now but I think being on shakes only has really tested the little bit of patience I do have. But I just try to see the silver lining in all of this and remember this is only temporary and I wanted this. The journey and all the obstacles I endure now will just benefit and reward me later. Sent from my SM-N915P using Tapatalk I hear you with the emotions. I cried trying to paint my toes yesterday! Lol -

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile. I was only off for a week from work. I literally returned to work 1 week after surgery. I only did half days though, but I'm exhausted once I'm home and I take a very long nap before picking up my daughter from school. My recovery has been amazing! I only had gas pain when I was discharged, which was the day after surgery. The gas pain was the WORST!!!!!! At home, during the night, I'd walk and walk to help subside. I took Gas X, which moved it, but it wouldn't pass. Felt like a brick was sitting in stomach and back. By Thursday it was just about gone. My RNY was on Oct 12th, I've lost 14 lbs. It's tough getting the fluids in. I've lost my taste for my Mios and Crystal Lights, jello, and the popsicles....so it's just water and protein shakes. I've tried a few baby spoonfuls of yogurt and very loose oatmeal. That's been great! I haven't been hungry at all, I wasn't missing food or anything until yesterday. I started craving a grilled cheese sandwich from Great Harvest.???? Oh well. In week 3, my diet includes an egg or 1/2 an egg, canned/packaged tuna and salmon. 1/4-1/2 toast or crackers, which begins on Tuesday. I haven't done much exercise yet, I've had one minor complication. Well let's hope it continues to be minor. Monday is was planning to go walking on the treadmill. Something.....not too fast. However, after I dropped my daughter off to school, I realized I was very winded and had an accelerated heartbeat. Has anyone else experienced this? My surgeon's office had me go to the ER. They thought possibilities of pneumonia or blood clot. Thankfully it was neither. Not really sure it was. Maybe just my body still healing. Please share with me if you experienced any of this. I haven't had an accelerated heart rate but there's no way I could really exercise yet. (Had surgery Oct 19) I find short walks are about it for now; however, I have these little bursts of energy (woo hoo I just bolted up the stairs!) only to be met later with exhaustion (I walked from the chair to the fridge and whew I need a nap!). I'm with you on the liquids. Little bites of yogurt, oatmeal, cottage cheese but mostly it's oh yummy pass me another protein shake! Haha
