Sugar, Not Fat, is the Culprit
Stevehud replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
Let me say this is other terms. And im not trying to be mean spirited. When someone comes out and says, "hey, i know , and you're being deceived" that's a big red flag for the ultimate in a destructive personality. People like to hold on to some bt of knowledge they think gives them an edge or step up, over people they deem less knowledgeable and lower than them in life. Its a means of an inflated ego and used as a sort of pseudo self confidence. It happens a lot. A very famous I remember reading a paper , ( for the life of me i cannot find the author) a few years back, and it dealt with people who make a huge lifestyle change and then they absorb the change so much they become an "expert" in the change that they themselves could not undertake for such a long time. Its why we have so many people that go through this journey and then become "experts" in weight loss and fitness etc. While they dont really acknowledge the facts of their own failures and faults in the exact field they have grown to become so involved in. I do believe one of the points of the paper had to do with addicts becoming addiction counselors and being shown to have a higher rate of empathy, but a lower rate of success than those who never had addictions. Im sorry but to say anyone is being deceived is a gross misrepresentation of the truth. No one is out there thinking mcdonalds is healthy. Every one of us knew that we were eating badly. We all know about sugar being bad. Anyone who says "i never realized" is lying out their butt. We knew it, we ignored it, we chose our lifestyle, its part of overcoming this. We have to take responsibility for ourselves. Or else this is all just a simple exercise in blame and futility. Seriously look at these forums, you'll find hundreds who say after 2 or 3 months post op, they are munching on 2 or 3 Protein bars a day, regardless of the facts the nutrition information on them shows they are terrible for weight loss. But people so it. All they have to do is read the nutritional info on the label. ANd they just ignore it. Its part of our humanity that we decide to ignore what we want. No doctor who claims we should blame it on some hidden cause and only THEY know the answer, will ever be anything more than a money grubbing danger to people in general. That kind of svengali like cult leader attitude will cause nothing but problems for those who folow. I have a friend who lost a lot of weight, and then proceeded to constantly explain to everyone why they just needed to do this and that, and how the gmos were out to get them etc. End result? That person alienated a whole ton of friends who no longer wish to be a part of this persons life. This is the exact same response you get when someone is taken into a cult. -
Sugar, Not Fat, is the Culprit
Stevehud replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
I have to say several of these "doctors" are so full of crap. Sorry to be blunt, I do believe that sugar is my problem, and i lose as long as i avoid them, but fats play a huge role as well. and i'm sorry but anyone who listens to doctors who are selling a diet, a book or a series of videos or a website etc, deserves what they get. They are simply in it for the money. To say that sugar is toxic and coupled with industrial food? Andrew weil is about as realistic as luke skywalker. Im sorry but i have a major problem with people who were fat their whole lives ( like me, and yes i am not afraid to say FAT) then all of a sudden they lose weight and as fast as that they are suddenly experts and start telling others how they are living badly. People shouldn't answer questions they were never asked. -
1500 calories seems quite high to me. how close are you to your goal? literally i was on half that until i hit my goal and Im on maintenance, and on avg i hit 1200, 1500 is very very rare.

9 months post op and still can't keep food down
Stevehud replied to GinaSq's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Im kind of confused here, you say your starting weight was 228 pounds, you wanted to lose 140 pounds? so your goal weight was 80 pounds? Something not right here? and it cant be 40 pounds you wanted to lose as no one gets surgery for 40 pounds, so whats the real deal here. and whats with the animal crackers? That makes no sense. also you say your at 131 pounds yet your ticker says 190 pounds. None of these numbers make any sense at all. -
theres no reason to eat extra on a workout day when your trying to lose. that the whole point of weight loss. It sort of sounds like your looking for an excuse to eat just because you work out. DO NOT fall into that trap. you have enough stored energy in fat cells than you need. so until you hit goal and beyond, you dont have to worry about eating more.

Long Term Results of Sleeve Gastrectomy
Stevehud replied to careya123's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
thats the best damn attitude to have! be the best , keep it up! -
long have their been books about calories not mattering and fats being good, look at the eades, atkins etc. but trust me when i say, what works for one of us doesnt for others. for me its sugars, plain old sugars avoiding them and i avoid gaining, i literally went to almost zero sugar during my first year [post op and dropped all my weight in that first year. take in more sugar and ill gain back. So for me its sugar then carbs then fats and calories. But sugar is the biggest single thing. You have to find what works for you. but starches ( which are sugars) and carbs along with sugar, is the real enemy for me.

BMI and other peoples opinions
Stevehud replied to kranky813's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you want to stop because truly deep inside you think that this is your weight, and you cannot possibly continue on . then fine. stop. But if you are stopping because you think other people think you look better? or because you ant to quit or think itll be easier. Then do not stop. Maintenance is not easier than losing. Its actually harder. There is not magic, I hit my goal, now ill stop , button or plan. It doesn't work that way. You aren't Dieting. you are changing the way you eat for life. For your ENTIRE LIFE. not just a short period. The journey NEVER ends. You can't switch it off. unless you want to fail. We call this a journey because it is a never ending journey. It is not a destination. If you want to say YAY I hit my goal! fine go for it. is it your best? Did you do all you possibly could to make this happen for you? Are you happy being overweight? These are things only you can answer. -
Self-Sabotage & why I eat crap
Stevehud replied to Ruth1ess's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
sure ill share this one caveat i discovered about myself- Its easy. Everything easy is good. don't fight things, you life goes easier. its easier to eat crap to not plan to eat easy things, to eat a lot, to sit on my ass and just eat. So what do i do , i take things easy. i look for the easy way out. a magic pill? sure , itll happen . fen phen? loved it, cemical fix. if i wait long enough ill get a new drug thatll work. Unfortunately thats just denial. When you learn that, its the first step to getting better. Unfortunately there are a lot of steps in the stairway to weight loss. -
The bariatricpal store looks great, but.......
Stevehud replied to eclecticwingtips's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
They arent as good as real food certainly but their nutritional profile isnt bad and they are apparently delicious so i figure they can be used as an occassional treat Sent from my SM-T350 using Tapatalk 22 grams of carbs per bar is not anything to treat with. -
I'm not sure why anyone dating would expect the relationship to be exclusive instantly. If someone wants an exclusive relationship there should be a conversation about it. Playing golf in the afternoon and going to dinner once doesn't make me someone's girlfriend. That is like some guy buying you a drink at the bar and thinks he owns you for the night. I really don't think that is normal behavior, especially not for GenX. Dating more than one person is not game playing. There is no reason to dedicate all you time to one person. Especially if you are a young woman looking for a partner to have children with. Dating one person at a time really narrows the net you can cast. Believe me these guys are casting the widest net possible. on a first date sure no problem, but we dont want to compete for you either. see thats something women dont really understand about men, well okay thats a huge generalization. but you have to understand, we compete just by our general nature. its what we are as men. One of my favorite relationship things was that for example, when a woman comes home and tells her male about so and so at work, or that their boss did this or that, we as men want to fix it, so we tell you what to do, or what we think you should do. But you aren't asking how to solve it, you just want someone to empathize with what you are saying, not get to the facts and solve it as a problem to be solved. This illustrates a lot. if i find out your dating 2 other guys and me, then immediately i have to classify myself in a hierarchy pecking order of which one of us is best, so i have to now compete for you, and the whole time we are dating i will remember in the back of my mind that you have others waiting in the wings and i have to work hard at this, then why am i in it. Thats how we do things. So while no one SAYS you have to be exclusive, we dont want to be just another guy standing in line. And for guys that have been burned before, we will instantly take the words " seeing other people" as a warning, and many of us will run the other way.

lol down to earth to me would mean, your not esoteric, not into the glamour and glitz and not into the Kardashians and everything is expensive tastes and champagne etc.down to earth can also mean lazy and boring . a couch potato. someone who doesn't like to go out and be active just kinda low and slow.
-
i am married and as such cant speak currently to the holding pattern juggling thing, but ill say this, any guy who has been burned once by a woman seeing other men even while dating, will just walk away or let it all go because they dont want t to risk the same thing happening again. I do find from friends a big issue is woman who give off the, im fine without you vibe. Its an instant turn off for them when a woman treats dating like its the lowest thing on their list of "to do" items. While you dont want to appear needy, you also dont want to seem like everything else in your life is more important.

3 months out and cheating
Stevehud replied to emilymarie822's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
sigh, its not cheating, its just eating. you dont have to report it, or anything like that you just have to get back on track. Please dont listen to the moderation crap. unless you want to lose just some weight maybe, and take a long ass time doing it. Eating everything in moderation makes you moderately fat. period. when people tell you its okay to cheat , they will fail. do not listen. its not cheating its just eating. Every Time you eat badly, you just lose more time in your honeymoon period and the losing gets harder and harder as you go forward. dont fell bad just move forward. you can do this, and that is it. So just move forward dont beat yourself up. but dont plan to fail either. You can do this. -
Did anyone's spouse lose attractiveness when they got close to goal?
Stevehud replied to Chrystee's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
literally my wife is the reason i have succeeded thus far. she is my rock and the reason i do this. we joke about me having bones now ( watch those thoughts, now now) and we joke about the changes to our sex life ( you can check the mens forums for those thoughts now ladies) she has grabbed ahold of my success as a chance to lose a bit herself and has truly embraced my success with me and its been a godsend. WHen the alternative is not being on this earth for very long the way i was going, its a lot better now. -
ive learned since i dont do flying very well, ( claustrophobia amongst others i guess, , i usually take a sedative, ativan or valium and try to relax. lol

no snacking for me until i did hit maintenance. it just makes no real sense, if you need to snack, and youre hungry, eat Protein, dont get in the habit of snacking on a regular basis or you will simply make it harder for you to succeed. I do snack now and then , but im in maintenance As i said, and i eat usually pork rinds, gets me protein in. arrgh!, yes im in a pirate mood i guess.

strawberry kiwi wasnt bad by any means, not my personal fav but if you like that flavor combo, it might be perfect for you. my recommendation with all the nectars is obviously use Water with it, not milk or any other product. the colder the better and if you can, blend in ice with it, if you do blend it, let it sit for 30 sec or so before you drink it to avoid that frothy settling , like the head on a beer etc. also i have found that flavor with some sugar free lemonade mix added or sugar free squeeze lemonade or iced tea flavor goes great together.

PTSD or Compulsive Eating Disorder Sleevers?
Stevehud replied to Marie2016's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
this surgery will not work without therapy or psychological help, you have to get your head in the right place before you get your body in the right place.
