Protein vs. Calories? How much to survive?
sunflowerchild replied to LightlyMyDarling's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am about 5 months out and my dr said I should be aiming for 1100 calories a day. As a side note, I'm eating a significant amount less than that and have lost about 70% of my excess weight so it's possible he has tailored this number calories to my specific situation. I have trouble getting the calories in consistently. -
Some very basic questions
sunflowerchild replied to Totoro's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I do eat spicy food but no you aren't supposed to drink anything carbonated and I personally don't drink carbonated drinks. -
where did you sleep?
sunflowerchild replied to MisforMimi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I slept on a recliner for about 10 days. My significant other moves a lot so I was worried about him hitting my sore spots in his sleep. Even after the 10 days I put pillows between us to avoid any nighttime collisions haha -
I cut off 12 inches 4 months post op and I love it! I had very thick hair pre op and my hair was coming out A LOT. It was really gross and bothering me a lot so I just decided to go for it. I figured, it's just hair... And it will grow back. And I could always get a wig if it turned and that terrible. I also donated the hair so that made me feel even better about the decision. I'd say go for it ! Good luck

I Want Soda ... BAD
sunflowerchild replied to mnmlst's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My personal belief is that everything is fine in moderation. This is a way of life that I have to stick to forever so I don't believe in completely banning myself from eating anything, unless of course it makes me feel sick after eating it. Granted, some people need a lot more structure in their post op life and I can certainly appreciate that. I think it comes down to being honest with yourself. If you can have a flat soda or a slurpee or whatever as just a once in a while thing then great. But if you are the type where giving yourself too many options is like opening the floodgates than don't do it. Edit to add: if you were hooked on something pre op I think it's pretty clear that it's something you should avoid post op. I didn't have problems with drinking soda so having a slurpee once in a blue moon won't throw me off course. -
Migraines/Allergies/Sore throats how do you handle it?
sunflowerchild replied to mrsvw's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I get really severe migraines. As a result my dr prescribed me Carafate. You take it before an NSAID and it supposedly coats your stomach therefore making you less vulnerable to ulcers and what not. I always try Tylenol first and even when the Tylenol hasn't worked, I have only resorted to an nsaid a few times because of my own fear of complications. It might be a good idea to ask your dr his opinion on the Carafate and see if he would prescribe it to you for an "emergency" migraine situation. Sometimes it's nice knowing you have a plan b just in case it becomes too much to handle without an nsaid. -
I Want Soda ... BAD
sunflowerchild replied to mnmlst's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had a coca cola icee (like 1/4 of a cup maybe) and I drank it very slowly and was fine. Maybe this would satisfy your urge? I don't plan on trying regular soda anytime soon. I tried some wine not realizing it was carbonated and it did not feel good at all. I also don't really want to get in the habit of drinking soda. It wasn't a habit before surgery but I wouldn't want it to become one. Some people are fine drinking carbonated beverages though so who knows?? To answer "why no soda?": the carbonation, and it's not nutritionally beneficial. -
1 week post-op, already having hanging skin!

Start moisturizing religiously. This could definitely help for the future but won't do much for the skin that's already loose. -
Questions for surgeon?
sunflowerchild replied to Kabby_Chick's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you do a search for "questions for surgeon" among the forums you will find many answers to your request as this question has been asked before. Hope this helps. -
I had very thick hair before surgery. 3-4 months out I started losing a lot of hair. I would fill a hair brush with my hair every time I brushed. I wasn't getting in enough protein at the beginning so I think that could be part of it. Also I tend to lose hair after a "trauma" to my body. I broke my arm once and my hair fell out a lot... I think my body just didn't react well in that small sense to the surgery. I decided to cut off 12 inches of hair (& donate it) and now I love my hair, I have an average persons amount of hair, and at about 6 months out I'm losing much less hair. The way I see it is, it's just hair and it will grow back. Losing the weight is much more important to me. Good luck!

I have 3 pairs of jeans sizes 16&18 that I will give to free to whoever wants them. If you could compensate me for shipping that would be great. Shipping would be around $10-$15 via USPS and that comes with $50 insurance, tracking, and 2 day shipping. They are a bit wrinkly from being pushed into the back of my closet but are clean and come from a smoke free home.

I have some protein & vitamins to give away
sunflowerchild posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If anyone's interested I have some protein powder and vitamins. I will attach pictures so you can see exactly what the products are. Both bags of protein powder are open and missing about 1/4-1/3 of the product. The punch protein powder has an exp date of 3/2015 and the cookies one has an exp date of 2/2016. I bought them at the same time so not sure why the dates are so far apart. The vitamins are all sealed and I have two bottles of each kind pictured (except for the GNC vitamin D). They all have exp dates in 2016. I am willing to give them away but would ask for compensation for shipping if possible. Shipping through USPS for all products would be about $15 for priority mail (this includes: 2 day shipping, $50 insurance, and tracking). -

This is the return address for Vitamins. I'm not sure on the details because it was through my Drs office. They did all the leg work pretty much. They mentioned that it depends on your insurance how much of the cost is covered. -

I have some protein & vitamins to give away
sunflowerchild replied to sunflowerchild's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I just take b12 and flinstones multivitamins. I've had my blood work done numerous times since surgery and my levels are always great. I think I get a lot of vitamins from the food I eat. I get most of these vitamins for free because of my insurance. I don't use protein powder anymore, I get protein from protein bars and food. -
Two size 18 & 1 size 16
sunflowerchild replied to sunflowerchild's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thanks for the input. The 10-15$ estimate was based on all three pairs so shipping 1 pair would certainly be cheaper. I don't have a printer though so I will be doing my shipping via the post office. -
