Losing Hope Sleeve Leak 8 mos post op

@@tlennerton I'm sorry to hear about your ordeal. Do you feel like there is light at the end of the tunnel at this point or do you anticipate more issues moving forward?
  2. Hi, I'm having my surgery at OCC on May 18th. How many days were you there ? Sent from my Nexus 5 using the BariatricPal App Typically you just spend one night in the clinic (the night after your surgery). One night in the hotel before and 1-2 nights in the hotel after.
  3. @@future Mrs 7 days seems super early for eggs! Glad you didn't have any trouble.

LUNCH VSG LIFE BEFORE & AFTER

I don't think I've eaten that much rice combined in the 20 months since I was sleeved.

Hit Goal - now how do I stop?

It's definitely messed with my head. Every time I've tracked food in the past, it's because I've been trying to lose weight. It was a real mental challenge for me to be okay with NOT having a calorie deficit once I started tracking for maintenance. I was in like full-on panic a few times.
  6. The cheapest option for shakes is to buy whey isolate powder and make your own with water, almond milk, or soy milk. You can buy flavored protein powders or unflavored and flavor you shakes with sugar-free syrups.
  7. Mashed potatoes are starchy. Try yogurt, refried beans, or cottage cheese.
  8. My nutritionist gave me guidelines for my shakes, so I'm surprised you didn't receive something like that. Here are the guidelines I was given: Minimum of 20 grams of Protein per serving Less than 8 grams of carbs with less than 2 grams of sugar, and a minimum of 3 grams of fiber Less than 3 grams of fat Less than 200 calories per serving, best at 150 Whey isolate is preferable

    Giving up the scale...

Heh! I had my surgery in Mexico too, but thankfully they had English translations of everything I had to sign and translated my surgical records into English for me to give to my PCP here in the states as well. Don't worry. I doubt that they'd have much legal recourse even if you did sign away your first born. Plus, it might give you an out if your first born ends up being a jerk!

    Approved!

May 10 is right around the corner! Time to really start getting prepared!

    Giving up the scale...

I applaud you. This early out, you should be focusing on your program, hitting your water and protein targets, healing up, and moving as much as possible. So many people get too focused on the scale and forget that they need to take care of themselves. This isn't a race, it's the rest of your life!

    Heartburn!

I would suggest calling your surgeon and asking about whether you could/should take more Prilosec.

    Emotional Eating

Curbing your emotional eating and finding other ways to cope with emotion will serve you very well post-op. One of the biggest struggles for me in the early months was figuring out how to process emotion without turning to food once it was no longer an option. It was a real challenge and I definitely could have benefited from some counseling I think.

    Heartburn!

How much Prilosec are you taking? I have to take two a day... one in the morning and one in the evening. Is your heartburn worse after eating? Are you maybe eating too fast? I notice that if I eat too much or two fast, I get heartburn-like symptoms still.

    Happy One Year Surgiversary

I need to splurge for that. My current one doesn't expire for another four years. At least it's not as bad as my passport photo.....

    8 days out ! Cravings galore !

As people are fond of saying on these forums, "we have surgery on our stomachs, not our brains." So much of what we think of as "hunger", is just cravings. Or acid... a lot of people on here think they are "hungry" post-op because their new stomachs are grumbling and growling. But that's just the churning of excess stomach acid or gas. My husband's doctor always said "if you're not hungry enough to eat an apple, you're not really hungry." If you are truly, physically hungry, healthy foods will satisfy that hunger. If you "need" junky foods, that's head hunger or cravings.

Hit Goal - now how do I stop?

Lean protein is super filling and not at all calorie-dense, so it doesn't help in this case at all. I agree that you want to try to get the extra calories from healthier foods where possible, not from just added sugars and saturated fats, but I have definitely had to resort to a lot more "healthy fats" and carbs.
  18. Picked up my race packet with my race bib and t-shirt for Sunday's half marathon. This is getting pretty real!

@WLSResources/ClothingExch I actually weigh just about the same as I did for my last 5K this past August, since that was just before my one year surgiversary and around the time I reached goal. But I will definitely be appreciating how far my fitness has come since then. Struggling through a 5K versus running a half marathon is a big difference!

My arithmetic and profile-reading were off, but I think you get my meaning. (Also was just reminded that you're in Rochester, not down here as I suggested elsewhere the other day. Mea culpa. I should have recalled, as I flew up to Rochester three or four times a year for several years to spend time with friends in Canandaigua and took many rides to your fair city to see the sights.) Have a great time at the race. You'll shine.

    3 days since surgery

Walking helps with the gas pain too. Its so counter-intuitive, because when you are miserable, the last thing you want to do is get up and move around. But it really does help!

    LASTNIGHT DINNER VSG LIFE

I have learned to accept the food waste. It was a challenge in the beginning. I would get "to go" boxes when I ate outjust so the server wouldn't think I didn't like the food. But when my fridge started stinking with all the leftovers I could never catch up on, I finally let it go.

    8 days out ! Cravings galore !

The head hunger is completely insane. I was watching commercials in my hotel room the day after surgery and every food commercial was like "I NEED THAT RIGHT NOW!" even though I knew that if I actually ate that, I would end up in the hospital. It's crazy. It takes a long time for your head to catch onto the fact that your stomach can't handle that stuff anymore. It was a real challenge for me all the way through probably month 4 or so? Then I *finally* started figuring out ways of dealing with emotions and cravings besides turning to food.

    Confused ?

It really all depends on your insurance and what hoops they make you jump through. Not all insurance companies require a bunch of pre-op steps. Some require a ton. As for the recovery, that sounds incredibly optimistic to me! I know of people with desk jobs that returned in a week, but I wouldn't recommend it. I have a desk job and returned 15 days post-op and I was so exhausted in the beginning that I just went to bed as soon as I got home from work. Didn't really turn a corner there until I was on soft foods. So maybe if your surgeon moves you through the food stages faster than mine did, you will have more energy?
  24. I have my FitBit goal set to the default of 10,000 per day. But it really depends on what my work-out is for the day. On my bike or strength training days, I only get around 6,000. On my running days I get 20,000+.
  25. @@Reena 4/05/16 Glad you are feeling better! Yeah it's a real challenge to chew thoroughly and east SUPER slowly. The good news is, that's only temporary. Once you are all healed up, you'll be able to eat more normally. I remember the day I had my first protein bar at maybe a month and a half out. It took me almost a full hour and I finally just gave up with about 2-3 bites of it left. Now, at 20 months out, I can eat a whole protein bar in 5-10 minutes no problem!
