Eating too much too soon?
Sportgirl63 replied to BobbieND's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here I thought I was the only one experiencing this. I have no idea what full feels like. I have not had any dumping. I can eat anything and any amount and I'm 8 months out. I was really hoping for the restrictions. But it ultimately comes down to what I choose to do. I like the idea of putting things in 3 oz cups, I'll have to give that a try. -
No drinking before, during or after eating
Sportgirl63 replied to carolk36's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The drinking thing is difficult for me too, especially after eating and waiting the 30 minutes. My NUT told me that to drink before eating is not as much of a concern, but definitely avoid liquids during and 30 minutes after. I totally get it - you don't want to push foods through too quickly. Really it's just a habit that you have to work through. I don't put a glass for myself on the table during meals and when finished I try to find something else to do that gets me out of the kitchen. Good luck! -
I'm new to this site and looking for all the support I can get (tough love is welcomed, I can handle it)! My story started nearly 13 years ago when I had a VBG (vertical banded gastroplasty). At the time I was committed to living a healthier lifestyle (making good food choices and exercising everyday). Over the first 18 months I lost 114 lbs and gained a new baby. Yes, four months after wls I became pregnant (that's a whole other story), and a little over a year from the date of surgery I gave birth to a healthy baby girl. Needless to say, my focus became all about taking care of a new baby. Over the years the weight crept back on (poor eating choices, no exercise, a bad attitude, depression, frustration, etc.). In January of 2013 I decided to look into having a "revision". Many things had changed in the world of WLS and I was hopeful that a different type of procedure would be the answer. I met up with Dr Schwartz, shared my previous experience with WLS, and thus began a new journey. I jumped through all the familiar hoops that one must jump through in preparation for WLS along with a few other hoops that are required for someone seeking a revision. All went quite smoothly, however it did take some time. In November 2013 I had my revision. I did not have a single complication...the procedure was relatively painless. In the months since my surgery I have lost 50 lbs. I had expected that having a RNY would force me to change the way I eat, what I eat, how much I eat; like it does for so many others. I will be honest, in my desperation to be thin, I hoped the RNY would force me to change the way I eat. I wanted salty snack foods, sodas, sugary foods, etc., to make me sick! I didn't want to have to rely on self-discipline to stay away from the things I shouldn't eat. After all my extra pounds are not the result of an underlying health condition, simply put they're a result of years of bad choices. So where do I go from here? Another Weight Watcher meeting, Medifast, LA Weight Loss, or a "supervised" liquid diet through my local clinic? I don't think so. I choose to go here...I choose to work the WLS program, but I need your help, encouragement, SUPPORT. I'm looking forward to hearing from all you WLS winners!

I, too, am an emotional eater! Say what you want about WLS, but if you don't learn to control the emotional eating, WLS just isn't going to work. Not only am I an emotional eater, but I also have some pretty bad eating habits (snacking in front of the TV, eating on the go, snacking at my desk). I would bet most WLS patients have tried just about every diet known to man, hoping that "this is the one" that will change my life. I thought WLS would change my life. I thought it would force me to eat smaller portions. I thought I would get sick if I had things like pop, salty/fatty Snacks, sweet treats, etc. But, no, nothing has changed. I get up every morning thinking that today is a new day, one free of eating mistakes. I'm going to be strong, eat healthy, get some exercise. HA! Every night when I go to bed I'm thinking tomorrow is a new day, I'll do better tomorrow. One of these days, it's all going to sink in....I'm just hoping sooner than later.

7 months post op and pregnant
Sportgirl63 replied to Madelyne Bonthron's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I experienced this same thing...back in Oct of '01 I had WLS and in Mar of '02 found out I was expecting. What a shocker! Not only was I a recent WLS patient, but I had high blood pressure, and I was approaching 40. Now 11 years later I have a beautiful daughter that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world! Here's what I can tell you about my experience...I did continue to lose weight during my pregnancy. I did have gestational diabetes, but that is not uncommon. My advice is to make sure you have an OB/GYN that is familiar with WLS (mine actually did a bariatric rotation with my weight loss surgeon). Don't forget to take care of yourself. The demands of a pregnancy and taking care of a newborn can be so overwhelming and for me it was very easy to lose sight of my weight loss goals. I just had a revision in November and although I don't regret it, I sure don't recommend it. Take care of yourself now. Don't lost sight of your goals. What you do now to take care of yourself will make you a better mom. Enjoy your pregnancy, but take care of yourself! -
