7 year veteran RNY gastric bypass and failed but still have hope!
rte837 replied to Kmartinez15's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi. Just read your post. I had RNY 2003. Started at 241 lbs. and got down to 133 within 18 mths. YAAYY!! Put by 66 lbs. HATED myself. But I'd been through too much (pd. cash, too!); too much money, effort, miles walked, lifted a ton of weights, swam till my skin was puckered. I screwed up my courage and went back to Dr. Yes, he let me try diet pills. No big help. Yes, I'm a grazer. But I wasn't ready to give up. Had UGI, endo. and found pouch and anastomosis was stretched; my fault. Still, he was willing to do a revision. Paid cash again; most insurance won't cover a revision. Am down to 150 +/- 10 lbs. I've learned to be happy with that. Still overeat; still graze; still have wrong foods but in smaller amounts. Get an opinion from another Dr; one you don't work for. Don't give up. You've invested too much. Good luck. -
12 hour drive 10 days post-op?
rte837 replied to drmeow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You would be fine. One week after my RNY, followed by a SBO fix, I flew from Fl. to Las Vegas. Wear TED hose, stop every 2 hours. You should be fine. My flight was about 4 1/2 hrs. NS. -

To bangbangBarbie; A pt has a right to be respected. This reaction was neither spoiled nor bratty and this forum is for ANY kind of concern pertinent to our experiences. Support is what we should be sharing; not judgement. -
I had it. For me; it was definitely the caffeine! Water till you adjust.

Drainage catheter
rte837 replied to Jaymmie Hengle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The purpose of a drain is to remove Fluid from where it doesn't need to be. Often, the Dr. preference and/or type of surgery dictates this. But also how your body is removing fluid. So, if you have a JP (jackson-pratt) drain, when the fluid accummulation gets less and less, they take the drain out. Mine was in for about 2 weeks. I had Laparoscopic RNY. When I had plastic surgery, I had drains in for various amounts of time. The face; 1 day. Tummy tuck; about a week. Circumfrential body lift, 4 drains and it was about 2 weeks. Best person to ask IF you will even HAVE a drain is your surgeon. Then, how long is dictated by need. Good luck. -
Your Dr. is not wrong. It's so important for everyone to remember; there are many right ways of doing things. If you trust your Dr., go by his/her recommendation. It that doesn't work for you, THEN try an alternative.

I didn't crush anything once the g-tube was out. Just swallowed them as they came. Started the pills about 2-3 weeks after sx.

Per my surgeon; post op was calcium and multi Vitamin three times a day, Iron once a day, b12 once a day, Vitamin D once a day; did this about 1 yr. Now it's just one calcium and one multi Vitamin A day, one iron a day, 1 b12 a day. I also take daily prevacid and a prozac. Get them in one at a time. Yes, it helps keep the pouch full and me healthy!! It's all good.

Can't believe your Drs office said it's not related. It most certainly is. 1-the stress factor 2-the anesthesia and 3-the pathophysiology of the surgery!!! DUH! to the office!! As you lose weight, the estrogen, which is stored in fat, is released in large amounts at a fast pace. That effects the cycle.

I'm always surprised by the variety of recommendations from different Drs. My first two weeks post op was broth, Jello and Water. Two full weeks; then to solid food as tolerated. Barely ate any food. Don't recall when I started Vitamins (2003; rny). Don't worry so much about the food. Drink, maybe some Isopure for Protein. But like my Dr. said, we have plenty of excess calories to use up for the first few months. Be happy you don't feel like eating. "Make hay while the sun shines!!". Trust me, you'll eat more than you want to later. Good luck.

I'm a nurse and Nuclear Medicine tech. I was off just shy of 2 months. No lifting; and YOU know; if you go back, you are going to be lifting and pushing and pulling and stretching! It's not worth the risk. I flew about 10 after my sx w/o problem. Still had a g tube. Wore TED hose on a 4 hr. non-stop flight. You know what to do; walk, ted, drink. No problem. But work? I'd wait. Best of luck. (RNY and sx. the next day as well for a bowel obstruction. In hospital 5 nocs.)

Estrogen is stored in fat. As you lose weight, more estrogen is put into your circulation, changing things. Talk to your gyn.

Ulcer, What does it feel like?
rte837 replied to Homecie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had a few. Sometimes crampy feeling, mostly dull ache that won't let up. Eating more often than not helps it feel better for a little bit. But, if it's an ulcer, that's an odd place typically. You'd expect it in the mid abd. or maybe to the right of mid-abd; and by that, I mean above the umbilicus. It happens by the anastomosis. That having been said, every one is different. It could be adhesions. Best to consult your doctor. Good luck. -
buttercupdobbs; THAT's definitely a question for pharmacist or Dr. Might need a blood test to check levels. Pookybear; There's NO reason why you can't just use OTC calcium with D. The specialty thing is a farce. Calcium is calcium. I use Caltrate with D. Wait for a coupon, or buy one, get one 50% off. Walgreens, Walmart; any of those is fine.

Revision as in re do the RYN; or from sleeve to RNY? I had the re-do of RNY. I did not feel particularly weak. If you take your Water and Protein, you should be fine. The burning fat should provide energy. But, after major surgery, of course you won't feel 100%! Yard work, routine house work after 6 days post op is not reasonable. You need time to heal and acclimate; but if you temper yourself, you shouldn't feel so bad.

I wanna sandwich- 5 weeks out
rte837 replied to avermette's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Go ahead and try; but just a bite. OR, I would take a cracker, put tuna on top and a small piece of cheese. That was enough. If you really try a sandwich, I guarentee you will be very unhappy with the pain you feel so soon after sx. Yes, we all crave something. Maybe 1 bite would help you through. Just be willing to shoulder the consequence. -
Let's talk about GAS
rte837 replied to starbuckscoffeegal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is a product called DEVRON for that very thing. Try your local pharmacy/CVS/Walgreens, etc. -
Raging hormones
rte837 replied to starbuckscoffeegal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As you lose weight, estrogen that is stored in fat cels re-enter your circulatory system. You probably do need an adjustment But it might also be a mourning of foods. Both are real possibilities. Start with your bariatric Dr. He or she can guide you best. Good luck. -

Almost 18 months out and struggling a little....
rte837 replied to sundiate2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's never too late. Go back to the basics. More Water, chew thoroughly, more exercise and of course, look at what you're eating. My down fall has always been grazing. If you graze, try to do it with better option foods. I never did hit my goal. I'm still better off. The thing is, this is not a cure and the reality is it will ALWAYS be a work in progress for us. Good luck. -

Know what you mean about the shopping. My sister and I both had the surgery. We went shopping together for wedding reception clothes. AMAZINGLY, it turned out to be 8 hours worth! Not only could we handle the stamina for a change, but we kept finding things that actually looked good! It's quite an adventrue you're on. Don't let others' opinions ruin it for you. They are allowed them; even if they are wrong!! -

People have a hard time when someone they know/love changes. Thing is, YOU are healthier. Do you like yourself better? And besides, you can always have a face lift (I did); can she change her attitude?? Truth be known, most fat people look younger because the fat stretches out the wrinkles. There are times I notice this; especially on my lower arms. But believe me, I wouldn't go back to fat !
