The Natural Diet Solution For PCOS.......
georgia girl replied to georgia girl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Here's a description of jicama that I found on the internet Jicama is a crispy, sweet, edible root that resembles a turnip in physical appearance, although the plants are not related. Jicama has been cultivated in South America for centuries, and the vegetable is quite popular in Mexican cuisine. Jicama has a unique flavor that lends itself well to salads, salsas, and vegetable platters. The roots can sometimes grow to be quite large, although when they exceed the size of two fists, they begin to convert the sugars that give jicama its sweet flavor into starches, making the root somewhat woody to the taste. Jicama is actually a legume, and it grows on vines that may reach 20 feet (six meters) in length. The vines tend to hug the ground, terminating in tubers that may grow up to 50 pounds (22 kilograms) in size, although the majority of jicama roots sent to market are approximately three to four pounds (1.3-2 kilograms) in weight. Before eating, the coarse brown outer layer of the jicama should be peeled to reveal the white inside. When choosing jicama at the store, look for medium sized, firm tubers with dry roots. Do not purchase jicama that has wet or soft spots, which may indicate rot, and don't be drawn to overlarge examples of the tuber, because they may not be as flavorful. Jicama will keep under refrigeration for up to two weeks. Jicama is excellent raw and is sometimes eaten plain. It can also be used as a substitute for Water chestnut in Chinese dishes, in which case it should be thrown in right before serving. Jicama also appears in stews, juiced drinks, stuffings, and a variety of other recipes. In addition to having a unique flavor and texture, jicama takes flavor well, making it well suited to culinary experimentation. Jicama is a great source of Vitamin c and is fat free—making it a superb on-the-go snack. Jicama grows best in warm, dry climates. It can be planted and grown year round, although tubers form better during the winter time. Jicama plants sprouted in the late spring tend to produce extremely robust tubers by the winter, while jicama planted in the summer produces the most flavorful tubers, although they are typically somewhat smaller. Jicama prefers full sun and moderate rainfall, and it is subject to frost damage, making it a poor choice for northern climates. In addition, jicama produces a natural insecticide in the above ground vine, meaning that the plant protects itself from harmful pests. -

I'm so glad Dylan is better. That's interesting about the medicine making him act crazy. My son took an antibiotic once that made him hallucinate. He was only a year old, but he was looking up at the ceiling and acting really scared for a while. He didn't sleep hardly any for days. I made sure the doctor wrote down which antibiotic, so he wouldn't get it again. I am ready to start back up tomorrow. I still have plenty of fresh veggies and fruit. Speaking of not finding groceries, I've looked at every grocery store in my town for Jicama. Wal-mart used to carry it, but I haven't seen it the past few times I've been. I don't know if it's seasonal or what. Anyway, hope you have a good week as well. -

Hi Helen! Welcome to LBT! Congratulations on your upcoming surgery, it will be here before you know it! It's good that your not nervous. I was a nervous wreck, lol. Anyway, it's nice to meet you and good luck to you. Keep us updated on your surgery! -
Hi mstars and welcome to LBT! I had surgery 9-20-07 and I was nauseated for an entire week after my surgery. I never threw up but I came close many times. I think I was dehydrated. As far as getting in the protein, I did the best I could but I wasn't getting in 60 grams for at least a few weeks. I would say just drink what you can and just keep sipping. Are you able to get down liquids pretty well?

When did your period come back?
georgia girl replied to MrsFlipFlops's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
MrsFlipFlops Several years ago I lost about 50 lbs doing the Atkins diet. I went from 301 to 250. Once I lost down to about 260, I started having regular periods again. Of course I gained all the weight I lost back plus more. My periods starting becoming irregular again. I would only have one every few months. I was actually on my period the day of my surgery (how embarrassing, right?). Since I've been banded, I've had a period every month. I guess just losing that little bit in the beginning made all the difference. I weighed 330 when I started my pre-op diet, two weeks before my surgery. I probably lost about 15 lbs the first week after surgery. And then pretty consistently ever since. I know it's different for everyone, but just losing that little bit helped me tremendously. Good luck to you and hope everything works out for you. -

I thought I heard somewhere that there was going to be a contestant who had Gastric Bypass that failed. Maybe I dreamed it, but I could swear I saw it on a commercial or something? Anyone else remember hearing that?

Don't mother's hold their babies anymore?
georgia girl replied to newhope4me's topic in Rants & Raves
DH and I are trying as hard as we can to put back money each month so we can pay off our bills early and start saving for a house. I am currently taking some online classes to be a medical transcriptionist, so I can work from home. It will be a while before I finish, but I look forward to the extra income. Hmmmm....tips to share? I would have to say hidden storage has been a life saver. We do have a little shed in the backyard that we can store our big items in but it's all the little junk that I have trouble storing. I have several decorative trunk-like items that I have collected over the years that I use for hidden storage. It's great for things like baby toys, arts and craft supplies, or any other decorative items that I don't have room to display right now. I've even seen storage ottomans. In our laundry room, I have a very inexpensive fold-out table. I filled up all the big plastic totes that I've accumulated through the years (with my son's clothes that he has outgrown and other stuff too) and put them underneath the table and hid them by putting an inexpensive table cloth over the table. It hides all the totes and gives me more room for storage. Hidden storage really does help make my house "look" like I have more room than I actually do. The worst thing I have trouble with is my kitchen. It is really tiny and I don't have much cabinet space for dishes, pots and pans, and food items. I am thinking of getting one of those pot racks that hang from the ceiling. Then I could hang my pots on that and have more room for the other stuff. I've had trouble finding one in my price range though, so maybe I'll come across one that's affordable soon. That's all I can think of for now, but I'll keep thinking on it and see what else I can come up with. I wish you and your family the best during your move. It can be frustrating at times, but I've learned how to make it work over the years and I'm sure you will too. -

We also rent a small cottage-like home. We chose that route because it is much more affordable for us to rent right now. It used to really bother me that we were living somewhere that wasn't really "ours", but I have since overcome that feeling and I'm very content with where we are. It will probably be many years before we are able to buy or build our own home. Anyway, good luck with selling your house! -
Guiding Light (US Soapopera) just started a storyline with the lapband
georgia girl replied to TheGh0st's topic in The Lounge
I watched one of the online shows, the one where she goes to the doctor (I think it was the 10th's show). Very interesting to me. I may have to watch it now just to see what happens. That's all I need, another soap opera to watch, lol. My curiosity has gotten the best of me, so I'm sure I will tune in to it. -

Isn't that being judgemental? My DH works his a$$ off so I can stay at home with our son. There are some weeks, financially, we cut it very close. We've made a lot of sacrifices to make this work. And No, we do not get any kind of government subsidy that is paid for by you or anyone else. However, I don't agree that every mother/father should stay home with their child until they start school. For some parents, it's just not possible and I totally respect that. Being a stay at home mom or dad, isn't for everyone. You know, when I was in school and people would ask me what I wanted to be when I "grew up", my answer was "a stay a home mom". It's always been my dream, I never really had any other career goals for myself. After High School, I worked with children at the YMCA and I always knew that being a SAHM was for me. Just as college isn't for everyone, being a stay at home parent isn't for everyone either. Ultimately, it's a personal choice that involves a lot of factors. -

I'm glad you got your book! It really makes sense to me too! My leg is a little better, I think. I don't want to gross you out by the details, but I pretty much have a hole in my leg. I wasn't expecting it to look this way, it freaks me out a little. I still have a hard knot around the hole in my leg though. I go back to the doctor in the morning, so i hope to have a good report from him. I've got to get back on track this week too! I haven't done so well with my food choices this weekend. It's hard to make good choices when you are feeling bad and down (okay.....pity party is over). Anyway, I'm going to start hard again tomorrow. I really need to make the right food choices because I won't be exercising for a little while. Is your kiddo better? -

It must be too late because when I voted, it came up on the main screen. I looked as well and didn't see anything about it.

Ok, I've to ask, which character did you go to school with? I used to watch Passions a little here and there because it came on right after Days of Our Lives. I'm just curious because I am pretty familiar with most of the characters. -
Don't mother's hold their babies anymore?
georgia girl replied to newhope4me's topic in Rants & Raves
I used baby carrier a lot when my son was a baby. I have been a SAHM since my son was born and he was held a lot at home. My son tended to fall asleep while riding in the car, so it was much easier to take out the carrier rather than wake him up by unbuckling him. Of course, if my son was got fussy or upset, I would take him out, but if he was content, I left him in the carrier while running errands. I don't see any harm in it as long as the parent isn't putting the baby in it all the time, like at home all day long also. There is a big difference in depriving a baby of a mother's touch and carrying a baby in a car seat to run errands IMO. -

Brina Don't worry, I don't weigh my food BUT I do occasionally put my leftovers (mostly soups and chili) in individual tiny containers and freeze them so I can just grab one when needed. It's very convenient. I don't weight my food because 1.) I don't have a food scale. 2.) It would take up too much time. 3.) I just don't want to. Thanks for the food peddling idea! I'm trying to save up for plastic surgery and I could probably make a killing peddling food. I'll be in touch with ya'll, okay! -

I've never seen the show, but I think it's great that they are working her real life situation into the show. I just hope it's not made to poke fun at the lapband. Hopefully they will show the good and the sometimes bad parts of the journey. I do like soap operas though. I watch General Hospital and Days of Our Lives. I get the soap channel so I can just surf the guide to see when it airs.
