I first looked into WLS back in 2011 when, for the first time, I had reason to consider it. I had a 1 year old son and realized that there was so much I was going to potentially miss out on because of my size. My husband and I debated the pros and cons for quite a while, but when he got a job that included WLS coverage, we both took the plunge. Unfortunately it was short-lived. Less than a month into the journey my husband lost his job and with it our WLS coverage. We're not in a position to be able to afford the surgery without insurance, so that was the end. During that time I gained more weight, lost about 60lbs, got pregnant and had our second child. I had this grand illusion that I'd easily be able to continue my weight-loss journey after the baby was born, despite 9 months of back-sliding (which in my case just meant eating carbs again - I only gained 16lbs the entire pregnancy). Unfortunately the massive adjustment to being a stay-at-home mom, caring solo for an almost-4 year old and a new born and then other stress was working against me. I was exhausted and food choices became about convenience rather than health. Before I knew it, my daughter was 7 months old, I was 20lbs heavier than the day I delivered and I was adding a full-time job on top of everything else. When I saw WLS surgery as a covered benefit on my new insurance, I started thinking about it again but didn't bring it up to my husband right away. Then he got a job after 4 months of being unemployed and his also covered the surgery. It felt like it was time.

So in July 2014 I started my journey all over again. My surgeon is Dr. Srikanth in Federal Way, the one I originally went to back in 2011. I liked his success rates, his reviews and the follow-up his clinic seems to offer.

As of August 2014 I'm just waiting on insurance approval to set a surgery date. Here's hoping I hear something back soon.
