Should people barely over 200 lbs or below 200 get Lapband or any WLS...?
luluc replied to Froggi's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
froggi - i read your original post & it still has the same impact, as “obese individuals” are we going to categorize who should / should not be afforded the opportunity to WLS.?? BECAUSE i was a healthy overweight person & my insurance would not cover me - that's a consideration to take in. I spent many months dealing with my Ins Company trying to get mine and DH’s lap band approved…..which they cover. After month 6 and BCBSTX changing the requirements on the fly - I threw a fit, was fortunate enough to go to cash and was done & scheduled in 10 days. This IS a health insurance issue IMO. The fact that our health system is OK to give another "pill" for the next comorbid that we encounter VS having a surgery that can tackle obesity grates my last nerve. I am very active politically - to an annoyance of some (mostly inlaws) - WLS & it's results can yield a world of health unto an idividual .... we shouldn't be the judge or jury of "who's able" to get the surgery of choice - it should be "as policy holders" our right to determine what's best for our health. not board room members. -
pappadeaux's is one of my husbands FAVS - he treats "hot sauce" like i do fine wines. we have a pantry full of every kind known to man. he'd put some on a donut if i'd let him:rolleyes:

renewed - saw you recent photo updates ; you look great, congrats on 15lbs in a month! great nsv - my oldest brother. he was scheduled in FL to have the lapband 2 times in the last 4 months and each time cancelled. he's a big wimp...LOL well he was in town 3wks ago and hadn't seen me since i was 200lbs - his surgery is 7.11 & won't be cancelling this time around. he was beyond impressed w/the results & that of my husband (also banded). he's a great guy, needs to drop 100lbs to fight some comorbids and be around for his 5 kids. sometimes these NSV's are more impacting that the scale!!

you've just put out a poll - that's been placed many times in the last few months - many annoyed that those under 200lbs should be able to get the band. i view it differently - i contributed to the economy to the tune of $30k (hubby & self) & i have insurance. luckily retired at 35 - ; the fact that Insurance doesn't want to participate in actively prohibiting the onset of comorbitities related to weight is an atrocity. -
they're out running???? LOL i seem to keep dropping my goal weight - so i'll get there at some point~

congrats jody!!!!

Absolutely. If your still in an unhealthy BMI range, why should one have to diet vs WLS? Because being 200lbs is marginal to some? I've said this in another thread (200+lbs to loose) - I guarantee "most" would have wished they took it upon themselves to deal w/their weight, sooner rather than later. My stats were: 38yr / 200lbs / 5'1. This put my BMI at 36.8 and well into obesity mode. Now my Insurance wouldn't pay - but I did & paid for my husband to be banded the same day w/a BMI of 35. I feel there is absolutely no reason to feel a tinge of jealousy for those who wish to deal with their weight on their own dime & nip it in the bud before it gets way out of hand, and comorbitities take over. -

Becky - 121lbs!! that is a fantastic accomplishment - hope your feeling a bit better today w/some rest. Frangi - the GIRLS look GREAT!! glad your back home! I'm in Tampa for some of Aug - visiting parent's - could "escape"..LOL to miami for a meet up... -
carrie - i always work in increments of 10lbs. first goal, get out of the 190s, then 180's, 170's - & so on. it was relatively easy to work with 10lbs for me, VS the 80lbs i want to loose all at once. in all, it manages to be around the 2lbs per wk that was recommended by my Dr. some wks i'd loose 3, some 1 - some i just stay the same...good luck to you!

As I’ve been reading this thread – I get why it was prompted. I didn’t have to dig down deep to figure out which type I was – I already knew: someone who LOVED food but STOPPED being active. The moment I stopped working out, the weight came on & I did not appreciate friends and family telling me I just needed to hit the gym again….duh, I knew that. But it was like Kat’s story, I decided for a period of time to feed the unhappiness “wolf” – and she loved pasta & wine!! Rock bottom comes in all forms – mine had to do with moving my size 6 clothes to a spare bedroom to make room for the 16’s…..and all the sizes in between and I was climbing up the scale DAILY. Sometimes I feel guilty reading these threads because this has been easy for me. The diet – didn’t have to change too much, already ate decently (had to cut back some on the wine though). Exercise – can’t stress enough how important it was / IS for me to have back in my life. I’m pretty selfish these days, and for me that was probably the hardest part of band life for me. I constantly ran and took care of everyone & everything else, and I let myself not only go in the physical form – I shut down socially because I then became embarrassed by my weight. So now I feed the Happy “wolf” (she gets wine 2 – just not as much) & I personally enjoy being fit & healthy a thousand times more than when I choose to ignore the sadness that enveloped me with the additional weight on.

no more than the normal squishing / squeezing that goes w/the territory. i had my first mamogram & sonogram last wk since being banded and there was nothing out of the ordinary. band had zero impact.

have you tried to mix up your exercise routine? every 3 wks or so my trainer changes up our sessions - to shock the body & start working on other body parts. i think it's normal, as your building muscle for the scale to stall some, so long as inches are coming off. as for your last fill - i had a similar situation, which required me to get 2 small unfills because the solid proteins became a struggle. i didn't want to rely on shakes (also not a recommendation of my dr). for me i have to work to not get in a rut either with food & exercise to keep the scale constantly moving at least a lb a wk - good luck!!
