Using Straws - if drink is 0 cal, why can't u
BDM replied to BDM's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone. I had accidentally got a diet lemonade from a stand and drank it thru a straw. Got me to thinking why did it matter. Now I know. My NUT and surgeon never mentioned no straws. Appreciate the comments -

I understand the importance of not drinking your calories. I was never warned about not using a straw. I saw people on here mentioning that they were told not to. The only thing I've read is that you drink fluids a lot faster if you are drinking through a straw. My question is, unless I was drinking something with calories, what does it matter. If I'm drinking a diet tea with zero calories, why does it matter. -
When does fullness in chest feeling stop
BDM posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been on purée foods for couple weeks. Every time I eat I get this full feeling in my chest like the food is stuck. I can't take any pressure on my stomach either. I feel uncomfortable. No I haven't eaten too much. 1/3rd cup to 1/2 cup. And the feeling starts a few bites in. The book says this full feeling in chest is normal. My concern is that I hate eating because of the feeling. I'd like to think a year from now eating won't feel this way. Does anyone know when this feeling will gradually end. I'm 4 weeks out. -
Okay. 3 weeks post op. And only last two days I've been getting nauseous. Seems weird that it's 3 weeks in. I'm eating same things. Drinking same things. Doing same things. Anyone else get nauseous weeks later. I take a ppi (protonix). Not sure I can take anything else. I heard taking pepto bismal is a no no. I'm gonna call the doctor tomorrow.

Had my sleeve 3 weeks ago. My suggestion is go to the unjury.com site and buy a couple containers of unflavored Protein powder. Getting the protein in with out it the first week was hard. Look in your grocery store milk section for Rockin Refuel chocolate milk. Make sure it's the chocolate with high protein. It tastes close to chocolate milk and tastes better than other Protein shakes. It has 30g of protein & 9g carbs. You add a scoop of the unjury and you got 2/3rds of your protein for the day - 50g I'm not sure how long you are on all liquids. My program was 1 week. Then I moved to purée. sugar free ice pops are my best friend. I can't drink tons so the sugar free ice Popsicles give me extra fluids & taste decent.

CPAP USERS - how did u titrate down on air pressure
BDM posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As I gained weight, every time the sleep lab would want me to go through another overnight sleep test. It's such a pain. I haven't been to the sleep lab in 2 years. I realize I could call my doctor and get scheduled to sleep lab but as I drop more and more weight, I don't want to have to go back in for sleep studies or overnight titration. I've only lost 35lbs (which I'm happy with in 3 weeks) so my current air pressure should still be okay. But I lose another 30 and I may not need all the pressure. Anyone else using a Cpap or Bipap machine who may been 6 months post op or more that could share how they handled it, I would appreciate the feedback. -
cant stomach chewable vitamins help!
BDM replied to karlam29's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 2 & 1/2 weeks out. I had a post op infection. They gave me "horse" pills for antibiotics. NO WAY I could swallow them. I use a little plastic pill crusher my wife got me at target. I then pour the powder into my protein shake. I never tast it. I've also put it in fat free pudding and applesauce. I would assume you could do the same with the chewable vitamins. If u get the liquid ones and don't like the taste, u could probably mix them in with crystal lite. -
On clear liquids but dying to eat something!

After 1 week after surgery I am allowed mash potatoes with a little gravy. Purée meat, fruit or vegatables (cooked & purée). I'm at 2 weeks now. A few days ago I had cream of wheat banana flavored. I had beef strips purée with light mayo. Tip: heat the purée meat. Tastes better. Had a couple no sugar fudgsicle and ton of sf popsicles. Also - try rockin refuel chocolate milk found in grocery stores. If u like chocolate milk, this is very close. Has 30g of Protein and 9g of carbs. So much better than shakes. But ONLY chocolate. The other flavors have 50g of sugar & 20g of protein. I guess every program is different. I was only pure liquid 1 week before & 1 week after -
self medicated injections?
BDM replied to Amarie812's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Forming blood clots after surgery is a serious concern. My surgeon said they are doing this more & more for surgeries (not just bariatric). I had to give myself a shot the night before surgery and they have me shots of it while I was recovering. They called it a prophylactic (preventative) treatment. The shots were VERY easy. U do the shots a few inches away from belly button and below. I've not heard of it happening 2weeks prior though. Interestingly they also give insulin injections in post op care. To everyone, u don't have to be diabetic. The shock to the system from surgery triggers stress hormones which trigger insulin spikes. So if your sugar is above a certain amount, they give shots. Keeping sugar low promotes healing. Those shots didn't hurt either. Only needle thing that hurt a bit was blood sugar tests. Never had to do that before. If they do regular checks while your are in, make sure to do it on SIDES of your finger tip. Less nerves there. Plus it seemed to help what the nursing assistant squeeze the finger tight (sort of pinching your finger with their finger and thumb on too and bottom). When they applied that pressure to quick stick didn't hurt. I had a bunch of different Aides and some didn't pinch the finger. They just stuck me and it stung. -
I get really weak and tired. I'm 2 weeks out as of tomorrow. It's easier for me to walk up and down steps but trying to pick up stuff or hold it that's 10 or 15 pounds is tiring and I just don't have the strength. I'm getting Protein & calories. I'm taking my Vitamins. So has anyone else felt weaker and how long did it take to pass

PREVENTING STARVATION MODE - up cals 1 day a wk

I was advised a minimum of 800 calories & 75g of Protein. I struggle to hit 800. They want me eating SugarFree everything, pudding, ice pops, etc. also low fat or fat free. Based on how little I can eat, the low fat sugar free doesn't help get me to 800. Yesterday I hit 950 but it's because my wife got me 2 packs of Italian ice. She didn't realize 1 pack wasn't sugar free. It was 100 calories. I didn't realize it either and that was the pack I opened. After I had my 2nd one I decided to scan them into MyFitnessPal. Eyes popped wide open. I should have known sugar free isn't that good. But it got me thinking that if I could do a day where I am up 200 -300 calories I might prevent really bad stalls. I just don't want to do it with 100% sugar. Thanks for the replies -

I'm worried that my body will go into starvation mode and stall my weightloss. Was anyone advised to take 1 day a week & try to take a couple extra hundred calories. So like 800-900 calories for 6 days and then 1000-1100 on day 7. -

Protein Supplements, what's good, whats bad?

rockin refuel Protein chocolate. It's in Dairy case near milk. The chocolate is 30g protein and 9g net carbs. They other flavors have a TON of sugar and only 20g. The unjury.com website has unflavored that can be mixed in anything except plain Water. My friend had the strawberry & really likes it. 20g a scoop. KEEP IN MIND don't mix Protein Powder in any food hotter than 150°. The protein breaks down, gets clumpy and dietician says u lose grams of protein as a result. The one thing different I would have done is order the unjury beforehand. Im waiting for my order (few days). I'm 10 days post op and it's so hard to get the 800 calorie. & 75g protein minimum. The rockin refuels help but I get so bloated and feel like I'm force feeding the liquid -
Week post op too had it June 25th. I get terrible dry mouth over night. I keep sugarless gum on hand. I sit or stand up and chew gum and it helps.
