    My First Roadblock

Thanks for the info on blood thinners and green (sounds like cruciferous?) vegetables. I'll add that to my "learn something new everyday" file. My surgeon is excellent and did not require me to lose a significant amount of weight before surgery and I started with an extremely high BMI. I agree that you may want to see if you can find a surgeon who has experience with and is comfortable with treating higher BMI patients. I know I was so far at the end of my rope with such a broken metabolism that losing weight on my own became next to impossible. I count it as a victory that I didn't gain beyond my starting weight in the year and a half that it took me from starting the process to surgery date. Thankfully, I was sleeved on April 20 and couldn't be happier with my recovery. Best of luck. The process can be daunting but if you are anything like me, by the time surgery roles around you will be eager to get it over with.
  2. DVT is a very real risk for any surgery. That is why the surgeon's instructions include blood thinners, leg compression devices, but most importantly, walking.

    Gyms - your opinions

Where I used to live we had an awesome YMCA. I love Water aerobics. It's great for folks with joint issues. I have a pool at home so I plan to swim and do water aerobics once my incisions heal. Once I am more mobile I am going to rejoin our local wellness center.

    Let's talk about EXERCISE!

Great topic. You may want to consider putting this in the Fitness Forum.

    My First Roadblock

Maybe it's just me but I have never heard that green vegetables and blood thinners are incompatible. Is this just for you or is this something that is generally known? Just curious.

    sleeve leakages

My surgeon checks while you are still out on the table with a scope. Then, with an upper GI the next morning (where you drink this weird liquid).

How bad is the gas pains?

Everyone is different. I feel very fortunate: no nausea and minimal gas pain. The worst was in my left shoulder. Walking and a heating pad helped.

    Ky pre sleeve?

I was sleeved April 20 by Dr. Weiss at Georgetown Bariatric. My surgery and recovery are going well. I just started my soft food stage.
  10. What an inspiration. You look awesome!

    Whoops- a craving...

Fruit and yogurt have carbs and carbs are stored in the liver. The goal of the pre-op diet is to shrink the liver/burn all the stored carbs in your liver. My pre-op diet was basically Adkins phase 1 (high protein, very low carb).

What Habits did you changed before Surgery?

I was sleeved on April 20 with a very long time to prep before surgery. I weaned myself off of caffeine and pop, increased my Water consumption, focused on Protein, exercised 60 min a day, and practiced eating slower/chewing more. Weaning myself off of pop was the big one. Once I realized I could make that one change, the thought of the other changes I would have to make in my lifestyle seemed much more manageable.

    2013 sleeved and tried everything!

Have you met with a NUT lately? Maybe now would be a good time to make an appointment and talk with a professional about your goals.
  17. This was my first surgery and the anticipation was the hardest part. The actual surgery was the easiest part. Chances are quite good that you will be just fine. See you on the other side!

    April 20th buddy

I am late to check in on this thread but I too was sleeved on April 20. I am on full liquids and have been able to reach my protein goals since Day 2. I am not yet getting 64 oz of water but am still getting most of my fluids from protein shakes and soup.
  19. I agree with Miss Mac. I see so many posts where people say they "can't" tolerate or handle or whatever they are required to do when they really mean they "won't". As my NUT pointed out, nothing we are required to do is forever. The post-op stages and requirements are for my benefit (healing and weight loss). Why would I risk my health and recovery because I don't like a particular protein shake or whatever? SMH.

7weeks out, feeling down, weight stopped

I see no mention of protein in your post. Are you making any attempt to reach your protein and water goals? I am not yet seven weeks, but it is a full time job getting in my protein (on full liquids). I find that the protein shakes offer plenty of sweetness and I actually prefer savory soups, etc. I can't even imagine eating something like icing. Yuck.
  22. I was recently sleeved (August 20) and can honestly say the worst part of the experience was the anticipation and unknown. It took a long time to get my surgery date (for a variety of reasons) but time has absolutely flown by since. It is natural to have some fear but if you are prepared and have done your research chances are very good that you will be fine.

    Beach after surgery

I was told no swimming/immersion in water until incisions are completely healed. Maybe mid-late August would be better than early August just in case.
  24. To answer your specific question about Gumbo from my perspective and understanding. As a sleever, when you are past the liquid stage, when you eat Gumbo then eat Gumbo. You wouldn't need to strain/ separate liquids and solids. Just eat it like you would normally eat it (except smaller bites chewed well). I would forego or minimize rice.
