    What to eat

I agree. Plus: walk as soon as you can and sip, sip, sip!

    What to eat

Definitely talk to your NUT. You should get a list for each post-op phase. Mine were: Week one - Clear liquids (with a couple of exceptions) Week two - full liquids Week three - soft foods Week four - soft mechanical Etc. Initially, for clear liquids I was allowed: Premier Protein (exception to clear), ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates, ProtiDiet creamy chicken and tomato basil Soups (exception to clear), bone broth, Isopure clear, decaf tea, Herb tea, plain Water, water with crystal light and Mio drops, sugar-free Jello, sugar-free Popsicles Full liquids were all of the above, plus: other Protein shakes, pudding, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, v8, no sugar added apple sauce Soft foods: all of the above plus: refried Beans, tuna, soft cheese, deli turkey, soft cooked vegetables like green beans, etc. Soft mechanical: soft foods that are a bit chewier (I don't remember the list). I found it helpful for several months to keep out my approved list and consult it frequently. I didn't put anything new in my mouth without checking the list for a while until I was comfortable knowing what was allowed. You really need to follow your program because it does vary from program to program. The priorities are Fluid (at least 64 oz) and protein (my target is 100 grams). Tracking is critical (I use MyFitnessPal) to make sure I am reaching my targets. Fluids and protein are critical for healing and weight loss. The texture is critical for healing and to avoid complications.

    Am i in trouble?

Its very odd to change my thinking around this bc i hot my surgery so i cant eat too much, but now i have to eat more than i feel i am capable of. Lol It is completely different from our pre-op life. Pre-op it was about maximizing volume and minimizing calories. Post-op, it is about maximizing nutrition and minimizing volume.

When can I get in a pool?

I was cleared to get in the pool once my incisions had healed and closed up completely with no holes. It was about 4 weeks post-op.

    Am i in trouble?

I have to snack to get in enough protein. There is nothing wrong with small protein-rich meals and snacks throughout the day.
  6. The practice of medicine is not an exact science. I think there is such variation, because out surgeon's come up with guidelines based on a combination of research and experience. I hope that their primary goal is to keep us healthy and alive and to heal with no complications.

    Family poaching off your plate

My sister used to say she wasn't hungry and not order anything and then try to eat off of everyone else's plate. It drove me crazy! Just order what you want. If he wants two meals, then let him order two meals.
  8. So does eating Protein.
  9. There is a reason they are allowed during the liquid phase.

    Advice

It was my first surgery ever. So, it would have been nice to know that the worst part was not knowing what to expect. The surgery was the easiest part. The post-op recovery wasn't bad at all.

    Calories

Why wouldn't it? If you have a maximum calorie limit then I would think that counts all calories.

    Calorie absorption. Wishful thinking?

Just in my educated opinion, I think that as long as we aren't eating more than 30 grams at a time we should be ok. I would rather be a little over my protein requirement than to not be getting enough protein. It is a balancing act, but I think for bariatric patients, if we don't eat more than 30 grams at a time we shouldn't be afraid of protein.

    Actually seeing small results!

Beautiful! And, it's just the beginning. You are off to a great start!

    Calorie absorption. Wishful thinking?

According to this, the excess Protein is converted to energy (which, if I understand correctly, if not used, can be stored as fat). http://www.shape.com/healthy-eating/diet-tips/ask-diet-doctor-eating-too-much-protein-waste

    Calorie absorption. Wishful thinking?

Are you sure? It is my understanding that excess protein can be stored as fat. I may be wrong. I'll have to see if I can find more info.

    Starting my journey..need advice!

This is a decision you need to make with your surgeon. Just learn as much as you can and ask lots of questions. None of us can tell you what is right for you. We can only share our own experience. You absolutely can lose weight with either surgery as long as you follow your program and do your part. I was sleeved April 20, 2015 and started at a much higher weight than you. I couldn't be happier with my surgery, recovery, and results so far.

    I have two questions!?!?

1 -- Yes. 2 -- I don't know. What does the label say? Is it within the guidelines given to you by your NUT? What is the protein to carb ratio?

    3 months post-op!

Congratulations! This is so great to hear.

    Am i in trouble?

Whether you feel like it or not you HAVE to get in enough Fluid and protein. That means AT LEAST 64 oz of fluid and (for me) 100 grams of protein. I don't really track calories, but to me, anything under 1000 calories is too low. Arbitrarily cutting your calories is the worst thing you can do. Protein and fluids are critical for healing, weight loss, and health/survival. Getting dehydrated is extremely dangerous in the short term. Not getting enough protein is extremely dangerous over time. Please do everything you can to get in ALL of your fluids and protein. Call your NUT and call your doctor if you can't. How do you calculate your protein intake?

Read labels, weigh, measure, and track in MyFitnessPal. If I am out at a restaurant, I can usually find the item, or an approximation, already in MyFitnessPal. If not, then I estimate based on individual ingredients.

    Does anyone dance for exercise?

Once you are cleared by your surgeon and you feel up to it, dance is a great exercise. ANYTHING you do to MOVE is a good thing. You could dance on your own and even join a class. Anything you enjoy doing is going to make it easier to do.

    Calorie absorption. Wishful thinking?

My understanding is that anything (protein, carbs, and fat) that you eat that isn't metabolized right away is stored as fat.

    Food

I wasn't allowed fruit and peanut butter until later phases. You MAY be able to add some PB2 to your shakes though. What do your guidelines say? If in doubt, call your NUT for clarification.Thanks. NUT? Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App NUT = nutritionist Does your surgeon provide access to nutrition training and counseling? Aren't you working with a nutritionist/registered dietitian?
