    Post Op June 2014 Sleevers

Hello =) That is very sweet of you to make this page! Are you planning on making it a secret page by any chance? Only a hand full of people even knows I gained all my weight back from my year of doing the hCG diet on and off. (I got ridiculed enough for doing that diet.) I haven't posted a picture of myself in over a year! It's just with all the problems and weeks of hospitalization due to my sleeve, I don't think I have it in me at this point to defend what I've done to myself. If you do make it secret I'd love to join!! I need all the support I can get going through this hell.

Thank you. It's getting better, but I'm still having trouble getting in fluids. To answer your question, yes my doc did have me drinking right away. His way is he doesn't do a swallow test unless there are issues. I've read that this is pretty standard depending on your surgeon.

    Post Op June 2014 Sleevers

Hello all! I had my sleeve on June 10th. My surgery seemed to go just fine and as expected. Of course with my luck, I was vomiting blood with every sip of fluid I took. On June 11th I had an upper G.I. contrast swallow test to show what was going on. There was a blood clot at the end of my esophagus blocking access to my stomach. On June 12 the doctor performed an endoscopy and removed the blood clot. After removing the blood clot he was able to see that what was left of my stomach had twisted ferociously and the opening to my pylorus was extremely tight. After these findings of course I had to go right back into surgery. The doctor did some cutting, some stretching, some slicing, and some finagling to fix it. After the first surgery I starting to get dehydrated and my veins were being uncooperative. I was kept in the hospital until the evening of the 14th when the doctor saw that I was able to drink and keep down fluids on my own, however small amounts they were. As of Monday the 23rd, almost 3 weeks post op during my clear liquid stage, I was drinking about 20 ounces of fluid per day and around 20 g of protein per day. Needless to say I have been extremely dehydrated and malnutritioned. I had already gone into the hospital a couple of times for IV fluids where they stabbed me countless amounts of times looking for veins that weren't there. Finally on Tuesday, the 24th, I saw my doctor, and he sent me over to the hospital for another upper G.I. to see what was happening. It was there that we saw I was having esophageal spasms and pylorus spasms that was pushing everything I drank back up and my stomach was not emptying at all. My surgeon consulted with several surgeons and came up with a game plan. A shit ton of medication and Botox injections into the lower part of my esophagus and somewhere in my pylorus to paralyze the nerves. I was admitted into the hospital again on June 24 due to dehydration and cramping because of low potassium levels. My doc ordered a picc line be put in to administer nutrition and hydration, and wasn't released until after my Botox injections and my potassium levels were good on June 30. So far so good except for a few superficial blood clots, constipation and nausea. If I had a time machine, I would undo it all. This has been like living a nightmare. I have put my entire family including my 3 beautiful children through hell going through with this surgery.

How bad did your IV spot hurt?

I am glad to read that you got it taken care of!!
  6. I am glad to read you are doing better and that you are no longer throwing up. Today was a bit better for me as well. I still only got in half of everything I am supposed to, but it went down easier. Thank you!!
  7. Thank you. It is so comforting to read that it gets better and that most our symptoms are similar. At least this tells me there is most likely nothing wrong. As for cold things, I can't drink really cold liquids or Popsicles, but I can chew ice. Go figure.

How bad did your IV spot hurt?

If it's swollen and hot to the touch and you are home, there may be an infection at the IV site. It's called thrombophlebitis. You'll need a course of antibiotics. I had the same thing and I still have a knot in the vein. It takes a while for the infection to go away even while on antibiotics and the knot can remain for a couple of months my doc said. Check with your doc again, because if left untreated it will get worse.
  9. I am 9 days post op and I am experiencing the exact same thing. I ended up going to the hospital for IV fluids yesterday. Don't let it go that far though because your veins are very hard to find when you are dehydrated. I was poked 6 times before they found one they could use. The spitting up blood though is worrisome. I was spitting up blood the first entire day after my sleeve and it ended up being a blood clot at the end of my esophagus due to my stomach twisting. I had to have another surgery right away because of it. Have they done a contrast X-ray test on you yet? If not I would definitely ask for one. It's the test where you drink a little bit of contrast and they watch it go down as you swallow it. That's how they found out about my issue. I still have ok days and bad days. Today was an ok day because I was able to get half my protein in and maybe a third of my fluids in. The only thing that stays in without coming back up all bubbly and gross is chicken broth blended with tasteless whey protein from GNC. I sip about 4 or 5 spoons of this every 10 or so minutes until I finish it. I have noticed that warm liquids don't cause as much spitting up if any. Popsicles cause the most for me. I can't wait till week 4!! Most of the posts I read say it gets 100 times better for us then.
  10. I'm right there with you, so I know how you are feeling, and I am so so sorry. It sucks! I don't know how I'm going to survive with all these itsy bitsy sips adding up to hardly anything at all. They are nowhere even near enough to hydrate me much less nourish me. At this point if I could undo my decision I so would. I was sleeved on the June 10th, then went back in for surgery on the 12th because my stomach twisted and I had a blood clot at the end of my esophagus. I thought things would get better after that, but so far I keep wishing for a time machine. I hope things get better for the both of us real soon!
  11. I do have anti-nausea medication, but I didn't need it until I tried a sweet fruity flavored protein drink from Health-Wise. Yuck! I don't have much nausea normally since wls, just an extremely full feeling even when I'm starving and my stomach is growling. Today was another bad day also. It was worse than yesterday! I barely got anything in at all. My stomach feels so full all of the time and I feel so weak and emotional. Finally around 6pm after slowly nursing only 4oz of my protein drink throughout the entire day, I tried warm beef broth with added protein in it. This I was finally able to drink. I actually managed a full 10 oz! Unfortunately that was all I was able to take in for the day. I was really hoping things would get better each day, but so far they are not.
  12. Thank you so much for your response! I live in the USA. I too was not extremely obese. I was 230 pounds when I had the surgery, but I have been on a weight roller coaster for the last 20 years and had just gained 60 pounds in 8 months and was still gaining. I was afraid that maybe that was causing the problem. Since I posted this last night I have read hundreds of other posts and realize most patients have a difficult time getting down fluids in the beginning. I do have sf popcicles, but they are too sweet for me for some reason and they make me nauseous. I do good with ice chips though. I do count everything I drink when counting my fl ounces of the day. All I can seem to get down though is maybe 1 or 2 small protein drinks and maybe a cup of ice chips. I also have sf jello, but again it tastes too sweet. I tried the broth again last night, but I just couldn't get more that a teaspoon down. Anything with much flavor makes me feel nauseous right now. Smells on the other hand are a different story. My family cooked yesterday and omg it smelled amazing and I felt like I was starving! I did not like that at all!! I hope that goes away soon as well. Today is a new day, and after reading all the stories here I am going to try much harder to get in my 64 oz of fluid and my 60 grams of protein! 9grammy thank you so much for suggesting freezing Gatorade! I am going to try that today. That's a great idea!
  13. I am so thankful I came across this!! Thank you so much for posting!! I feel like there really might be a light at the end of the tunnel now.
  14. Hi. I had my sleeve done on June 10th and felt pretty good about it for the most part except I was spitting up blood every time I tried to drink anything. A contrast X-ray test showed I had a blood clot blocking 95% of anything from entering my stomach. I then had an endoscopy on June 12 that also showed the upper part of my stomach was also twisted and too narrow for anything to pass through. I had another surgery that morning where the doctor removed my blood clot and fixed my stomach by doing something that's never been done before. That was the first thing that freaked me out. Also my bladder almost burst that day as well, but that's another story. I was saved from yet another surgery just in the nick of time! Now I've been home from the hospital for 2 days and going on 5 days post op and still can't get more that 25 oz of Fluid in. I feel like I'm going to burst. You know that "OMG my baby is going to pop out of my stomach Alien style" feeling you get when you're 9 months pregnant? That's how I feel when I sip anything more than an ounce in an hour. I am having melt downs feeling like I did the wrong thing by having the surgery and that I'm going to die of dehydration. I've also got a slight fever from an infection where the IV was that I started antibiotics for today. That's 10 more ml's of fluid I have to get down 4 times a day. I'm stressing so bad! Has anyone else had a horrible time drinking and staying hydrated? I'm not even getting half of what I am supposed to. I don't know what to do =(
