Shakes Versus Bars - Switching Back
Stevehud replied to heynowkc's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
for me Protein bars are a strict no no, my nutritionist outlawed them like the plague. So for me i wont touch any of them, 99% of them have WAYYY too many carbs anyway, i keep my carbs to 10g or under per day in most cases. I do recommend trying syntax nectars though especially the fuzzy navel, and wild cherry, and grapefruit for people who dont like shakes, if you like kool aid or mio then you'll do fin with those go on ebay, and order the single serving packets to try them, ( use Water or diet iced tea with them and they're great. mix amazingly well with fruit if you wish and ice in the summer as well. especially mango and strawberries and peach, yum, -
When I see a seriously overweight young woman, I have this overwhelming urge...
Stevehud replied to LipstickLady's topic in Rants & Raves
a coworker of my wife was sexually assaulted by a dolphin while swimming with them in florida, and from what i understand its not an uncommon occurrence either. which strikes me as weird . i think this thread got of course fast, the difference between thinking that you want to help someone ( great humanitarian thought) to walking up to someone telling them they are fat and telling them how t fix it, is leagues apart, and lipsticklady never said she would do such a thing. people went way off base here folks, i wish people would do better reading and not inferring. That being said there is a saying the psychiatrist i went to said and that was, "Overweight people who are happy being overweight, are also happy being in denial." when i asked about that she stated that clinically people who are hapy being overweight have developed as a coping mechanism, the ability to ignore thier won weight on a daily basis. Now I am not a psychiatrist etc so I have no idea, but im assuming it is akin to when i was a smoker I used to say i was happy being a smoker and really enjoyed it and id didnt quit because i didnt want to. I know looking back it was a cop out to my addiction but again thats just me, i cant project that on others. -
Debunking the Myth that Fast Food is Cheaper than REAL Food
Stevehud replied to LipstickLady's topic in Food and Nutrition
we actually agree on the end point blerdgirl, i think a lot of people eat fast food out of laziness disguised as convenience, i know i did, and yes i save alot more buying food portioning it and cooking it myself, heck i can get a ton of meals out of a head of broccoli compared to the small amount i get ot of a bag of frozen, or even pre cut. my current favs are a half turkey half beef meatloaf i bought individual little loaf pans and i make a half dozen or so at a time and then freeze them right in the pan then when its meatloaf night just refrigerate leave for work come home pop em in the oven and bang. its too easy. and the butcher i go to loves the fact i eat Protein almost exclusively and always jokes about cutting up things for me. i personally love many of the vegan products on the market, no im far from vegan but these products do help me with my weight loss, as I know youre probably aware of how good they can be. For example theres a brand called Maya Kaimal, Indian foods, i love the chickpea chips, and they are sending me a bunch of free foods to taste test for my blog, i love Indian food spices sit very well with my sleeve and they keep chicken from getting boring and many are vegan , in addition to say coupons etc, this is a way i supplement my food bill as well. heck ive had so many free shake mixes, drinks, and food for taste tests its been wonderful. -
Debunking the Myth that Fast Food is Cheaper than REAL Food
Stevehud replied to LipstickLady's topic in Food and Nutrition
Blerdgirl as i said i do believe it to be cheaper when taken in the long run, but cheaper now is different than cheaper overall. For example if i buy 15 dollars worth of bread and deli meats i can make sandwiches for the week at a cost of 3 dollars pr sandwich, but i have to outlay 15 dollars, i have to take the time to shop , take the time to make the sandwiches each day. i have to have something to pack them in, maybe they dont have the ability to refrigerate per se at work. So they take the easy way out, they spend 5 dollars a day buying a 5 dollar combo meal at wherever, now to them them its easier and cheaper to purchase the daily sandwich/burger etc than it is to make the food instead. Now obviously they could save even more if they bought some chicken breasts maybe cooked them all on sunday slice em up to be made into sandwiches each day but to many people they wont take that time to do it and they would rather pay 5 bucks a day than 15 bucks at once. But i do think that most of it is laziness wrapped up in what we call convenience. -
Charity on my 600lb life
Stevehud replied to AmyFromCincy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
the show is so painful to watch, because so many times you just want to reach into the screen and shake people. I mean cant the daughter see what's happening and realize she is well well on her way to being there herself? i know im being judgemental, but its so hard not to be. Maybe when they see themselves on tv it will be a wake-up call, i hope. i just dont want people to go through what so many of us obviously have., sigh. maybe its selfish to think that way.I dunno. -
Debunking the Myth that Fast Food is Cheaper than REAL Food
Stevehud replied to LipstickLady's topic in Food and Nutrition
when people say fast food is cheaper, i think its true to a point, of course, its not cheaper when you look at how much wight gain costs you in medical bill, clothes sizes, etc etc. But in many cases such as inner cities it is in fact much cheaper, in NYC for example, large grocery stores are rare and many people have the choice of small boutique stores, bodegas etc or speciality shops, butcher shops for meats, etc, so it can be daunting, I will agree a big part of this is convenience aka laziness on the part of people, it's easier to grab something than it is to cook, A friend described it as they work until 5 bu due to transportation issues they dont get home until 6:45 then if they cook they dont get to eat until 7:30 8 o'clock and they dont have time to eat that late, so grabbing something is the option many people choose, also for people who cannot save, they cannot drop 100 bucks at a time on a weeks groceries, so they spend the 5 or 6 bucks to get the meal daily. SO there are many contributing factors, but all in all if you make the time and effort it surely canbe done. I know i never realized how much i spent on fast food and eating out until this surgery, which forced me to cook more, which i love anyway but was so lazy and tired every day coming home from work, i just got into those lazy habits and the rest is history. Now i make sure i am prepped and ready for meals as im sure many of us are. I know on gym nights for example i have my chicken already cut , marinated , and my pots or pans are out and ready etc. , i start the cooking while the wife showers then i shower while she finishes and plates, its a great system , but nnever bothered to have it before again due to being fat and lazy. -

What was the first food you ate when allowed solids
Stevehud replied to Lifeafter40's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
pureed mashed potatoes most definitely, on the wetter side with some gravy yum, but real solids, we stopped off on the way home from the nutritionist who gave me the ok to go ahead, at an indian restaurant and i had some chicken tika masala, moist small chunks of tasty chicken in a sauce. was like being in heaven..i assume. -
Are you following a Paleo Diet?
Stevehud replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
ill agree with the nutritionists in that one we dont know what the paleolithic mans det really was, we have guesses but i suspect they ate a lot more fruit and natural sugars than i will ever allow myself, but ill say this also i know you dont eat red meat and i truly believe red meat was a staple of paleo man, probably a lot more as they probably ate meat when they had it until they could eat no more to fend off the dry spells and harsh winters etc. But on a personal note, whatever works for each person is the best for them. But best for me is not best for you and vice versa. -

Blurred vision when I stand
Stevehud replied to DroppinLikeItsHot's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
good advice all. -
a lot will depend on you personally, for example there are a lot of Protein pancake mixes out there, and if your to the point where your running a couple miles or working out heavily shortly thereafter, then you may need those minimal carbs and can sustain burning them along with your diet. But in my case, no way Jose. the closest i have come is half of a half a piece of toast with an egg one morning, or a bite of homefries i had one-day that's about it. other than that strictly Proteins. In my maintenance stages sure it might be entirely possible to have some kind of natural Kashi like cereal i suppose, oh i actually used to allow myself 1/4 cup of regular cheerios for breakfast, but now maybe once a month if that. in the summer i can see doing that more as a cold breakfast seems better. But I know if i had a waffle, even the best multigrain etc waffle on the market is not good for you, i would probably stop my weight loss temporarily for a few days and im not doing this whole thing for fun lol Good luck.

im a little concerned you dont have Iron in your Vitamin regimen, and i know with my surgeon and nutritionist, Fiber additives were a big no no until the solid food stage. but you will get labs back relatively soon.

Quest Protein Chips - Anyone else tried these?
Stevehud replied to joatsaint's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
i was in the Vitamin shoppe the moment they first arrived and im a chip freak! i was sooo happy i bought each flavor went home to watch football with some chips, I was in heaven... Which turned quickly to being in hell...it looks like a chip, sounds like a chip, tastes like carboard mixed with ass. oh my, i do not think you couldve made something taste worse unless you ate those chips threw them up and tried to eat that. i was heartbroken and out the 12 bucks as well. sigh Now literally if i try anything i compare them to those chips, " well its not as bad as those Protein chips..". etc. I personally at trader joes they sell an edamame rice mini chip that is amazing with hummus ( which are two things i thought i would never eat in my life if you had asked a year ago) also my local supermarket has these chickpea chips they have some protin which is nice and very low carbs for quite a lot more chips than i could fit with my sleeve lol, but like 6 to 8 chips with some fresh pico salsa is just heavenly , heres a link. http://www.vitacost.com/maya-kaimal-chickpea-chips-seeded-multigrain-4-5-oz-1?csrc=GPF-PA-Food%20%26%20Beverages-853325005010&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw=&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=853325005010&gclid=CJO838mWwcQCFUkR7AodYD4AYw -
When I see a seriously overweight young woman, I have this overwhelming urge...
Stevehud replied to LipstickLady's topic in Rants & Raves
you summed up the way I feel in a nutshell. it is why i give people my blog info etc. i don't say hey this is for you, or anything i just say hey check out my blog , in the hopes that maybe the idea will rub off on them. I see very large men and women and think," please, save yourself...get the help you need, don't wait like I did, don't fall into those traps. " The other problem is I am a big proponent against government intrusion in behavior , and as such I am wholeheartedly against the new mandates for school lunches for example. I really believe that the more you deny food to kids you will encourage them to have it. It is a personal thing for sure. For me, growing up, my dad ran the household, and he hid and locked up food, not everyday items, but anything dessert-like, and as such because you had to get past this food hoarding thing, you always wanted the forbidden fruit so to speak, and I know it played a big part in why i ate the way I did and in influencing me to be how I was. I do believe that good nutrition at a young age should involve all foods, good , bad etc. as long as its not slanted too much on either side. I truly believe that if you teach a child to eat in a balanced way, they can and wil be prepared to keep that balance in thier life. Im as much against the obese kids being fed the way they are, as I am against the mothers or parents i should say, that deny their kids everything in the name of nutrition. Also exercise among kids is just nonexistent. Kids spend way too much time playing video games of sports, rather than playing the sports themselves. Girls ar spending so much time texting and using thier phones, they could care less about moving around, and with schools above elementary ( whin my state at least) having done away with recess for all students above elementary, its no wonder.
