Vets: What Are You Eating Today?

Since yesterday was so atypical, here's a more standard day for me: Breakfast: cup of coffee with half & half and Truvia followed by a Combat Crunch bar Lunch: 2 oz. of cheese and 1/2 ounce of honey roasted peanuts Afternoon Snack: cup of coffee & Combat Crunch bar Pre-workout Snack: chocolate Chip Peanut Crunch Clif bar Dinner: 3 oz. turkey kielbasa and mustard After dinner Snack: ice cream sundae with Halo Top ice cream, Lemonade Girl Scout cookie, and caramel syrup Bedtime Snack: coffee (with soy milk) & Combat Crunch bar That only works out to 1608 calories, so I would likely try to sneak in some extra calories somewhere between Breakfast and lunch. I try to get a minimum of 1900 a day. So the totals without some sort of high calorie morning snack come out to: Calories: 1608 Protein: 113 Carbs: 170 Fat: 72 Fiber: 52

Vets: What Are You Eating Today?

The crust is just SOOOOO filling. If I ate the crust, I could do one piece of pizza and then I wouldn't get enough Protein. So on the very rare occasions I do eat pizza (it really is rare, this pizza was leftover from two weeks ago!), it's toppings only.
  3. @@Kaishek So glad to hear you got some resolution. Hopefully things will be much easier from here on out!

    Is it normal..

My nutritionist set my goal weight, but she put much more emphasis on a target body fat percentage. I had originally wanted to lose 10 pounds more than the goal weight she set so I would be a "normal" BMI, but once I got down to her goal, I realized losing 10 more pounds would make me too skinny. I could already see my ribs! She wanted me at 165 and 25% body fat. I'm now at 158 and 21.4% body fat. Still technically "overweight" on the BMI scale, which is nuts. BMI is meaningless. Go by how you look and how you FEEL. I'm training for a half marathon, am almost "athletic" on the body fat scale, working out every single day, have visible muscles, have bones sticking out all over, and I'm still "overweight"? Ha!

Vets: What Are You Eating Today?

I am 17 months out and training for a half marathon, so my struggle right now is eating ENOUGH calories. Today is one of my rare days where I actually made it up over 2000 calories thanks to a big lunch out with coworkers (burned over 2400 though, so still not good). Breakfast: Cup of coffee with half & half and Truvia followed by a Combat Crunch bar Morning Snack: two squares from a chocolate bar Lunch: half a hamburger with pepper jack cheese & Cajun mayo (no bun), about 5 french fries, half a pickle spear Afternoon Snack: another cup of coffee and Combat crunch bar Pre-workout Snack: the rest of the chocolate bar from the morning Dinner: toppings off three leftover pieces of pizza After dinner Snack: ice cream sundae made with Halo Top ice cream, chocolate syrup, and 2 thin mint Cookies Bedtime Snack: another cup of coffee & Combat Crunch bar So, as you can see, today I ate a massive amount of food, including a lot of junkie stuff. If I hadn't burned 620 calories running today, I wouldn't have had the chocolate bar or ice cream and would have had a better dinner. Totals for today were: Calories: 2138 Protien: 116 Carbs: 178 Fat:128 Fiber: 49 Fat and carbs were way higher than normal. I usually try to be around 100 carbs and 70 grams of fat.

Protein shakes - I'm not full!

Yeah. That was really my point. Unless you NEED the carbs and extra calories because you are doing some sort of extreme fitness regime like I am right now, there really is no place in a bariatric diet for bread, Pasta, rice etc. Even when you are at goal and maintaining. We are definitely in agreement there!

    4 weeks out, stalled

Hang in there. For some people it can last a little while. Just keep doing what you need to do. I promise you the scale will move again if you stick to the program.

Protein shakes - I'm not full!

Yeah, there is just no real room for grains. I can eat stand-alone carbs sometimes, when I already have all of my protein in for the day. But carbs with a meal just make no sense. Stuff like rcie, pasta, and sandwhich rolls... there's no room to eat hose things WITH my protein and they aren't the kind of thing you'd eat alone for a snack if you've already made your protein goal. The closest I come is on my long run days for my half marathon training (when I have to run like 8+ miles straight) I will have one piece of multigrain toast with 2 whole tablespoons of peanut butter on it about a half hour before I run to give me a good boost of slow-burning carbs to fuel the run.

Protein shakes - I'm not full!

@Airstream88 @OutsideMatchInside Yeah, I'm 19 months post-op, been maintaining for 7 months, and I still don't eat fruit or bread. Just don't have the room if I'm going to get all my Protein in. That sandwich you described with the WW bread, chicken, avocado, lettuce, AND tomato? Yeah right! To get 20 grams of protein from chicken, you have to eat about 3 oz. No way am I eating 3 oz. of chicken two slices of bread (ha! just the thought is ridiculous) AND a bunch of veggies. I'll take my 3 oz. of chicken and be on my way, thanks. Today, for lunch, I had half of a hamburger patty with some pepper jack cheese on it and ate half a pickle spear. Man was I regretting that half a pickle spear in the end! Why did I eat that? I was soooooo full.
  10. I really hate how one bad apple spoils the bunch. The stories about Almanza are the reason the stereotypes against Mexican surgeons get perpetuated. There are so many fantastic surgeons in Mexico and they get a bad rap, just because of this ONE guy. Very frustrating.

    4 weeks out, stalled

Welcome to the "Dreaded Week 3 Stall". 90% of WLS patients experience a stall around the 3rd week post-op. It's just your body taking a minute to figure out what the heck is going on. Stick to your plan. Get your water. Get your protein. Take your vitamins. Move around as much as possible. The scale will start moving again,

@@kaitlynm How many calories are you eating each day. You said you tried increasing them by 500 ONE day and "gained" 3 pounds. Well it takes 10,500 calories to actually gain 3 pounds of fat, so I know it wasn't the calorie increase. It was likely sodium or carbs from whatever the source of that 500 calories was, causing you to retain Water. Anyway, it sounds like you are working out a lot. In which case you really really really do need to make sure you are getting enough calories. It's very easy to tip your body into self-preservation mode if you aren't eating enough calories to sustain your level of exercise. I wasn't even doing as much exercise as it sounds like you are and found I needed to eat 1200-1400 calories a day in my weight loss phase. Now that I'm maintaining and training for a half marathon, I have to eat 2200-2400.

Protein shakes - I'm not full!

I haven't used protein shakes since I was allowed solid foods. Since they just pass straight through my sleeve, I don't get any sensation of fullness from them. Instead I use low carb protein bars for supplemental protein, because they make me feel fuller longer. But I agree with what the others have said: dense, lean meats are the best way to stave off hunger. I usually eat 5-6 time a day, on a schedule, so I am never having to go long without eating. If I do get some occasional head hunger, I'm usually not far off from my next scheduled meal or snack anyway.
  14. If it all the patients' fault, what is he doing to attract such terrible patients? Because I haven't heard 1/10th as many horror stories about all the other TJ surgeons put together as I've heard about this guy. You'd think if it really were the patients' fault, then the other surgeons would be having similar problems with their patients.

to snack, or not to snack?

It really all boils down to what will allow you to live your life long-term. I think all of the guidelines from surgeons and nutritionists are critical in the early stages so you have a chance to heal and learn new habits. But ultimately you are going to have to make adjustments that work for you for the long haul. In a perfect world, I would get all my protein from "real" food. But this isn't a perfect world, so I still rely on Protein Bars to supplement my protein. In a perfect world, you might be able to get all your protein and only eat 3 meals a day, but your restriction doesn't allow that. So if you need to use shakes/bars between meals, then that's what you have to do. In the end, it's all about what is going to allow us to get to goal and stay there. I am eating protein bars and snacking 2-3 times a day and I have maintained below goal for almost 7 months. I've found the balance that works for me. That's what each of us need to do to be successful for the rest of our lives.

to snack, or not to snack?

If I don't snack, I can't possibly get enough calories in. A "meal" for me is usually 200-400 calories. If I don't snack, then I end up at only like 1000 calories a day. Plus I get super "hangry" if I don't eat every 3-4 hours. So I have at least two snacks a day (one in the afternoon and one after dinner). The key to successful snacking is to eat on a schedule. Don't just snack whenever you feel like it. That turns into grazing. Have a scheduled time for snacks and have a limited number of food options for those snacks. ALWAYS make sure they are high protein. Never eat carbs alone!

    Fitting in Exercise

Only you have the power to fix this. None of us can force you to move more. I can tell you what has worked for me. I work out after work every day. As soon as I walk in the door from work, I change into my workout clothes instead of my pajama. Then I head down to my basement where I workout on my treadmill, stationary bike, or do strength training. Only after that will I change into pajamas and figure out what to do about dinner, etc. Once you are into a routine, it's much easier to do, because it becomes automatic. PS: Take your vitamins! That's probably part of the reason you don't have enough energy. Why aren't you taking them?

    Mexico or US

I am considering going through dr. ariel ortiz. Did you go through bariatric pal or directly through him? Sent from my SM-N910P using the BariatricPal App I went directly through OCC. I don't believe BariatricPal is currently affiliated with him, but I could be wrong.

    Scared

You are in the really rough stretch now. You will be miserable on the pre-op diet, overwhelmed with doubt and fear, and probably some excitement mixed in. You just have to hang on for dear life and trust that you made the right decision back when you were thinking clearly. Now is the worst possible time to consider changing your mind or backing out, because now you are being emotional and irrational. You and your doctors made a well-reasoned and calculated decision. Trust in that.

    Exhausted

Are you taking B12 in a liquid or sublingual form? Off the top of my head, my thoughts are not enough protein, not enough calories, low B12, or low iron. But it's good that you are getting it checked out with your doc. They can do blood work and see if it's due to any sort of deficiency.
  21. JamieLogical

    How low should you go?

I agree. BMI is such a useless measure. I'm a woman and my body fat percentage is 21.4%.... VERY low for a woman in her mid-30's who's not an athlete. But my BMI still has me as slightly "overweight".
  22. I definitely feel more confident and willing to try new things. I started wearing dresses! I hadn't worn a dress since I was a child. And I'm training for a half marathon. Not only is that something I wouldn't have been physically capable of before, it's something I never would have even considered pushing myself to try to do. It's definitely a mental shift, as well as a physical shift. I feel strong and capable now in a way that I wouldn't have considered before. And certainly my interests have changed. Now I am much more interested in health and fitness and much less interested in the latest video games....

2 weeks post op and still hungry

My head hunger was out of control in the early days. Every single food commercial on TV had me dying. I would be like "I NEED THAT RIGHT NOW!!!" Even though, had I actually eaten it, I probably would have ended up in the hospital. It definitely took my brain a while to catch up to my physical limitations, but it did happen. You just have to hang in there and stay tough. Don't do anything that is going to jeopardize your healing.
