What size sleeve did your surgeon use?

According to my surgical report, they used a 32 French Bougie.

    It's getting real!

You should contact your insurance company to see if they would cover any potential post-operative issues. I contacted mine and while they would not cover my WLS, they did assure me that they would cover an infection or hospital visits necessary after the surgery and my PCP told me she would order and monitor my bloodwork to track all my vitamin/mineral levels.

    It's getting real!

I think I remember the thread you are referring to. I read that whole thing and it seemed to only indict one surgeon, Dr. Kelly. Like I said, it's not fair to judge an entire nation of doctors on the malpractice of one or two. There are many many many thousands of people who have traveled to Mexico for bariatric surgery and had zero complications and tremendous success. Of course, there's risk associated with any surgery no matter where you have it performed or by whom. It's up to you to judge whether the potential benefits outweigh the risks, but I would make sure I am accurately measuring those risks before weighing them against the benefits.

    It's getting real!

Where did you find these stories. I did pretty exhaustive research and only found one or two doctors with any significant history of taking shortcuts that led to problems years out. My surgeon has been doing surgeries for years and years and I've yet to hear of any complications arising further down the road. Just like in the US, there are good surgeons and bad surgeons. You need to do your research on specific surgeons, not just lump them all into one category because they are in Mexico.

    Energy come find me!

Then I guess you've answered your own question. Doing 2.5 miles in one go is too much for you right now considering your calorie intake and where you are at in your recovery. The only way you are going to see a boost in energy to the point where you can comfortably do that level of activity is to take in more calories and Protein and allow yourself to fully recover from the major surgery you had only 10 days ago.

    It's getting real!

Are you open to the possibility of going to Mexico for surgery. There are many great surgeons there who do VSG for well under $10,500. My surgeon is on the upper end of the price scale in Mexico and still cost less than 2/3 that amount.

    Need some experienced weight losers

I was a total emotional eater/binge eater too. Any time I felt like I HAD to loose weight, it seemed like I just ate more out of resentment. I went to Mexico for surgery and here's the thing. Once you have the surgery, you really have no choice but to change your relationship with food. Can you still fail? Probably. But, the restriction and recovery in the beginning make eating too much food or the wrong food physically impossible. So far I haven't even been tempted to try to eat things I shouldn't eat yet. Even when I take one extra bite of the foods I'm allowed to be eating, I end up immediately regretting it. I am hopeful that by the time I am recovered enough to be able to handle eating more than I should or eating the wrong types of foods, this time without binging and indulging will have broken me of the habit. They say it only takes 21 days to break a habit or for new ones and I am now almost 6 wees post-op. Will I face demons down the road? Probably. But I know I will never ever again be able to eat an entire large pizza in one sitting, so that's already a huge improvement over my old behavior.

1 week post op protein intake issue

I don't think I was getting 60 grams a day as early as 1 week post op, but I was drinking protein shakes to meet my requirements once I was allowed them. It wasn't until I was able to do purees, scrambled eggs, and cottage cheese that I was able to get enough protein from food to cut out one of my shakes. Now I am almost 6 weeks post-op and I still have to rely on two shakes a day to help me get my 85-100 grams in.

    Pain

If I eat too much or too fast I definitely feel some pain. It feels like constriction in my esophagus, right in the middle of my chest. I'll be 6 weeks post-op on Monday.

    Clothing Sizes

I haven't dropped any sizes with my sleeve, but I had lost 90 pounds a few years ago and I learned that thrift stores and clearance racks were my friends. As I was losing weight, I did NOT want to be spending $50-60 on a pair of pants I would only wear for 2 months tops. That's my plan this time as well, assuming I ever actually drop a size....

    100lbs down

Holy crap, you are looking super hot now! Where are you planning to lose 30 more pounds from? Just amazing!
  12. What kinds of things have you had to eat so far? You are a month out, which means you are only a week or two behind me, so I assume you can have mushies and purees at this point? I was (still am really) having a lot of soft cheeses, scrambled eggs, greek yogurt, Peanut Butter, tuna salad (made with flavored sandwhich spreads), Wendy's chili (once i was allowed ground meats and legumes), hummus on half a whole grain mini pita (once i was allowed soft whole grains), and, of course, Protein shakes at a month out.

    Clothing Sizes

I have lost 41 pounds since I started my ore-op weight loss and I am still in the same size pants. But back in July, I was SQUEEZING into pants that were literally bursting at the seams (one of the rows of stitches had come out of the butt of my brown pants) and now they are hanging pretty loose on me. They still aren't falling-off/pull-them-down-without-unbuttoning big, but they are rather loose. I am hoping to get by with skipping a size (these are size 20) and go straight into 16s at some point in the near future.
  14. I haven't had this issue permanently, but I HAVE read accounts on these forums of people whose tastes changed right out of surgery, but did go back to normal eventually. So don't give up hope just yet. It may not be a permanent change for you. And even if it is, I think it's a matter of figuring out which things taste good to you now. Hopefully not everything will taste horrible!

    Energy come find me!

I'm shocked you are allowed to exercise only 9 days out. I wasn't supposed to start exercising with 60-90 minutes of "brisk walking" until Day 21. I was only allowed to do slow, brief bouts of walking prior to that. And I'm not allowed to do any more intense exercise than "brisk walking" until 2 months out.

    Lose your teeth?

I have heard of it with gastric bypass, but not with sleeve. With malabsorbative procedures (gastric bypass, or duodenal switch) it is possible to have serious issues absorbing vital nutrients and minerals. All bariatric patients should be on supplements for life, but it's even more critical with these malabsorbative procedures and even then there can be more issues with getting all the nutrients you need as compared to VSG or lap-band.

    Day 10 Post Op Question

I lost 7 pounds my first week post-op but only 0.4 pounds the second week. I've had "slow" but steady loss since then. I lose 3.8 pounds the second week and about 2.5 pounds per week the last couple of weeks. Some people have huge losses right out of the gate. That hasn't been the case with me, but I AM losing and I've talked to my nutritionist about what I'm eating and how much exercise I'm doing and she has reassured me to just keep doing what I'm doing.

    Energy come find me!

Definitely have a carb-y snack before your workout. Fruit or whole grains if you are allowed to have those yet. I usually do a half a whole grain mini pita with some hummus or Peanut Butter or part of an apple with some peanut butter. And make sure you follow your workout with a high Protein snack/meal within 2 hours. How many calories are you eating? I'm doing 60 minutes of "brisk walking" per day right now, which burns over 500 calories according to my heart rate monitor, so I've been trying to eat at LEAST 800 calories a day, usually more like 900. If you are only eating like 600 calories a day and burning 500+ through exercise, you are essentially anorexic (Anorexia Athletica), which of course means you will be tired! You need to eat enough calories to sustain your level of activity.

    Lose your teeth?

The only reason you would lose your teeth would be not taking your supplements. Make sure you take the required amount of vitamins and minerals every day and you'll be fine.

Dr. Ariel Ortiz at the OCC

I took all of my meds (still on the antacid for three more weeks). I am a stickler for following instructions. Always have been a rule abider and a "goody two-shoes" or whatever. So I always do things by the book. I didn't experience any nausea past the first day post-op, but stayed on the anti-nausea pill until it ran out. Didn't know whether it was the reason I wasn't experiencing nausea in the first place, so I didn't want to take the chance! I take the antacid every day still and plan to just buy some Prilosec OTC when it runs out, in case I start having any issues with acid. As for water, just keep a water bottle with you at all times and take little sips all the time. They initially wanted us drinking 1 oz. every 15 minutes, which would have been one cup every two hours. Well, if you do the math, that means it would take 16 hours to get in 64 oz. and I don't know about anyone else, but I was not awake 16 hours a day in those early days! So drink drink drink what you can when you can. Marching in place really helped for me.

    WHO BROKE MY SCALE!?

This is the post I needed right now. Seeing everyone else complaining about their disappointment and frustration over losing about twice as much weight as I have in the same amount of time has made me want to jump off a bridge.

I carry most of my weight in my hips and thighs, so I definitely foresee a thigh lift in my future.
