1 week post op....don't know what I'm doing

My surgeoun/NUT said no protein in the first week. Just clear liquids. I don't start protein until week 2. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using the BariatricPal App That is completely opposite from what my surgeon required. We need protein to heal. ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates and Isopure are both clear protein supplements. You can also drink bone broth which is clear and had protein. I was given the ProtiDiet while I was still in the hospital.

    Anyone from Kentucky?

I was sleeved April 20, 2015 by Dr. Weiss at Georgetown. I live in Danville. Welcome!
  3. Adding: I used to love it at the Y when runners would grudgingly come to our Water aerobics class because an injury kept them from running. It usually took less than 15 minutes to realize that water exercise is intense. It was also great to see the 90 year old ladies KICK THEIR BUTTS. P.S., had your surgeon never seen Michael Phelps' body?
  4. Wow, what an idiot. Something tells me he has never taken a water class. I have lost over 200 pounds so far and 99% of my exercise is in the water.

Can a Icee stretch your pouch

I agree. Plus, they may have even made the ice with sugar Water is a super sneaky way to add extra sugar.

    Can't use CPAP after surgery

Scarves don't work (I've tried). I recommend if you need something in a pinch, try knee high hose. (Based on experience). I doubt you need a prescription for a chin strap. I've bought one online before. Your med supply should also have one.

Great! My 100 gram protein target is what my surgeon set for me. Yours may be different. My surgeon's guidelines are: 100 grams for all men and anyone with a starting BMI over 50. Everyone else (basically women with a starting BMI under 50): 80 grams. You may see lower targets, but in my observation, the higher targets work well. Some folks who have lower targets seem to struggle more.

    Can't use CPAP after surgery

Yes, I made an appointment with my sleep Doctor within a month of having surgery. He switched me from my bipap to a CPAP that is automatically adjustable. It has made a huge difference. I have always slept with s chin strap. Do you use a chin strap to keep your mouth closed?
  9. Nails reflect our health. They respond to Protein and Vitamin level. Make sure you are getting in all of your protein and taking your Vitamins and supplements as directed (not just biotin).Yep protein is 80+ grams a day and vitamins are all on point and blood levels are appropriate But I have also never had great nails but they are a tad worse now But...that said I can deal with my nails until they are back up to par it would be harder for me personally,to lose my hair and have to cut it. I have long black hair , to my waist and it would kill me to cut it ...god that sounds vain! Sorry! Lol I always wore my hair long. Not long after surgery I got mine cut off and donated it. I LOVE wearing it short, now.

Here is what I have found that works for me: Track my food. I use MyFitnessPal. Get at least 64 oz of Fluid every day. I count all fluids, including my protein shakes toward this total. (I also avoid carbonation and severely limit caffeine.) Get at least 100 grams protein every day. Avoid starches, added sugars, and fried foods. Practice eating mindfully: Eat slowly, take small bites, and chew thoroughly. Take my Vitamins and supplements as directed. Exercise. Once my incisions healed, I got back in the pool. My primary exercise is swimming. Weigh infrequently (no more often than once a week). Get enough restful sleep. Do something creative every day. (For me, this is part of stress management. Exercise, nutritious food, sleep, etc. are all part of my goal to manage my stress on healthy ways.) Journaling/prayer/meditation/spiritual practice. Participating on BariatricPal and attending support group meetings when possible. Continuing to learn and read about obesity, nutrition, emotional eating, etc. And, learn to Embrace the Stall http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall

Participating in this site is definitely one way to keep my hands busy so I don't mindlessly eat. This sounds like you are on the right track!

    Sleeved 5/4...

You have just had major surgery. Your primary goal is healing. You were filled with IV fluids and have lots of swelling. As far as I am concerned, the numbers on the scale in the first few weeks after surgery are basically worthless. Early out I only weighed at my doctors appointments. As you heal you will see changes on the scale. Just a warning. None of us lose at a constant or steady rate. We all experience stalls and slow downs in weight loss. Just about everyone experiences a stall about three weeks after surgery. Just be patient. Focus on healing and following your program. Track your food. Make sure you get at least 64 oz of Fluid. Make sure you meet your Protein goal every day. Avoid starches, added sugars, and fried foods. Take your Vitamins and supplements as directed. Exercise when cleared. And, stay off the scale. This doesn't sound like it will give you much Protein. What is your protein target? (Mine is 100 grams a day.) What is your plan to get in your protein? Didn't your surgeon/NUT give you a post-op eating plan? You shouldn't have to wing it.

    Shakeology after VSG?

I haven't. What is the nutritional profile? Aren't these the kind that are high carb? What does your NUT say?

LOL, you know that as soon as you find the "perfect pair" they are going to be too large!

    8 weeks post op

I agree. Your NUT would be the person to ask. My primary focus is Protein and fluids. If you are getting in all of your protein and fluids, then you should be fine. You may need some extra carbs above that for your exercise intensity so that is where your NUT will have the expertise to help. I the meantime, focus on getting in all of your protein and AT LEAST 64 oz of Fluid (more if you are exercising a lot), taking your Vitamins and supplements as directed, and avoiding added sugars, starches, and fried food.

    Pre-Op Psychiatric visit

Yes it can.Happend to me I am surprised you were denied outright without a plan to address your issues/barriers to success. Rather than lying, why not ask for help developing a plan to help you deal with the fact that being around food post-op will be a challenge?

    Loneliness

For some reason the link isn't coming up.
  20. It sounds like you are doing ok (except maybe for the rice crispies.) Are you taking a PPI? Sometimes stomach acid seems like hunger. Early out, especially when I was still on liquids, I ate pretty much round the clock in order to get in all of my protein and fluids. That is your priority. As you start to eat more solid, satisfying foods and can get more protein in per meal you won't need to eat as often.

    That 3 week stall tho!

Weighing less frequently is a great idea. Embrace the Stall http://BariatricPal.com/index.php?/topic/351046-Embrace-the-Stall

    I usually do!

  24. This sounds great (mostly). I would recommend that you work with your programs NUT for your self-styled pre-op diet 1) just in case your surgeon has a requirement for a supervised diet, and 2) to make sure it is healthy -- I would definitely run this appetite suppressant/supplement by your medical team. Best of luck, the next few months are going to be an adventure!
