Obesity can make both men and women less fertile, and if you are able to become pregnant, it makes your pregnancy higher risk. You are more likely to develop gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia, and your child is more likely to become obese and develop diabetes later in life.

Weight loss surgery patients can realistically hope to become parents, and losing a significant amount of weight can make for a healthier pregnancy and baby. However, you still need to be very careful. If you have had weight loss surgery and you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, you may be at high risk for nutritional deficiencies that can harm you or your child.

An article in the February 2014 edition of the journal Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases identified Vitamin B12 and folic acid as some of the common nutritional deficiencies among pregnant weight loss surgery patients. Low Protein levels can also be problematic. Deficiencies were found among gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and biliopancreatic diversion patients; lap-band patients were not included in the study.

If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, plan your nutrition carefully to be able to support a healthy baby. The rule of thumb is to delay pregnancy for at least a year after weight loss surgery while you focus on losing weight. During your pregnancy, the focus needs to be on good nutrition for you and your baby. Consult with your physician to get the best advice, and continue taking your Vitamin and mineral supplements to prevent deficiencies.

That is all we have for this week’s newsletter. 3. Jaz... I was scheduled to have my surgery at 8am... Got to the hospital at 5am as they told me... They prepped me and took me to the holding area at 7:30... At 8:30 the two nurses said we have some bad news... I thought I was going to die... Words I just couldn't digest .. Then she says there was a mix up and the surgeon does not come in until 1... I didn't want to get upset but I thought about leaving ... Thinking maybe this was not meant to be ... However I had gone through this whole journey... I was not giving up.

Stay focused... You can do it.

Linda... You are funny.... Thank you for telling me that.... I live in Florida also....

  5. Does the feeling of gas pass after a while you are drinking ? When I drink my Protein Shakes I can feel gas.... I burp and it goes away... Someone please tell me this is not forever. Last question.... Will I have to sip the rest of my life or will I be able to gulp.... I love in Florida and I have to drink my Water when I am hot.... These are things I never thought of asking....and is it forever without a straw? Thank you for all your support.

  6. I was just sleeved on Wednesday august 27... Monday is Labor Day and I plan on going in on Tuesday to work. I am a teacher and I work with small groups with reading intervention and the children come to me. If I feel like it's too much I will go home ... I don't require a sub....but I hoping it will be fine.

  7. I know it is different for everyone... However I was wondering when people started to go out... Not back to work... But just out. The reason I asking is because I was sleeved august 27... Three days ago ..... I have a hair appointment .. Just a wash and blow dry... Should I cancel it or go. I feel pretty good. Just curious when everybody else started to venture out.

Once your swelling goes down it will be easier to get the Protein in. Listen to your body and rest when you need to rest. I had a surge of energy about a week and a half out and then BAM I was dog tired and it took me a couple of weeks to get my energy back. Delayed reaction? Everyone is different. The caffeine withdrawal could be a HUGE factor in your lack of energy. I'm so glad I got off the caffeine weeks before surgery. Hang in there.

Kathleen

  11. Hi I everyone...just got home yesterday ... Got sleeved on Wednesday ... So a couple of questions for all you veterans... I feel very tired... Normal? Also I have no appetite.... Normal ? She started me on full liquids... Did clear in the hospital and I was able to tolerate it... So if I gave a couple of sips of Soup or Jello is that normal ? Or should I be eating all the soup... Also my Protein Shakes? Drink a whole one? If I get discomfort is that a signal to stop? I gave this info in my book... But I feel like the people that are actually experiencing this are better equipped to give advice. Thanks so much.

First, congratulations on such a huge step. You are in your way to better health.

In terms of what is normal, everyone differs but here's my experience.

I was dog tired the first 2 weeks (sleeved 7/14/14) and didn't get energy until week 3. Part if it was due to caffeine withdraw. I used to down coffee in the am and Dt. Pepsis all darn day. Add to the fact that I just had major surgery--sleeve and hernia repair at once--and I was straining just to stand for 1 minute! I am back to drinking coffee but it is a mixture of 80% Decaf and 20% dark roast caffeinated. I have banned Dt. Pepsi and soda as well as any other drink with caffeine.

Also, your calorie intake is very low due to restrictions in diet so its only natural to be tired. Follow the eating plan they gave you but I say stop when you feel satisfied. I made the mistake of going a little overboard and regretted it the rest of the night. I threw up and had a serious stomachache. Be sure to stay hydrated because you won't find yourself wanting to eat but definitely be mindful about when you feel satisfied.

I am 1.5 mos out and still can't finish an entire shake. I can get down about 1/2 to 3/4 cups of soft foods in a meal then I have to stop. Soup of about a cup.

Good luck to you! I am sure you'll do well. Remember: Protein, Vitamins (if prescribed), Water, water, water, and get up and move even if its only 5 minutes at a time. It gets easier. I still get tired by about 3 pm but I try to power through. Going to start incorporating light strength training into my regiment. That will help with energy.[/quoteThank you so much... Glad to know some of this is normal ... I too had a repair of a hernia ...I am do happy to know that I can just have little bits... Again I don't have an appetite but I know I have to stay hydrated and take my vitamins. Thanks again for responding !

  13.
I replied on another post but I wish you all the best alyce. I'll keep you in my prayers. I took things and I didn't need them. I was too medicated to do much of anything but pee, walk, sleep, pee, walk, sleep and then when I was cleared to drink: pee, walk, sip, sleep, pee, walk, sip, sleep……...

My surgeon uses two IVs so you are completely full of fluids--gets your butt out of bed a lot to pee too ;) . I did use my cell phone to make a couple of calls. I'm sure the people I talked to could tell I was pretty out of it. Oh well. That's OK.

Walk as much as you can to prevent blood clots and get the CO2 out of your body. When you are cleared to drink--sip, sip, sip because you can't drink very much at one time. When I got home from the hospital I continued to sip, sip, sip and walk, walk, walk.

I hope you have an uneventful surgery and easy recovery.

Kathleen

Thank you so much Kathleen ... Leaving now for the hospital...I will keep you posted on my progress
