Agreed. Especially if it's not iceberg. I have to be honest, I get a little tired around here of hearing people dismiss lettuce (and other leafy vegetables) as a useless waste of space and acting like it's some kind of junk food. I eat salads pretty regularly (I'm 7 months out), though now I load them with Protein, and I usually go for ones made with mixed greens and spinach. I guess I could eat nothing at all but protein like some people claim to do, but I would prefer to be able to have regular bowel movements. I'm just silly like that, I guess. I don't eat lettuce and I have a BM every day.... Anyway, back to the topic at hand, I have trouble with any raw vegetables post-op. I am 16 months out and they still cause me to have super uncomfortable gas and burping. Cooked veggies I can handle just fine.

Sisters's "Concerned" Speech! LOL
JamieLogical replied to Proud2BMe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This definitely seems common in people who know us and see us every day. They have an image of us in their heads and when what we now look like is 100+ pounds lighter than that image, they think it's "too skinny". I have had to tell SO MANY PEOPLE so many times that I am still technically "overweight". I am not "wasting away". I am not on death's door. I am not going to starve to death. I'm not anorexic and risking my health. I'm still OVERWEIGHT! -
I am a gastric sleeve failure
JamieLogical replied to scliftonw's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree with everything @@Inner Surfer Girl said. You need to go back to the basics and see if there is any chance that you can make the tool you have work for you. If it can't then you need to evaluate why that is and whether or not the results with RNY will be any different. -
What's the longest period of time you were "stalled" ?
JamieLogical replied to Susan66's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
2 days of no change on the scale is not a "stall". I know, right. I read that post and I was like WTF?!?!? -
Buying my ticket today! Where to sit?
JamieLogical replied to RellaBelle's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Aisle for the trip home. You should get up and walk often after your surgery to avoid blood clots. That will be MUCH easier to do with an aisle seat. -
Effect of vitamins on rate of weight loss
JamieLogical replied to shriner37's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You should almost definitely take Vitamin D. The majority of Americans are deficient, even without WLS. -
We’re approaching post number…4 million!
JamieLogical replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That's pretty cool! It's overwhelming to think how much good this site has done for the WLS community. I can't IMAGINE going through this whole process without the information, resources, and support I've found here. Thank you so much for creating this site and continuing to grow and improve it over the years. So many of us would have been lost without it. Not many web sites can be credited for actually saving lives, but I think this one has probably saved thousands of lives and drastically improved thousands more. Thank you, Alex! -
What's the longest period of time you were "stalled" ?
JamieLogical replied to Susan66's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Going back through my spreadsheet from my weight loss phase, it looks like the longest stall I had was 5 weeks at about 7 months post-op. To be fair though, that stall was at a weight I had been at for well over a year a couple of years back and I have read that your body has "set points" where it "remembers" having been at a specific weight for a long time and when you get to that weight, it tries to stay there for a while. -
The bun is what's really throwing me off here. I hope the OP posts back to clarify whether he's eating the bun or not. At four months I was just starting to experiment with eating any kind of bread. I would eat open-face egg "sandwiches" with a tiny little 3 inch square piece of wheat toast and I still couldn't eat the full piece of toast.

Are you eating the bun? I'm 16 months out and if I ate a slider with the bun, no way I'd have room for any fries, much less a dozen!

What’s Your Attitude Towards Carbs?
JamieLogical replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
Sorry. That did come across pretty harsh now that I look back at it. I was just shocked that anyone on these forums wouldn't have that basic knowledge, since presumably we've all been on diets in the past, talked to nutritionists, etc. -
Gastric bypass versus sleeve for the 300+
JamieLogical replied to Phynale's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I don't think anyone on these forums can answer this question for you. We all made out choice based on our OWN priorities and criteria. It's tough to put ourselves in someone else's shoes (especially with so little knowledge about that person). Both bypass and sleeve are excellent options with the potential for success. So much of the outcome will depend on YOU and how you use whichever tool you are given. People with bypass do tend to lose weight more quickly, but not necessarily more weight overall. Here are some of MY reasons for choosing sleeve, but they may not be YOUR reasons. Terrified to have my plumbing all rerouted and the additional risks associated with that. Didn't want to lose the use of my pyloric valve. Worried about the idea of my old stomach still just sitting inside of me where it could potentially develop ulcers or cancer and not be accessible with a simple endoscopy. Malabsorption is permanent. It may help you lose weight more quickly in the beginning, but it doesn't magically go away at goal. That might make it harder to STOP losing weight and means life-long risk of Vitamin deficiencies. Dumping syndrome. On the one hand, this sounds like great aversion therapy to keep me from eating sugary foods, but on the other, I wanted to ultimately be able to eat any food I wanted. Plus, there are no guarantees patients will even experience dumping syndrome in the first place. With sleeve, I felt like I could ultimately lead a more "normal" life. While I still have to be on Vitamins forever and focus on "Protein first", I can eat anything at all (just not much of it). Plus there aren't so many risks of complications years down the road and no special precautions that need to be take with future medical procedures or medications. -
Weight Loss and what to expect
JamieLogical replied to Caela88's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's really hard to tell for sure, especially since you are a revision and that may effect the size and shape of your sleeve. I have read that a lot of revisions from lap-band have scar tissue in their stomachs that their surgeons have to work around. The good news is, a LOT of the outcome of your surgery is in your control! If you stick to the plan, get your water, get your protein, get your vitamins, and exercise regularly, then you'll lose the weight. The sleeve is just a tool, remember. It's up to you how you use that tool to achieve success. -
I think the best thing to do right now would to try to become more active. Even if it's just short walks in the beginning. Anything you do to make your body stronger will only help in your recovery post-op. Plus you will need to be walking and moving a lot post-op and for the rest of your life in order to lose weight and maintain, so it's a good habit to start forming now. Another good idea might be to start using a food tracking app like SparkPeople or MyFitnessPal. That will give you a sense of what you are eating now and you can familiarize yourself with the apps, so you can use them to track post-op. A lot of people find food tracking apps useful early on post-op to make sure they are getting in enough Protein and not too many carbs. Some people even use them for years post-op!

Effect of vitamins on rate of weight loss
JamieLogical replied to shriner37's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think it may have just been a coincidence. The stress and events that led you to run out of Vitamins could also have caused you to stall out. Once things calmed down you were able to buy more vitamins AND you got back into a routine. That being said, I still think it is ABSOLUTELY VITAL to keep up with your vitamins. There is a lot more at stake here than just your weight loss. Vitamin deficiencies are serious business and can lead to long lasting health problems, even once the deficiencies are addressed. -
What’s Your Attitude Towards Carbs?
JamieLogical replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
I'm interested in your last 2 sentences. How did you discover that? It will be very helpful to me in designing my daily meal plan. Hope you aren't referring to the protein and carbs have 4 calories per gram and fat has 9 calories per gram. That's just common scientific knowledge. Everyone who has ever been on a diet knows that much at least! -
when do you feel normal eating again (small portions still)?
JamieLogical replied to denisa's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Some people's plans allow them to eat oatmeal, since it is a whole grain or "healthy carb". Most people I've seen on here mix in some unflavored protein powder. I personally haven't eaten oatmeal post-op and don't intend to. But ultimately everyone needs to figure out what works or them. Recommendations from surgeons and nutritionists are all well and good, but only YOU have to be able to live the rest of your life. -
Fruitcake (Yes You Read Right!)

@@BigViffer One time my girlfriend's mom tried to force me to eat peas and I threw up right there at the table. So I totally get where you are coming from with your aversion to green beans. I haven't tried any peas since my surgery.... maybe I should give them a shot? -

Husband not supportive
JamieLogical replied to christina Abdo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
My husband was not supportive of my decision to have surgery. He insisted that I didn't "need" it. But once I did it, he was great about it post-op. At that point it was done and there was no dissuading me, so he just had to kind of go along with it after that! -
Your surgeon or coordinator might be able to recommend someone. Many bariatric centers are associated or affiliated with plastic surgeons. I've had plastics in Mexico, but I don't know what my surgeon's experience with fillers was, as I was there for completely different procedures. If you want to look her up, her name is Dra. Laura Carmina Cardenas.

What’s Your Attitude Towards Carbs?
JamieLogical replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Food and Nutrition
I don't avoid carbs, I just find that by putting protein first, I end up eating relatively few carbs. At a meal, I will rarely "waste" room on things like rice or pasta or bread. For a snack, I will sometimes incorporate some carbs, like wheat toast with peanut butter. But my nutritionist told me to NEVER eat a carb-only snack or meal. -
They will be. It really does get markedly better on a daily basis. Just have to tough it out these first few weeks and you will be feeling much better. Then a few months out you will be feeling WAY better than that even. Hang in there.
