Surgery Buddy needed 6/24/14
old lady pilot replied to Reddrobin's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had a proximal RNY at the age of 62. I am now 10 years post op and have lost and kept off 150 lbs. We grew up in a time when you were considered fat if you were 20 pounds heavy. I was always the fat kid or fatty fatty 2by4.We were discriminated against illegally for jobs we were qualified for. Our weight histories littered with lost opportunities and careers because I did not present the slender appearance that was required by personnel managers. Those tears were long and bitter Althoh I am 10yrs out on post op personally but during the 10 years, my mouth started to revolt I started to develop very serious dental problems than were caused by dry mouth in which all my saliva stopped and my mouth go completely dry and speaking clearly was difficult. The condition can be caused by side to some prescription meds that I had to take. My Dentist could not keep up with the constant root canal s and uhh broken teeth. Suggested I have full dental implants done. The pulled all the upper teeth on Apyt?ril 1,2012. Once the swelling went down I was started we wearing full lower flash teeth that had to be gliding with copious amounts of Fixodent.During the long the recovery from the surgery which was marked with a large grape size access wedged betweenb my maxilary sinus bone on the top and smaller abcesses by the top on the upper false test. The top of the false would squeeze the access every time the teeth moved. The pain was so bad it was very hard to work to plan, book ,and ticket large group of peopletravelling to World Bank . Meetings anywhere in the world. After about 9months we decided it was time to pull the lower teeth. This was a repeat of the upper teeth. They put in the false upper teeth about 5 weeks ago and after 2 weeks the teeth fell out. They glued them back in and after 3 bites. The teeth fell out again. My Dentist is starting over on the top teeth. Why all of this...I am going to have to relearn how and what to eat. My sense of taste was basically changed. I can taker several bite of something I have really liked and after several . bits and . I stop eating it and toss it out. .For liquids I find there isl. No such thing as too much sweetener. I would put 15 sweetenurveillance packets in a coffee. I am not sure if I am a good mentor. I think we might have and interesting time. I AM VERY WORRIED THAT I WILL GAIN Weight Sorry for the typos. Is hard to hunt and peck on a Kindle -
Nausea and defeat

HI Keep at it. When things seemed overwhelming keep a mantra going of I Can Do This!! I also started a"bucket" list of things I will be able to do as I lose weight. I will no longer have to look to see if I am the fattest person in the room.I don't have to worry whether I will fit into a chair when I am out in public. I will be able to fasten my seat belt when I fly. I bought a ring that I really wanted a size too small. I Every time I hit a bump in m path I would look at it waiting for my finger. One day it fit. Then it began to get larger. It was my secret motivation' What was the ring? A big fat silver hippopotamus encrusted with blue stones and a big smile. He became the symbol of my accomplishment. I was no longer a hippo . Open your eyes every morning and say I can do this. Cheers,Jane -
Nausea and defeat

I had nausea after my RNY. This lasted for 6 weeks. We tried the usual fixes and I was still having problems. My surgeon sent me back to the gastroenterologist who had done my pre- op endoscopy. They tested me in office and said I was very dehydrated and that can contribute to nausea. They gave me 2 Iiters of D5W and that helped. But a day or so later I was back for my nausea was back and I couldn't take fluids well by mouth. More IVs. The Doc did an endoscopy and found that my stomach esophageal stoma had closed down. He stretched it out and I was better for several days. A week later he repeated the stretching and this time it worked. I was in a vicious circle of feeling nausea and not drinking and the dehydration causing nausea. They also gave me a prescription for the Zofran sublingual tablets that dissolve under your tongue. They didn't need to be swallowed and the Zofran goes to work fast. By the end of my second month everything started to work and I was losing weight. I had problems with with my prescription plan not wanting to pay for the subling meds as they are more expensive but we made a case for why I needed them. Hang in there -
Ugh...darn the naysayers!

I had proximal RNY in March 2004. There were a lot fewer options as to procedures being done. I have the kind of personality that if I can figure a way around something I will. At the time of surgery I was working in an office that had only single ladies room with 3stalls for 50+ women. These 2 considerations shaped my choice of procedure. A RNY is not something you can reverse without going through surgery again. I did not go for a distal or duodenal switch because of sharing a bathroom in very close quarters.I had sweeter vs a bloater eating habit and I had read that too much sweet stuff could cause you dump and that was like a fate worse than death! About 1 month post- op a friend of mine found about a pound of fresh duck fois gras on sale and we couldn't resist hauling out my fois gras cook book. I was still on medical leave so we planned to have it the following night. I spent the day making a roasted garlic puree to go with it. I am the cook so I reverently pan seared our prize.and we sat down to eat. I was sated after about 4 bites. About a h Alf hour later I started to feel awful. I had extremely sharp pains in my stomach. This was closely followed by very, severe stomach and intestinal cramps and diarrhea. I was dumping and hoped I was going to die to stop the pain. I had not realized that excessively fatty food could also cause very big problems!! So I learned that my new stomach had done just what I wanted. I was going to have to stick to the programme or bad things would happen again. I knew that I had picked the right procedure for me. I am now 10 years out and have lost and kept off 150lbs. I considered both the mental and physical consequences of the available surgery back then. I needed to have real consequences if I did not follow the Rules. I am sorry for the long post but as you know you have to choose what is best for your life and psyche. Having the surgery will change your life and probably also save it as it did for me. Cheers, Jane
