    Plastics in 13 days!

I've been to MX twice for surgery. Once for plastics and once for my VSG. Both experiences were very positive. Post-plastics I didn't actually get out much to see or do anything because I was soooooooo incapacitated. Late in my two week stay, two of my nurses did take me to the beach one day just to walk along the boardwalk and that was really nice. After my VSG, I was much more mobile and able to get out and do a little, but I was only there for 2 days post-op. The most I did was walk around in the area of my hotel and visit a corner store for some Vitamin Water. In general though, I would say that all of the people were extraordinarily friendly and helpful. I felt very comfortable and safe the entire time. I was shocked how much it's exactly like being in the US in terms of the stores and restaurants that you see while driving around. I did try to tip well while I was there, because it was clear to me that everyone was working very hard and doing an excellent job.

    Forum Recommendations?

I spent a lot of time in the "POST-Operation Gastric Sleeve Surgery Questions & Answers" forum in my early days post-op.

    Help

That's great news! Glad to know your tool can still work for you even after a major set-back like that.

    Question before surgery ?

I lost about 11 pounds on my 2-week liquid diet. I had been dieting and exercising before that, so I didn't have the big drop in "water weight" that a lot of people have right at first coming off a super high calorie/carb diet.

    Loathing protein!

I'm with Babb's on this one. Grains were a LOOOOOONG way off for me. I still haven't had rice and I'm 11.5 months post-op! I've had Pasta made out of red lentils, but no regular pasta. I have had bread a few times and some tortilla chips and parts of tortillas for wraps, but never more than a tiny bit. I wasn't allowed solids until 40 days post-op and I just hung in there. I loved the Baked Ricotta recipe from this site: http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html And I would make this dish with one scrambled egg, some Mexican cheese blend melted on top and a little taco sauce. That was always a nice little treat.

    24 hours post op

Everyone's experience is different, so no one can tell you how long your discomfort will last. What does your surgeon say? Barring any complications, you should feel a little bit better day-by-day. 24 hours is still pretty early out and your body has experienced a lot of trauma. I know for me, each day was significantly easier than the last in those first few days.
  12. Everyone's post-op experience is different. Some people experience a great deal of swelling that makes even a tiny sip of water "filling". Some people have no problem chugging water straight out of the gate. Plus, there is a strong posibility of temporary nerve damage during surgery, so you should NOT be relying on any sort of "full" feeling right now. You should be measuring your food and eating on a timer.

Ladies, What Size Jeans Do You Wear?

I feel ya on the large calves, i last measured at 18" and there is almost no fat on them. I inherited them from my mother. It's one thing i actually not expecting to change much, but if they did, it would be nice to fit into normal knee-high boots for once. You think that's big?!?! You're 5'8" and 272. I'm 5'6" and 167 and my calves are 16.75" still!

    Why no NSAIDS ?

Even my surgeon said he runs into this with other docs. He had someone post-op, out of town, at an emergency room and spent a great deal of time on the phone trying to educate the doc who wouldn't prescribe narcotics. I don't know what the solution is other than seeing if you can get your surgeon to advocate for you with your other docs. That is what I was going to suggest. Try putting your surgeon in touch with you other doctors so they can fight it out amongst themselves.

    Self Sabotage

I loved water pre-op too and could drink it at any temperature. Post-op I found room temperature water to be too "filling". It sits heavier in my stomach somehow. So I switched to ice cold water all the time and it made it a lot easier for me. I can also do hot beverages with no issues. It's just that room temp water that doesn't work well for me anymore.

    Miss my straw ...

I try to avoid straws stills, but I have mindless drunk through a straw several times at restaurants where they bring your water with a straw already in it and have had no ill effects.

    Self Sabotage

Have you tried experimenting with different water temperatures? I had a hard time getting my water in too, until I realized that the easiest thing for me to drink is ICE COLD water. I bought a double-walled thermos style bottle that keeps my ice frozen all day long at work. I fill it first thing in the morning with ice and water from my fridge at home. Then again partway through the morning with water from a drinking fountain (ice is still there from the morning) and then partway through the afternoon from the drinking fountain again. I do MUCH better with the ice water than I was doing with just my plastic water bottle before. Even though the plastic bottle started with cold water in the morning, it quickly got to room temperature and I slowed down a LOT on my drinking.

    Why no NSAIDS ?

NSAIDS are very tough on your stomach. They can cause ulcers and stomach bleeds even in a normal stomach. Post WLS, your stomach is much more delicate than it was pre-op and the risks of long-term NSAID use become too high. Here's a snippet from WebMD about the stomach-damaging effects of NSAIDS. Remember, these comments are for people with NORMAL stomachs. So imagine how much worse it could be post-WLS.

    Tummy tuck before sleeve

Yeah, I regained 80 pounds after my tummy tuck and my stomach stayed flat through it all. It looks amazing now that I'm down to 12 pounds less than when I had the tummy tuck in the first place. If you look at the before pics in my gallery, you can see how flat my stomach was even when I was back up to 240+ pounds. You and I have very similar height, starting weight and goals - also the tummy tuck! You have done great - hope I will do similar. I'll be posting new progress pics after my 1 year surgiversary on Sept. 1st. Hoping to be at goal by then, but these last 4 pounds are being very stubborn!

  21. Well, my sleeve was actually my second surgery in Mexico, so convincing my loved ones this time around was a lot easier. Four years ago, I had plastics in Mexico and that was a little tougher sell. The good news is that my family all know how analytical and logical I am and once I explained that I had done my research and due diligence in choosing a surgeon and spoken to MANY other people who have successful surgeries in Mexico, the trusted my judgement and that I had made a sound decision. It's definitely the sort of thing that when you just mention it to someone, their first reaction is shock and horror. But if you explain it to them rationally and that you were thorough in your research, hopefully they can get past their gut reaction.

    Tummy tuck before sleeve

I had my sleeve after a tummy tuck and I was worried about damage to mu muscle repair. It was one of my first questions to the surgeon. But he explained how with laproscopic surgery they don't actually cut through the muscle, just go in between the fibers and I had no issues. Was able to get back to core strength training very quickly. And the pain from VSG was NOTHING compared to the pain from my tummy tuck with muscle repair!
  23. It really is a travesty that some people get so little information from their surgical teams about post-op diet and activity. I personally would take it upon myself to research that stuff if I hadn't been given it, but I know a lot of people won't do that.
  24. The answer is, you may not know when you are full, which is why you should weigh and measure your food for this first little while here. Otherwise you risk eating too much or not enough. For me, I felt VERY full very quickly when I moved onto solids, but some people have temporary damage to their nerves post-op and don't experience that feeling.

    Infection

I don't know that you need to worry more than you already should be. Just keep an eye out for any sign of infection around your incisions, which you should be doing anyway. Redness.... warm to the touch.....
