Gallbladder Surgery Schedule 3months post-opt
Mayaresearchmom replied to ocrystal96's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was 6 weeks post-op. I knew going into bypass surgery that I had gall stones, but doc didn't take it out during surgery. I didn't gave any issues after surgery, but needed a total knee, so opted to get gall bladder taken out so I didn't risk infections after knee surgery. I'm glad I had gall bladder taken out, as the pathology report showed that I had a long standing inflammation/ infection that was not manifesting as a full blown gall bladder attack. Surgery was a breeze. I was headed out the door to go home about 1 hour after coming out of recovery. The best thing the anesthesiologist offered he was a nerve block on my abdomen. It lasted a couple if days, and allowed me to get around pain free in those days following surgery. Surgery was on Wednesday, and I went back to work the following Monday. If you are offered the block TAKE IT! -
Problems with protein
Mayaresearchmom replied to Easterli's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Easterli I had problems with eggs to start with. I finally found that the only way I could have them was as egg salad. I talked to my NUT, and she said quite a few people have issues with eggs, and that it is easier to handle boiled mashed up eggs than scrambled or fried to start with. I have also found it easier to digest boneless skinless chicken thighs instead of chicken breast. It's all about the dryness of the chicken breast. -
counting calories?
Mayaresearchmom replied to breehuskins's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@lose4life2 Try the My Fitness Pal app. It works great for logging your foods. You can set it for the amounts/limits of Protein, days and carbs that your doc and NUT set for you. Mine is 60 grams of protein, 30 grams of fats, and 100 grams of carbs per day. I also keep track of weight, daily Vitamins, exercise etc. The app can be used on your computer or phone. It's been a lifesaver for me. I feel like it keeps me accountable for what I eat. It has most foods on it already, and you can also input your own recipes. -
I am a Newbie. What the heck is an NSV?
Mayaresearchmom replied to tgleicher's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
NSV is a Non Scale Victory. Like fitting into smaller sizes, being able to exercise more, fitting into an airplane seat without a seatbelt extender etc. -
2 days before sugery and feeling conflicted
Mayaresearchmom replied to Idahospud's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are only a few days out from surgery, so I am sure you are doing fine. My doc told me to just try to get as much as possible in, and just to try to increase the amount every day until you reach the amount. I am 4 months out, and there are still days that I struggle to get in all the fluids. And I tend to stick closer to the 60 grams of protein as opposed to the upper limit of 80 grams. Keep your chin up, you can do this! -
17 weeks out, and I've lost 68 lbs. An average of 4 lbs a week. Have gone from a size 24 to a size 14/16. For the first time in almost 25 years I'm able to shop in non-plus sized store.

2 days before sugery and feeling conflicted
Mayaresearchmom replied to Idahospud's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Idahospud! Just wanted to say hello and hope your having a good day and are on the mend. How are you doing with your fluids and protein? -
Swallowing golf balls? Ohhhh noooooooo!
Mayaresearchmom replied to Idahospud's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doctor told me to just concentrate on getting in fluids during the first week or so after surgery, and work up to getting in all your fluids and proteins. By my 2 week post op visit I was just starting to get in all my fluids and protein. One of my favorite ways of getting in protein was to mix 16 oz of cold water with a packet of classic orange crystal light, and a scoop of vanilla flavored unjury protein mix. It tastes like a dreamsicle, you can also mix it with milk, but I don't always like the texture of the milk. -
What Was Your Final "straw That Broke The Camels Back"
Mayaresearchmom replied to bigjoe102's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I broke my leg thru the knee joint 9/6/13. Had a plate and 8 screws put in to hold it together, spent 12 weeks in a wheelchair waiting for it to heal. The repair did not hold, and the plateau collapsed. Was told mid April 2014 that I needed a total knee replacement. I told the ortho doc, ok, but let me lose some weight first. He then told me that for every pound I lost, there would be 4 pounds less pressure on my knee. That was major incentive to finally have the WLS that I had been thinking about for years. I was self pay, so they "fast tracked" my gastric bypass surgery date. Had WLS done 10 June, 2014, gall bladder surgery on 28 July, and total knee on 15 September. Have lost 69 lbs since I started this journey, and aside from some knee pain, I feel great! Bypass was the best thing I have ever done for myself. -
I could be the residual gas that your doc put into your belly to be able to do your surgery. Are you walking? Does that help to alleviate the pain? You should all your doctor if it continues.

Need my gallbladder removed - nervous
Mayaresearchmom replied to RedStorm's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Had my gall bladder out 6 weeks after my bypass. The anesthesiologist gave me an abdominal block to decrease the post op pain. It made such a difference. I was up and around right after surgery. If you are offered the block, do it. -

Any relapses re: smoking after surgery?
Mayaresearchmom replied to shellbell79's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My doc actually does a blood test for nicotine levels, and if you were a smoker refused to do surgery on you until you tested negative and stayed that way for a certain amount of time. Not a problem for me since I did not smoke, but made believers out of the smokers who tried to sneak smoke. She was the same way with the liver shrink diet. She has been known to open you up on surgery day, and if you had not followed the liver shrink diet she closes you without doing the surgery and you don't go back for surgery for at least a month. -
Hello Reside! Congratulations on your success. My post op diet is 60 to 80 grams of protein a day, no more than 30 grams of fat, and no more than 100 grams of carbs. I have found that keeping track of what I eat really helps me to know what I can or cannot have. If I want half of a bagel, I have it, but make sure I put it on my tracker (MyFitness Pal) my NUT, said it is better to indulge in small amounts of what you crave and to savor every small bite than to overindulge, just make sure to get your protein in first. I can look back at my tracker, and see that I have consumed 100 grams of carbs on only 4 days out of the last 90 days. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's ok to treat yourself occasionally, and not feel guilty.

Surgery is tomorrow nervous...
Mayaresearchmom replied to sbrown1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been where you are now, just keep thinking of the end results. I was so nervous I don't think I slept at all the night before. LOL, so I slept while waiting for my surgery. Everything will be fine. Thoughts and prayers go with you. -
A touchy question lol

Look for Simethacone. That is the active ingredient in gas products.. -
Does anyone have a problem with beef?
Mayaresearchmom replied to pik's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have a problem with beef, my problem meat was chicken breast. Any way shape or form, it was just too dry, and always got stuck. I figured out that I can have boneless skinless chicken thighs. I'm 4 months out, and have only tried beef 2 times. Both times it was filet, on the rare side, and therefore easier to chew. -
You will do great. Mine was quick and painless.

I had all of the exact same feelings and thoughts on my surgery day. Thoughts and prayers are with you. Best wishes for a speedy uneventful recovery.

I CANT DECIDE BETWEEN BYPASS OR THE SLEEVE.
Mayaresearchmom replied to UrCaliGirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went with a bypass because I already had bad GERD, and the sleeve has been known to increase the amount of reflux you have. Also, according to my doc, bypass patients lose weight faster, and on average lose 10% more weight than sleeve patients do. It was an easy choice for me when I heard about the decreased GERD with bypass, as I had been miserable for years with my GERD. My surgery was 5/10/14, and I haven't had an issue with GERD since then. Good luck on whichever decision you make. I'm sure you will do fine with either. -
Help ..how many calorie am i suppose to be eating?
Mayaresearchmom replied to fran2014's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
My doctors instructions regarding diet are 60 to 80 grams of protein, 100 grams of carbs, and 30 grams of fat per day. One meal should include 12 grams of "good" fats. My daily calorie count averages between 600 and 900 depending on what I eat. I use the My Fitness Pal app to track my daily intake. You can customize the daily needs to match what you are instructed to have each day. I have to have at least 48 to 64 ounces of fluids a day, no caffeine or carbonated beverages.
