  1. My 18 y/o daughter is the one giving me a terrible time. She also has a weight problem and seems to be angry that I am doing something proactive. I am now on the pre-op liquid diet. Not a meal goes by that she is not making extra for me and then getting angry that I tell her no, or at dinner she gets mad because I am sitting with the family and don't have a plate of food. I'm sure as heck not going to let my kid sabotage me, but she definitely makes liquids a little harder. I'm hoping she eventually comes around
  2. BJean: There is the Official Scrabble Dictionary and also websites like isc.ro where you can play for free against people of all play levels. The website is a very good practice tool. As far as the commune, I really am aging myself, aren't I?! It was a growing and exploring experience when I was in my late teens and early 20's. I could never do it now. I like my creature comforts too much. But many of the "hippie" principles and thoughts will carry with me forever.
  3. I play tournament Scrabble I love Doris Day movies, especially the funny ones I have been married for 21 years, am crazy about my husband I have 2 tattoos, and my nose is pierced (little diamond on the right side) A long time ago, I lived in a commune This is my second marriage

    No one in Nov?

My surgery is 2 weeks from tomorrow. I don't have to start the liquid diet until this Sunday, but I'm going full liquid tomorrow. I'm so excited that I can't eat, which is a first in my life!! I have a metabolic test and my psych eval. on Friday, and meet with my surgeon on 11/1 for the final time before surgery to get all the last minute stuff. I've had a lot of surgeries, but I've never been so excited as I am about this one!! For the first time in years, I feel good about me :clap2:

    I've just discovered Chai Tea!!!!

Ok, nobody laugh. What is chai? I know I need to find something to drink other than my Bustelo (very strong coffee). You're talking to someone who has never been in a Starbucks. Thanks.
  7. Did you tell people you were having it done? Did you eat like you were never going to eat again????? Did you establish an exercise program? What was your favorite Protein drink and where did you purchase. I haven't been banded yet...16 more days!! But I can answer your questions. I am telling only the people that I would normally share personal info with. I am actually eating more carefully and smaller amounts to get into better, life long habits. Since I've lost weight from eating smaller amounts and substituting, this week, 2 meals with a Protein Drink, I have been exercising regularly because I feel so good! I really like Atkins Advantage and unjury

    diet?

I have to go on a 10 day liquid only diet starting this next Saturday. I did start easing into it last week, though. I had a protein drink for breakfast and 2 light meals. This week, I am replacing 2 meals with a protein drink, and then I start all liquid Saturday. I couldn't see going from 3 meals a day to just drinks. I've been using Atkins Advantage and Unjury. Both are pretty good

Congratulations!!:clap2: I can't wait to get where you are.
  11. I have a great mom, don't get me wrong. She is loving and generous, but very hard to please. I should be having surgery next month, and I will tell her after all is scheduled. Over the years, my sisters and I have become very skilled at letting her comments roll off. I am the oldest. Before my sister had GBS 6 years ago, my mother was always harping on her weight, 300+. Now she weighs 140 and looks spectacular. Now my mom complains that she is too thin. She also blames every cold and flu on "the surgery". My other sister lost 70 lb. through Weight Watchers. Again, complaints from mom that now she's too thin. She also looks great and weighs in at 130. If she goes to the bathroom during a meal, my mom accuses her of purging (she's not, just peeing!). I weigh 275 and I know from the sisters that she also is frequently bringing my weight up to them. I know she is going to have something negative to say to me. I am prepared for her and have lots of support, but it's still my mom and her voice rings in my head whether I want it to or not. How do others handle negative comments? BTW, my mother is barely 5 feet tall and has never weighed more than 110 in her life. She has no clue what being overweight is. She always tells me her meals because she thinks that will give me have a better idea of how to eat. Believe me, I know how to eat :biggrin1:. I don't want her support if she can't truly give it to me. I'm just wondering how others deal with others who are negative and, sometimes, mean. Thank you.

    alcoholic beverages??

I seldom drink, but do like a glass of wine on occasion. My surgeon told me that one every once in a while is ok

    Self Pay Banding

My fee is $18,600. I am also self pay. The fee includes all pre-op testing, psychologist, and 1 year post-op doctors visits, any blood tests, and fills. It will be worth every penny.
  14. I will be banded 3 weeks from today, 11/8. I have always prepared healthy meals, but my 18 y/o daughter has gained a lot of weight in the past year from eating junk that she gets at school, stopping at McD's and DQ for ice cream and eating snacks that are really a meal. It started happening when her dad and I separated. She has asked me for help and I have shown her how to weigh, measure, keep a food diary, etc. It's getting her to continue that is difficult. She's angry with me because, in her words, now she'll be the only fat one in the house. Has anyone had the experience that others in the family are more motivated to lose weight after someone in the household has been banded? She has refused counseling to talk about her anger, which I know plays a huge part in her weight gain. I am so afraid that she'll end up as large and unhappy as I have been.
  15. I have Blue Advantage which is part of bcbs/IL. They used to require 6 mos. of supervised dietician visits, but recently changed it to 12 mos. They also reserve the right to require 12 more mos. Also, they require that you have co-morbidities. I have a BMI of 47.3. Amazingly, that is not enough to qualify for surgery. Thankfully, I don't have high cholesterol, high BP, or diabetes. I am also considered too healthy to be considered at this time :faint: I decided that at my current age of 50, I did not want to wait for 12-24 months to have surgery and possibly develop an illness. I got a loan and am paying for the surgery myself. My date is 11/8/07. The other irony is that I can get my excess stomach skin removed at 100% insurance coverage, and possibly get my breasts lifted, because BCBS recognizes that there are health risks, such as skin infections, from sagging, folded skin . So my thought is, I pay for the surgery myself, but in 2 years I'll have a flatter tummy and nice breasts courtesy of my insurance.
  16. I asked my doc about the ibuprophen because I can't take Tylenol. He gave me the ok for that. There is no adult liquid ibuprophen, per the pharmacist, but name brands have the adult dosage on the box. Hope that helps

    Best thing about being slim?

    1. Climbing stairs without being out of breath 2. Not having to avoid some chairs because they are too narrow or because I'm afraid they might not hold me 3. My jeans not being too tight at the waist band 4. I want to be proud to go out with my husband (who is a babe!!) and not wonder who is thinking, "What's he doing with HER?" 5. Knees and feet no longer hurting all the time 6. Being here to spend time with my someday grandchildren 7. Oh, yea, and really sexy underthings!
  18. I am getting banded 2 weeks before Thanksgiving, 11/8. I had to think about the holiday stuff , too. What it came down to for me is, was I going to postpone what I am very ready for so I can eat more food, or was I going to get on with a new phase in my life when I was ready to do it? There will always be something important happening no matter when surgery is done. My thought was, yes, the food is wonderful at Thanksgiving and Christmas, but there is so much more that I enjoy that I will be participating in with renewed health and joy

    Heartburn and Prilosec

I have had reflux for many years and take Protonix. My surgeon wants me to take for a month after surgery and then go off it to see what happens. He states that in his experience, most people do not needs meds after they have lost some weight. I can only hope.

    Pre-op Diet

Even though I don't have to start my liquids only pre-op diet until 10/29, I'm starting today so I can phase it in. It doesn't make sense to me to go from food to only liquids over night. I have Unjury for at home and Atkins Advantage to take to work. I am having liquid for one meal this week, 2 meals next week and then go into full liquid until 11/8 surgery date. My sister, who had GBS 6 years ago, said she went from food to full liquids over night and by day 3, would have been happy to eat the floor! I'm hoping to avoid that......my floors are linoleum or carpet. Not the best diet!

    No one in Nov?

The other day I posted that I was hoping my surgery date would be in November. Had my meeting with my surgeon today and have an official date of November 8. I am so excited!!!!:whoo:
  25. The amount of time people take off after surgery seems to vary from 5 days to 3 weeks. Is there an average time, possibly due to what one does at their job? I am a therapist in several schools, and travel around town on a daily basis. I'm going to be able to modify what I carry around as needed. My plan is to be back to work 4-5 days after surgery. My doc seems to think there will be no problem. Is it mostly soreness, gas and bloated stomach I will be dealing with? I have a very good pain tolerance. Thank you.
