My Gastric Sleeve Decision

Support...Struggling to be supportive!
Stevehud replied to ButterflyMiss's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
no one is qualified to make any decisions about your situation except you. Ill give you some things from a man's perspective. I had my sleeve in December. thanks to my pre-op diet and the surgery im down from 362 to 292. every morning i look in the mirror to see the changes because when other people saw them first my eyes didn't see them, but now that I do, its fun to revel in it a little because i never could before. Its kind of a man thing maybe, like the male peacock we have an instinctual need to show off to someone. Every day my wife hugs me and says how proud she is of me and how good i look and how well im doing, but she also reminds me she loves me at any weight, as you have said as well. It is, i have found, important to me to have the positive reinforcement on a daily basis, my wife, my friends my coworkers all do it and it helps me reestablish my goals and my resolve to get through the boring meals and such. Now this is me, I cannot emphasize that enough. My wife who is not obese per se, she is 5 6 and weighs 190 but has lost 15 pounds by eating healthier etc and she goes to the gym with me and we have made weight loss a part of OUR lives not just my life. I think this really helps us. A big side effect is how much we save by not eating out etc. Now some of what you have said does make me think that if it were me in your man's shoes, I would see someone in psych to help with why I'm not able to adjust to the lifestyle changes. I wouldn't blame the doctor either, you never know what your man is saying to them to elicit the responses they are getting or even if what he says is accurate or just what he wants to hear. I wouldn't worry about him being too small at 220 pounds unless he is 6 foot 7 or above thats not a bad weight. Now I am 5 foot 8 and my surgeons goal weight is 170 which made me laugh at first but now I'm all into it. If you are afraid you won't love him being thin, then the problem is not him being thin, it with you not being able to love a thin person. Now this is just my opinion. Good luck to you both, I hope it all works out for you. -
I'm not RIGHT, you're not WRONG, WE ARE DIFFERENT.
Stevehud replied to LipstickLady's topic in Rants & Raves
I agree with you in so many ways you would think I am lying. But the truth is i LOVE opinions. I hate when people promote thier experiences as if they are the only, be all end all of rules for weight loss and WLS. I make it a point now to say In my opinion in any post where an opinion matters. I do not want, in fact I dread someone coming n here and taking my opinion as something they should do. Even when i do my taste tests and stuff on my blog i don't say "hey get this shake" i just say how i like it and what it tastes like to me. I am very leery of giving medical advice or advice that could be construed as medical to someone. If something is a noted scientific fact like earth is the third planet from the sun, then sure thats great, and to be honest lipstick, you do say in my opinion or its ben my experience etc, but you are correct if someone asks a question and gets an answer that is an opinion, and someone has a differing one, it gets very bad very fast. That being said you are an inspiration to a lot of people and thats the best opinion anyone could ever give to the rest of us. -
Why just true love after weight loss? Why not true love before, during and after? I am blessed in that I truly found (here comes the cliche') soulmate in my wife. She is the biggest supporter I could ever want and I am lucky to have her. Its amazing what someone who truly cares for you can do. I am always reminded of a piece written in a story by my favorite author Robert Heinlein. He wrote " my definition of love is when the well being and happiness of another person is essential to your well being and happiness." I have always found that to be very apt.

Welcome to the Popular Diet Forum!
Stevehud replied to Alex Brecher's topic in GLP-1 & Other Weight Loss Medications (NEW!)
vry similar to the atkins diet is the eades diet a husband and wife doctor team that specialized in diabetic patients. ill get the link from amazon for the book. its basically a lot of what you know except pretty might you throw yourself into ketosis with limits on carbs, very low , and the like. I likes it because it was much simpler than atkins and seemed a lot less fat too. But I truly don't want to follow any diet that's why I had surgery ...right? ..isn't that how it works?..ha ha ha ha ha. just joking. -
Not I esskay but its great to see a fellow Massachusetts sleever on here!

I've gone from head hunger to head guilt
Stevehud replied to beachgurl84's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know what you mean I feel guilty about eating anything sometimes, and I even find myelf thinking , "ill just go back to a few shakes a day instead of food", which as I have been scolded by my nutritionist is a no no. I don't know if everyone goes through this kind of thing, but I certainly understand your feeling as well. Im 5 weeks post surg btw. -
here's a question why do you say "clean bariatric diet" are the rest of us dirty?
-
Blerdgirl- id did not mention you or your name, but there are people on these forums and posts that tell people specifically to ignore what they have been told by their nutritionists and doctors and it is dangerous and negligent. People assume that what works for them is the be all end all of what MUST be best for all. When it is absolutely not true. I actually discussed this very thread with my nutritionist about 4 hours ago, and her answer was perfect in my opinion. She said if someone came to me in her position and said they wanted to use organic, whole and natural foods, "I would work with them to come up with a plan they and I are happy with to maximize their weight loss and maximize their food goals." That's the kind of answer that should have ben given to this person who started this thread. as in. Ask your team to help you meet your needs with the food choices you are trying to make. Why is that so hard for anyone to do. Yes some people have had nutritionists they don't like, don't agree with etc. But that doesn't mean anyone has the right to hijack someone else's journey. Think of it like this, I am sure you have seen or met people telling you horror stories about WLS, we didn't listen to the and went on our own path, well let people do that as well. You want to share information, SURE! its great, but remember that it is information for you. Many have reminded me that it is necessary to write that advice you have is based on what works for you, it is your opinion only! I've often been told on here that I act like a know it all, well here's a truth people don't like to believe. Having bariatric surgery does not make a person an expert in nutrition, bariatric surgery or anything related to it.

How upfront was your surgeon about a goal weight?
Stevehud replied to MisforMimi's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
my surgeon asked me what i wanted and then said my goal should be about 20 pounds lower. lol Bit my goal weight on my ticker etc is the one he gave me. my goal weight is what i assume my bounce/maintenance weight will be. but we shall see id love to beat them both. -
i too was in december, dec 16th to be exact and yes its a big pain in the butt, but so far its already worth it. This is a tough thing. I osted something earlier that is actually sticking with me, and I like it, and this is : Weight Loss Surgery May be a one time thing, but this lifestyle change is a lifetime thing. It will get better. weight loss and being healthy is something we can all do. I know you can do it. youve come this far.

Getting super anxious about food after w4 postop
Stevehud replied to elladvyne's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
you're going to be using shakes for a long time, so try your best to get used to them. Here's just my opinion, every ready made shake so far I've tried was intolerable by me. Just my opinion. although premier vanilla, was ok'ish it tasted like cake frosting to me, but thats tolerable. if you like, I do video taste tests of many different flavors and products on my blog, at http://cuttingthefatwithaknife.blogspot.com I also recommend trying the small individual packs to see what you like. But you will need Protein shakes of some kind if you want to meet your protein goals. food isn't easy after surgery and some, more so than others. I personally, have come to depend on them for those times when I'm working and just can't take time to cook something. (not that I can cook at work mind you LOL) -
im going to play devils advocate here and say simply "listen to your doctor and weight loss team" no one here has a medical degree that I know of. so do not vary your prescribed diet because someone else said so. Here's a little fact, a lot of people here on BP ate no chemical , all natural stuff and they were still morbidly obese. So take that to heart. I can guarantee you no one here got obese eating organic broccoli. no one should tell you to ignore your weight loss team, and listen to them, PLEASE PEOPLE STOP IT. Unless you are willing to take the consequences if they fail, stop telling them to ignore their team. you are not them. to say what you do is fine, to blatantly say, oh your person is stupid or any such is ridiculously negligent to the extreme. Every person has a separate journey, let them have theirs, you are on yours because you are not perfect either, stick to your journey, it should be hard enough for you to make your journey without trying to control someone else's. I am sorry if anyone feels offended by this, but its the blind honest truth.

When will I actually see a change?
Stevehud replied to AJP1243's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
i had my sleeve a day after you, but you cant take anyone elses weight loss and compare it. my changes have been drastic , i went from 5x shirts and 4x sweatpants to 3x shirts and 2x sweatpants and they are both loose. im taking my first set of post surgery measurements tomorrow, ill let you know the real differences then. -
actually i use the adult Centrum chewables which 2 chewables, is 200% for all including Iron. which is what my nutritionist wants patients to take. So some centrum products do meet requirements easily. I looked up the requirements online and Centrum meets or exceeds them in every aspect. 100% of Thiamin Riboflavin Niacin B6 Panthothenic acid 11%calcium ( i take calcium chews daily) with Vitamin k Iron Phosphorus 5% Iodine Zinc Copper 50%manganese 17%chromium Molybdenum 27% and low vitamin d is very common in the northeast due to lack of sunlight exposure year round.

3 weeks post op only lost 15 lbs ????
Stevehud replied to hootney1214's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
well said babs, well said. im there as well i was upset , i am 35 days post surgery and I was a bit upset that im only down 37 pounds. then i realized thats over a pound a day!, so now im switching from daily scale reading to weekly scale reading. no reason for us to beat ourselves up anymore than we already have. -
I actually asked myself.. is this really worth it?
Stevehud replied to CowgirlJane's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
the truth is, people who arent going through or havent gone through this just don't understand that while the surgery may be once ( or more depending) this lifestyle change isn't a one time event, it;s a lifetime event. While I don't relish the struggle, and i know ill have some pitfalls , none of us is perfect, ill accept that, but we have to do what we can when we can. And i have the utmost faith in you cowgirljane. and hopefully in myself. I can see how this can just throw anyone for a loop, it took me 4 years of constant soul searching to decide if i had the (excuse my words) testicular fortitude to carry this through . I do have those thoughts like, "Well, when I can I'll just have ONE sandwich and SOME french fries. Or ill just have a side salad with my turkey club. But the realization that even that is something that is seemingly out of my reach forever, is...depressing and always threatens to overtake me, but i lean on people. Here and my wife , friends, and coworkers etc. -
Weight loss surgery on Public Radio this morning
Stevehud replied to Engteacher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
"The struggle is real and until the surgeries start taking place in our heads many will always struggle....I'm afraid. " I love that.....Surgeries in our heads, it is a very apt thing to say. -
Weight loss surgery on Public Radio this morning
Stevehud replied to Engteacher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
yeah just don't read the comments more than half of them are ignorant and inflammatory, and I know inflammatory! But this lady obviously never had the psych counseling that I can see now as a requirement. If I approached this as a cure and as soon as I could ran to McDonalds Heck of course id gain the weight back. -
Non flavored protein powder
Stevehud replied to fuzzyangelbear's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Jaimelogical is right, it isn't actually 30g of Protein because a tablespoon is itself only 15 grams and it doesn't take a mathematician to see you cannot get 30 grams from 15 grams. without imploding the universe that is. lol I have a request in to them for a response and for taste test samples. -
nsv...i am a skiier!
Stevehud replied to CowgirlJane's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions

i noticed there are a lot of lawsuits, now showing up on youtube as well, if anyone mentions tourism etc or any hospitals doctors and isnt happy they get hit with a cease and desist order immediately. they are fighting to suppress any bad press at all. or anything even relating to bad press. bit touchy.
