    For struggling new bandsters

Thanks for the great advice. I had my first post op appointment on August 17th. The doc & nurses all said I was doing fabulous. Now I have reached a plateau. Nothing lost, nothing gained. I know I am eating right, exercising, and drinking enough fluids....just dont have a fill. I wont get a fill until September 14th. Your advice helped reassure me, that I am doing the right thing. Thanks.

    Have you motivated others?

I have motivated several people at the agency I work for. One has already met with the surgeon and setting up a date. The others are waiting on the insurance.

Hi Spunky welcome to our circle of South Dakotan bandsters! It is always good to know you aren't alone is this battle. I have reached a plateau nothing gained or lost since august 12th. I wont get my first fill till Spetember 14th. Dr. Reynolds said I am doing everything right, just relax, finish healing & keep up the good work.

    fun thread -- names

My maiden name is Haugh. Pronounced (Haw). You can imagine the different pronounciations teachers, employers, peers and other people come up with. (Hag, Hog, Hugh, Hoe!) I think Hog was the worst because of our family being obese. I remember one Christmas a so called friend gave me hog(pig) ornaments for my CHristmas tree as a junk. That wasn't so bad, but when she made the comment "Well you and your sis are the "Hog" sister!" OH was I ever mad! Needless to say I lost all respect for her that day.

I have a surgery date need help plzzz

I did the Optifast Pre-surgery diet. A registered dietician set me up with it pre my surgeon's request. It consisted of 8oz protein shakes, protein bars and protein enhanced chicken broth. I could also have water, s/f koolaid, s/f pop, any low or no calorie drinks. I took a total of 10 days off for work and I am glad I did. I guess it just depends on what you do at work, my job is similiar to a nurse aide, not a desk job. I just returned to work this Monday. I was still tender, but okay, I did sit down more than I usually do and am still on weight restriction. Best of luck to you!

  10. Welcome to the group! You are taking the right step in a great direction! I haven't had my band long, but so far so good. I think it was the best decision I could have ever made. I have lost 22lbs total including pre banding. I had to do a liquid diet pre band for two weeks. I am still on the thick liquid phase (post band). It isn't too bad. My hubby still gets three normal meals a day, but I get liquids. The day I came home from the hospital I was miserable and was thinking OH GOD what did I do to myself? But as the days have passed they get better. I am really feelin like myself again. I went back to work yesterday. I wasn't quite my busy self as usual, but I did my fair share. Best of luck to you!

    Nutri System Diet?

Try a low carb diet. When I was first diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, I went on a 10 carb a day diet. (Per a registered dietician.) I lost 24 lbs and have kept it off since then. I also switched from regular to diet pop, drank sugar free koolaid, crystal light and ate sugar free and lowfat items. I had to wait a whole year before I was banded because DH's insurance considered it a pre-existing and would not cover it till we were married a year. It will happen for you, but I wouldn't waste money on high price FAD diets they aren't worth it.

    Lucky

DH and I also have Dakotacare! They are an insurance company. They have never given us any argument about anything. I also have Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield but they won't cover the Lap Band. (But my employer is switching to Dakotacare September 1st!)

  17. I had to do the liquid diet as well. Optifast protein shakes, bars and chicken broth. I lost 12lbs prior to surgery and I will admit I slipped a couple times.

    Days off work!!!

Welcome! I go back to work tomorrow morning. I work as a Direct Support Professional (similiar to a nurse aide) and there is lifting and lots of physical activity involved. I am still on restriction for another week (nothing over 20lbs). I had surgery July 29th. I know some people only take two or three days, but I am SO glad I took ten days. It just depends on you and what you do for a living.

    Why are YOU Fat?

I am fat because I eat well. I love chocolate and good food. Family/Friend functions always center around food. "Who's bringing the potato salad and chocolate cake?" Lack of exercise. I quit moving (walking, riding a bike, running) when I got my first car. I was always fat from about age 3. My parents and grandparents are/were all fat. I was teased and tormented all through school because I was fat. I eat fast...slowing done now(post op), but old habits are hard to change. I eat out of boredom. I will conquer this battle and I will win!

Protein Shake tastes like card board!!

My dietician said I could substitute a protein shake for a meal during my post surgery full liquid phase. I have used Body for life shakes, Boost, Optifast and Beneprotein (From the makers of Benefiber). It is a stir in protein powder...no flavor and you can add it into anything!

    New Exercise Idea

I came up with a great idea for an easy exercise program. That about anyone can do. While watching tv. When the commercials come on get off the couch and walk back and forth through your house. It doesn't have to be fast....just walk. I have a problem watching the commercials...all the junkfood, fast food and food period....makes me think I need it...so if I am up moving during those commercials I don't see them and still enjoy my programs. Plus the added benefit of exercise. Of course 30mins of regular exercise a day is good too!
