6 weeks out and not losing weight
cpower100 replied to Scarlet56's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My surgery was May 11 and I have noticed a pattern where I seem to loose regularly (daily) for 1-2 weeks and then I stay at the same weight for a week or so before I start losing again. I was really getting freaked out by the weeks I was not losing until I looked at my recorded weight loss and saw that there was clearly a pattern. It is so difficult not to compare our weight loss to others but it is also important. When I start to get hung up on where I "should" be I loose sight of the daily goals and success I gave had. -
Post Op - (6 months +) what is your calorie intake
cpower100 replied to cadladykim's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am only 7 wks but the NUT in my program said that our goal should be around 1200 good calories. -
What are your tricks for dealing with food cravings?
cpower100 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 6 wks post op tomorrow and have had a pretty smooth transition and I feel great but I am wondering how you deal with food cravings when they come up? I have stuck strictly to my surgeons program but I figure food cravings are inevitable at some point and I'm looking for the tips/tricks for dealing with them. I would really love to hear from new post ops but also the veterans who have worked thir program long term with success. -
My program says nothing carbonated at all, ever. The program also says nothing caffeinated ever and nothing decaf for first 6 mo. Are you from Boston area? Where did you have your surgery?

I am 6 wks out today and so far for me the pattern seems to be 2 wks with big losses and then a week the same or very minimal loss. It does seem impossible based on nutritional consumption but my NUT says it is a very normal pattern.

Hunger, Cravings, etc. Post-Op
cpower100 replied to sarahbee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 6 wks post op tomorrow and at this point I defiantly feel hunger about every two hours but a very small amount of food satisfies the hunger. I am actually glad to have my body feeling/recognizing hunger on its own as opposed to training myself to eat by the clock or even if I'm not hungry. I am just about to get my period and this has been a tough week for me craving wise. I am craving sweets but like someone else said the fear of dumping helps kick it and also the positive success I have had so far I am not willing to sabotage. -
I have a friend who is set to have the endoscopic procedure in July. We are in boston and there is only one surgeon who performs this procedure and her insurance has denied coverage bc they say the procedure is still experimental. She had rny about 13 yrs ago and had success but weight regain after two pregnancies. The dr explained that the outlet (stoma?) was significantly enlarged and food was just washing through leaving her always hungry.

I had a very serious life long issue with bile and acid reflux. I was told by my GI dr that the sleeve was absolutely off limits for me and I had the bypass. I can honestly say that I have not had a single episode since surgery and went from taking 8 pills a day to control the GERD to ZERO pills the day after surgery. I do know people who have had mild reflux and had the sleeve with no issues but I know many more who have had no reflux and developed issues after the sleeve as well as people who had mild reflux that got significantly worse after the sleeve and ended up revising to bypass. My advice would be do as much research as possible and go with your gut instinct and surgeons suggestion.

Has anyone used quest protein powder and do you use it for shakes or for baking/cooking? The employee at the vitamin shop I use suggested it but thought I would check here for reviews.

Diet and Pain relievers
cpower100 replied to B_Darkly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tylenol is ok (according to my team) bc it is acetaminophen not aspirin. I am two weeks post op today and I have found every plan is very different. For me week one was full liquids, week two was soft foods like yogurt/cottage cheese/oatmeal/ and puréed meats. Week three is the same as week two and week four I can begin to add in more solid meats. -
Calorie consumption at 11 days post op?
cpower100 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 11 days post op today and feeling great. The last several days I have felt significant restriction when eating dense protein but I did not really feel it today. I have been getting in lots of walking and did a 3 mile walk at 12 1/2 minute mile today burning about 300 calories. My food intake has been on par with what it should be (I think) but just wondering how many calories people were consuming at this point. Today I had a protein shake for breakfast (made with simply smart skim milk), cottage cheese for morning snack, 3oz grilled chicken for lunch, protein shake for afternoon snack, and 3oz chicken breast cooked in tomato sauce for dinner. The total protein intake was 113 grams but the calorie count was 729. I know that the NUT for your individual plan is always the ultimate authority of food issues but just wondering what you guys think in relation to where you are currently at or where you were at at my point post op. -
This is an interesting thread for me. I was a coffee lover pre-op and worked hard to give it up but man do I miss it. My surgeon says no coffee, even decaf, for still least 6 mo to lower risk of stomach ulcers. So interesting to see what others are doing and how other surgeons feel about the topic.

30 or 60 minutes after a meal?
cpower100 replied to goodnuff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told no fluid 30 before or after. I don't think I could ever get in all the fluid if I had to wait an hour on either side! -

I am taking 4 wks in total but only bc my job is very physical. I am 10 days post op and if I had a desk job I could be back at work. I will say though that while I feel ok, I am glad to be home and on my own schedule to get the eating, timing, drinking, and exercise routine down pat. -
I am wondering if anyone has any sites that they look to for new bariatric friendly recipes? I already use World a According to EggFace but looking for additional suggestions.

5 days out - Are Eggs ok?
cpower100 replied to BoerneTX's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 6 days post op and saw my surgeon for follow up today. The protein shakes which I have loved for the last year were getting the best of me and it was at the point I could barely get them down. I tried salmon and it was the best 2oz of salmon I have EVER had! I have also had Greek yogurt. I noticed that the salmon filled me up much more than 5 oz of Greek yogurt. Tomorrow I am going to make it my job to get in all my protein and water without a single dip of a protein shake. -
I'm pre op, with a post op question.
cpower100 replied to reedawn's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had surgery on Monday and was in the hospital until Thursday afternoon. I napped a lot in the hospital mostly bc I was not sleeping well at night, the after effects of the anasthesia, and the pain meds. Once I got home I was taking only Tylenol and have not napped but I am in bed and exhausted by 7:30 pm. -
I am 5 days post-op and get that very full feeling if I drink to much to fast too. I am literally keeping a water bottle in my hand all day and sipping all day. I get full the fastest and feel the worst when I am drinking the protein shakes bc they are the thickest. I think it is all a work in progress and we need to take time to get to know what works best for our own pouches.

Liver Reduction Diet... SUCKS.
cpower100 replied to erinmay93's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to do the pre-op diet twice (bc my first scheduled surgery got cancelled three days before surgery). The first time I pushed through and it was ok. The second time (just had my surgery this past Monday) felt much harder. I was really hungry and the protein shakes just were not filling me up. I really struggled but Now I can say liquids before surgery are way different than liquids after surgery. Now i am having a hard time getting in all the liquids bc my stomach fills up so fast. My head hunger still exists and some things sound like they might be good, like swordfish, but the reality is I think if I ate three bites I would explode! Keep pushing bc you are almost there. -
Anyone from Boston-Beth Israel Hospital
cpower100 replied to DR1220's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was not at BI but initially had surgery scheduled at MGH for Oct 6. Long story but I had a horrible experience with the MGH program and ended up with surgery on Monday 5/11 at NSMC in Salem with Dr. Benedetto. -

Finally in the Post Op Stage!
cpower100 replied to Mila48's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on day 4 post surgery and taking Tylenol every 6 hrs. Feeling very full/uncomfortable if I drink to much to quickly but doing pretty good on fluid/protein intake for the day. Coughing is the only thing that really hurts still. -
How can I be stalled at 10 days post surgery
cpower100 replied to trishaz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am only 4 days post op and when I weighed myself today I was only down 4lbs from surgery day. I know it is baffling and I cannot imagine that the pounds are not just disappearing but with all that said I also feel like I need to say RELAX! Two days without a drop can not be considered a stall and instead of focusing on wrapping your head around the "lack" of weightloss you could use this time to focus on letting your body heal. Please don't set yourself up for unreasonable expectations and therefore disappointment. -
Any last minute advise? I'm pretty nervous but also very excited to get to the other side. Hoping all goes really well.

That's great news. I am still in the hospital but I can't wait to see that first drop in weight.
