  1. I see that post too - it has the Male Only blue flag... perhaps it's browser related? I'm using Firefox.

    Woman question!

I think I saw mine on a milk carton.
  3. Don't fret, I'm sure you'll adjust to it :-) But you can certainly set the tone. The simplest in my opinion is to just say "thank you" and move on. Quick and simple. Nothing to fuel a conversation. (If it's a comment deserving of something else, then you can deal with it appropriately, lol. Sadly, there are some rude people out there - hopefully you won't run across any.) At this point in my journey I'm getting a lot of the "skinny minny" and "you're going to disappear!" comments. I just smile and move on. What ever, they have no idea that I'm at a healthy weight. They've seen me a lot bigger over the years (265+ at my highest). These comments will fade. As was said prior, it's some positive reinforcement of your hard work. Don't rely on it, just find a way to accept it. Nothing wrong with that :-)
  4. That's odd, I've been seeing it. I wonder if it's not working 100% of the time?

Mammograms - where a cup is turned into a saucer

    ...I lol'd... I'm there with you :-) I went from a 44C to a 34 double droop...
  6. My first appt was end of April and my surgery was mid August. I had no supervised diet requirement.
  7. I am almost there, lol. ONE pound to reach goal. On the one hand, I have those thoughts that it still won't happen - that it's as close as I'll get, and then I have thoughts of it's not enough, I still need to lose more. Man, at nearly a year out this is still a head game!

    Breakfast

I have a Protein shake every morning also. It's just so easy for me (I have the lazy gene). I usually blend up a Click mocha (or Chike) with baby spinach, ground flax, extra cocoa powder, a little bit of low fat milk and lots of ice. Goes in the Ninja. It lasts me most of the morning, I buy the decaf version of the Click mix so if I want a little pick me up, I add two teaspoons of instant coffee to it. The Chike is not decaf, so I use it less often, but it's really good too. Really...every day I have this. I'm so boring, but it's so good, I still look forward to it :-)

    Congratulations!!

    Goal?

I'm 5' 5" (an a half, lol) and my surgeon did set a goal for me of 138. It's smack in the middle of the BMI range. I'm not "small boned" per se. I wear from 6 to 8, or small to large depending on the make. I'm just about at my goal now.

Mammograms - where a cup is turned into a saucer

I had my first post op one in January. I was down a good amount, and it was certainly a different experience than in the past. As in a lot more stretching and squishing. (When you have plenty there, it's pretty easy) I have to say that I'm not looking forward to the next time, lol. What I had 6 months ago seems like a lot to what I have left of the girls now I do recall that on the form I fill out prior to the exam, weight change is a question. Up/down, how much. Makes sense that what they see as a result would have changed and they'd want to know in advance - thanks!
  12. there are more happy tears to come - congrats!

    migraines

I got migraines for years prior to surgery. THey are believed to be hormonal. I'm most apt to get a good one at that time of the month. The only thing that has helped reduce the frequency is topiramate. Then if I do get one, I will take a presciption pain killer and it knocks it down. It is what works for me. Fortunately, it's not too often. Only twice have I ended up in the ER for a shot to break one. I stopped the topiramate after surgery, hoping that all of the changes would some how be a help. For the first two months, I didn't have any headaches. Then they started to creep back in to my life. By month 4 I asked to go back on the topiramate. The problem with migraines is...everyone is different. I'm 52 and haven't gone through menopause. I hope when I do, and the hormones settle down, that the migraines will stop. (I can hope!) Unless there's some other factor, I wouldn't think they'd cancel surgery because you popped a migraine before surgery. Unless you're "medicating" for it and it interferes with the anestesia. Just try to relax and look forward to that nice sleep :-) Good luck!!

Food Scale - do you really need one?

It's been a necessity for me. I'm at the point where sometimes I don't weight/measure a portion. But it's very much the exception. I'm over 10 months out. It may change at some point, but at this stage I still need and use it.

    Time off work

I took two weeks. It was just enough time for me. I work in an office, no heavy lifting. I did use FMLA. I figured better safe than sorry. I had plenty of time, but if something did go wrong I wanted to have that in place and the clock having started at the beginning. Fortunately it all went fine and I was back to work as planned.

    BCBS of Mass?

Hi I have BCBS of MA. My first appointment was the end of April. I had surgery mid-August. That was to make all, of the classes, appts., the surgeons schedule, etc., that were part of the program. There was no required diet from BCBS. Although I may have wanted it to go a little faster at the time, I think it was perfect. I needed the time to adjust. I don't know how long approval took because I didn't follow it. The approval letter just showed up one day. But I didn't have any issues. My team said they are one of the easiest to work with.

Petersla4 Been using MFP since I started the process April 2014. Only day I missed logging was the day of surgery. Lol
  19. I didn't have any food funerals. I knew that I'd be able to eat again. I did plan a nice dinner before starting my liquid diet. But it was just a nice filet at a nice restaurant. Nothing crazy. No dessert. I was mentally ready I think. I would read of folks hitting all their favorite places and ordering crazy things prior to surgery. On the one hand I get it, but it seemed kind of sad too.
  20. I'm ok with sushi. I've had it a few times since surgery. Half a roll at a time. That's the only time I normally have rice. It goes down fine, but it's pretty filling. The wasabi is no problem at all...and I like to mix it in with (gluten free) soy sauce until it's green slurry. Mmm. Clears the sinuses! Lol
  21. I went through the process at Lahey in Burlington. Amazing support staff and my surgeon founded the program there, Dr. Brams. I still attend the monthly support meetings.
  22. I was at a sales dinner last night. I sat next to a very nice woman, who happens to be very, very, trim. In addition to cheese and crackers, plus at least one glass of wine pre-dinner, then two glasses with dinner, she ate the (large) starter salad, cleaned her plate (8-10oz sirloin, asparagas, and onions), plus two rolls with butter. Then dessert, tiramisu with coffee. If that is eating like a thin person, no. I'll never be able to eat like that. I have no idea how she normally eats, but I was suitably impressed - in an odd way. I had some cheese and a few grapes before dinner. A few bites of salad. Did my best to estimate 4 oz of steak, and a had a few asparagas spears. I was more than done. There was a time when I could have eaten that much food, but I would have felt like crap afterwards. I'm quite happy eating smaller meals. I still enjoy what I eat. I think that's important.
  23. I think my current favorite phrase applies here...bitches be crazy! You look freaking awesome.

    Diabetes and the Sleeve

I was type II and on metformin (varying dose) for about 10 years prior to WLS, I had the sleeve. My diabetes was pretty well controlled. My A1C always stayed below 7, but I never got it below 6. Over those ten years it would creep up towards 7, then I'd get my act together and get it closer to 6. I was told at my surgical consult that although the bypass has a better success rate with diabetes, my surgeon was 99% confident that in my case the sleeve would also resolve it for me. He did say that neither procedure was a 100% guarantee. I stopped my metformin the day of surgery and that was the end of needing it. 3 months post op my A1C was in the 5's and I was said to be in remission. It's my understanding that there's also no guarantees that it won't return. It's in remission, not cured. I could maintain a healthy BMI and I could become diabetic again. What I do know is that diabetes does not run in my family. I'm pretty certain that it was caused from being obese most of my life. Will it come back? I hope not, but I don't think anyone has the answer to that. All I can do is live a healthy life style :-)

    Just when I needed it...

I'm so sorry for your loss. They really our our family, and it truly hurts when they leave us. What a nice pick me up from your neighbor. :-) You're doing great - don't lose sight of it. Give Roxy some extra hugs!
