  1. I think it largely depends on whether you have complications or not, but without complications I could have returned to work after my sleeve-RYN conversion after five days. I was very tired at that point, but my pain was mostly under control with the exception of gas pain which I experienced rather intensely from around days 5-12. I would recommend walking as much as possible (you probably know that) but if it makes you feel better I felt like my recovery from bypass was a breeze compared to the sleeve. It's all individual, but I hope things go smoothly for you!

    Same weight for 7 days

Totally normal! You're experiencing the dreaded three week stall. I had bypass on 9/1 and am going through the same thing. Our bodies just need a chance to catch up. And as many people will tell you, you are likely still losing fat and going down in clothing sizes even if the scale is stuck. Hang in there! We just have to stick to our plans

    Pain around incision

Everyone heals differently, but I'd call your surgeon's office. My incisions were mostly healed by two weeks but that's just me. I hope you feel better!

    Help!

Once you are on full liquids/your doctor clears it, maybe try no sugar added pudding? I get cravings for sweets and that has helped me to keep it at bay. Also, when you are so soon out from surgery you can remind yourself that serious damage can happen by "falling off the wagon." That thought helped me to stay on track. Try visualizing the staple lines etc. It can get really scary if you stray too far off the path. That being said, you are a human being going through a drastic change. Be kind to yourself!

    Expect the unexpected lol

After my sleeve water tasted different! It went away after a while, but it was such a weird sensation.

Revision from sleeve to Rny bc of gerd

We had surgery on the same day for the same reason! It's such a relief not having the GERD! Did you struggle with regain after the sleeve, or were you at goal weight for your revision? I was at goal and I got so many comments from nurses, etc. on my size at surgery time! Such a weird experience.
  7. I had lots of anxiety pre surgery (all of them really), and in my case I asked my doctor to prescribe me some anxiety medication. It sounds like you are traveling pre-surgery so that might be an option, but at least know that 1) it's totally normal to be anxious and 2) they put anti-anxiety medication in your IV before wheeling you back which helps tremendously in those last minutes before the operation. Aside from medication, I would recommend downloading some guided meditation, practicing some anti-anxiety breathing exercises (you can find them on Google), and talking it out with friends and family. The statistics are on your side, so try to enjoy the rest of your trip! Good luck!

    Bruising after procedure

Like others mentioned, probably from blood thinners (assuming they gave you some). I had a massive arm bruise and asked the nurse about it and she said they gave me my first round of blood thinners while I was still under, so you might not have even realized that's what happened! Hopefully the bruising goes down soon!
  9. I was reluctant to respond because I don't think my experience is typical or common, but since I just went through this whole thing I figure I might as well share. I had sleeve surgery three years ago and developed really bad acid reflux afterwards (didn't have it before). Many people's stomachs adjust after surgery and start producing less acid, but mine didn't and it led to lots of unpleasant symptoms including vomiting. I ended up revising my sleeve to gastric bypass two weeks ago, and besides the usual recovery woes I am much happier now. I don't think such drastic measures are usually necessary, but I tried everything for a couple of years before finally deciding it was the right choice for me. There are lots of medications, diet changes, etc. that can help, so hang in there and see what happens as you move further away from surgery. Almost everyone has it in the early stages! Good luck!

Please help...need reality check! Slipping up!

I have no idea if this will be a helpful comment or not, but I have found that transferring my fixation on cravings to (for me) drinking as much tea and liquid as possible has really cut down on my desire to eat. I've made the tea thing sort of fun for myself by getting some nicer loose leaf teas and herbal blends, and a couple of fun tea gadgets (steepers and mugs). Obviously defeating cravings is really challenging but this has worked for me now and in the past and it certainly helps weight loss to focus on fluid intake. I have to remind myself that the fat only has so many ways out of my body and the primary one is by peeing! Like others said, don't give up or be too hard on yourself. There's a reason we think of this process as a journey. Good luck!
  11. You have such a great attitude! I am so sorry you are going through this and am glad you seem to finally be getting some answers. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

    Migraine and vomiting

I haven't had that exact experience but I am two weeks post op and have thrown up twice from a medication that I take. It felt horrible and also like I did some kind of damage to my stomach, but my doctor assures me it's fine. If you are worried or start experiencing other symptoms I would just give your surgeon a call and see what he or she says. Good luck and I am sorry you are going through this!

    Worried

I'm 15 days post op gastric bypass...I would encourage you to check in with your surgeon to see if what you are experiencing is normal. Everyone is different and so you will find a variety of responses here, but for any concerning symptoms so soon after surgery I'd say talk to your doctor. I've experienced a lot of fatigue up until this point, but not joint pain. That being said, I'm a revision and so my experience might not apply to you. Good luck, and I really hope you feel better! WLS is quite the journey!

Revision from sleeve to Rny bc of gerd

I actually ended up having surgery on September 1st- it went really well! I lost around 100 pounds with the sleeve and am a normal BMI. My revision was solely for GERD and vomiting.
  15. Hey there! I was just wondering how soon after surgery people were able to do yoga? I haven't received great guidance on exercise from my surgeon (will be following up tomorrow) but in the meantime was wondering what people thought. If not yoga, when did you get back into exercise (besides walking)? Thanks!

    False scale readings?

Our weight fluctuates daily based on a number of factors (water intake, where you are in your menstrual cycle, how much water your body is retaining on any given day, bowel movements etc). I would pretty confidently say that the scale isn't giving you false readings and is instead just demonstrating that our weight is more than how much body fat we have. As many suggest on this site, either weigh less often so you can get a better sense of whether things are generally moving downwards, or learn more about the factors that cause weight gain or loss and become more comfortable with daily fluctuation. I weigh daily and don't get discouraged anymore by day to day fluctuation. Hope that helps, and good luck!
  17. I had surgery in 2014 and then a revision on 9/1 of this year. I have noticed that the site has changed considerably between my first surgery and my second (more trolls/fighting) but I think it's still a very valuable source of information and support if you can look past it. I agree with @OutsideMatchInside that this is just part of the nature of the internet, and you have to take advice from strangers on the internet with a grain of salt. There are lots of nice people on here though, and I would encourage you to reach out to individual posters for advice and support. Good luck!

Gastric Bypass at 150lbs...An Unexpected Journey!

Everything went really well! I am feeling pretty good for being 5 days out and am managing pain, walking, and fluids. Good luck to everyone else!
  19. Well, I am officially going in to have my sleeve converted to a gastric bypass this Friday, September 1st. I am 5'5" and 150 pounds and never thought I'd be starting the Bariatric process over again after having the sleeve surgery three years ago, but here I am! For the past couple of years I have struggled with severe GERD, regularly throwing up both food and water which has made life really challenging. I am thankful that my surgery is happening because of complications and not regain (my biggest fear!), but I am admittedly overwhelmed and anxious about the possibility of further complications. Luckily I wholeheartedly trust my surgeon and team and am in good hands, but it is a daunting position to be in. I have taken comfort in these forums for years now, and am sure I'll be visiting more often as I recover. Thank you for being such a positive group of people and an extended internet family to all of us going through tough times. And good luck to everyone going through this process no matter what the reason. This isn't an easy path, but it is one that has given me some of the most joyful experiences in my life, and given me the confidence to welcome friends and partners to become involved in my journey in ways I didn't think were positive.

    Must-haves for the hospital?

I brought my own robe for walking and also dry shampoo because my hair gets really gross really fast. I spent two nights and on the third morning I did actually shower and was glad I had a small thing of soap and shampoo.

    September Bypass Buddies

Hi!! Thanks for checking! My surgery went way better than I could have hoped for. I woke up joking with the nurses and was up and out of bed the first day. I haven't had any trouble with water or fluids (protein shakes are a little harder) and I just came home after a two night stay yesterday afternoon. I had a bit of an unusual situation with the pain medicine where I have Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction as a side effect of having my gallbladder removed, and so they did some really creative thinking with my anesthesia- I had a Ketamine infusion during the surgery and then lots of local anaesthetic to keep the incision pain down. I did end of taking one narcotic that didn't give me any trouble, and so it's been a pretty smooth few days. Today I'm going to do more walking, sipping, and protein shakes. Good luck to everyone with impending surgery dates! I'm thinking about you all!

Sleeve to Bypass, will I go back to classes?

I am having a sleeve to bypass revision on Friday and lost a battle with my insurance company due to a company policy exclusion. That being said, had insurance approved I would not have had to do the classes according to my surgeon. I have maintained my weight loss since my original surgery and she made it sound like that was the reason. I think if regain is the reason for revision, even if you have GERD, they expect you to do classes. Not sure if that helps or not but that's my understanding.

    I regret this surgery

Everyone has moments/days/weeks where everything is painful and difficult both physically and emotionally. I promise you you will feel different in the coming months. Three weeks isn't long enough to truly enjoy the benefits of weight loss, and everyone is right that you will be able to eat what you want (doesn't mean you should necessarily) at about a year out. I've maintained my 100 pound weight loss and have eaten all of my favorite foods at times, but always in moderation because the sleeve gave me that tool. It is a hard place to be in right now, but you can do this. And if it helps to move into acceptance, there's no turning back now! I wish you luck and keep seeking support on this site. It's a lifesaver. Also, ignores the haters! We all are human.

    September Bypass Buddies

I am scheduled for Bypass on September 1st! Currently doing a week long liquid diet despite having lost 100 pounds from my original sleeve surgery and weighing 150 at 5'5". Not sure what the logic is but at least it's helping me prepare for post-op. Good luck everyone! Let me know if anyone else is on the 1st!

    ERCP after RNY - questions

I have Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction which causes severe pain in the Upper Right Quadrant due to increased bile duct pressure during attacks. It's worth looking into for people who had their gallbladders out but still experience severe abdominal pain. For me, attacks happen when taking any kind of narcotic pain medicine.
