Ann - 43 lbs!! That's fantastic! Good job. I can tell you're going to absolutely rock-it on the band! 43 lbs is no easy feat on your own. Jill - Welcome to the group! I'm just curious if anyone is nervous about being newly banded for Thanksgiving. I didn't even think much about it since DH and I do Thanksgiving together alone. We had guests over in 2005, but none last year and none this year. Is anyone having to go to a family or large group get-together right after getting banded? I would be so self conscious if everybody didn't know...or it would be a hello, goodbye thing.

You guys are doing so well. I'm proud. I'm so nervous! I start up on liquids on the 6th or 7th. DH and I are having our big Thanksgiving dinner this Sunday since I'll be on liquids when the date rolls around. We don't have Thanksgiving with any other family, so it works out well. I've been living it up with food. I didn't realize how much I TRULY did restrain myself before. Now that I've given myself permission to eat all the things I'd like to stay away from after the band (or at least in VERY limited quantities), I'm kind of scared of myself. LOL But the thing is, I'm kind of looking forward to kicking all of this stuff to the curb! DH and I are going to have a cleaning the cupboards party (he wants to lose weight, too - about 30 lbs). So...on a liquids diet, did your doctor TELL you what to drink (ie, Protein shakes, broth, etc), or did he just say as long as it was a low-carb liquid (obviously not sodas or the like) and you were getting in enough protein, it was up to you?

LOL...I guess I just keep looking. Understanding the Different Types of Adjustable Gastric Bands Kind of seems to me that with the Lap-Band, you'd have less chance of erosion because of the "cushion" they mentioned. This is PURELY speculation - please don't take this as gospel to make your decision. You could look around for success rates vs complications for these two bands. Just have to google around for it.
-
You can also go to Midband : gastroplastie, anneau gastrique, obésité morbide, coelioscopie and click "english" and do your own research about that particular band.

I don't know details, but found this while I happened to be browsing on wikipedia: Don't know if that helps, or not.

Happy Birthday! Oh, boy, do I look forward to the day when I don't hate my driver's license photo - I dread it everytime somebody asks for my I.D. And it'll be nice one of these days to not be lying about my weight on there. Ugh.

You're doing so great! Cute pic!

I need to hear from you :-/ ..debating if surgery is right thing or not.
steph_co replied to Whatnow24's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Whatnow - I think what did it for me was when I went to a patient seminar and heard the statistic that there is a 95% chance of regaining all of your lost weight if you just use diet and exercise alone. It sure feels true to me with all the diets and exercising that I have tried to no avail. I honestly feel that I need something to KEEP me accountable to myself and I feel that the band is it. Financing for out-of-pocket
steph_co replied to Shandymae's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Whichever Dr you go for should be able to tell you which financing they accept (Care Credit, Capital One, surgeryloans.com, etc). I had to go through surgeryloans.com to get half of my surgery financed. I'm not pleased with the terms, but I'll just deal with it because the band is worth it to me. I went to a patient seminar on the first Wednesday of October, called their office around the 12th and got an initial consultation on the 18th and got my surgery scheduled that day for less than a month later (11-15). So it goes pretty fast for self-payers. I like that! -
I'm really anal - I cleaned it up a bit and put Cherlita as being only on the 27th (that was her stated date). Good luck to everybody! It's getting so close! Try Target. I know it's not glamorous. But I had resigned myself to wearing a bra that was too tight for me on the band until I really started LOOKING for something bigger. I found my size - 42AA - at Target. They are cute bras - I like them. I look forward to when I can get a smaller band size. -
For the first 2 weeks of my month, I only did the Basic Workout (15-min workout) once per day. You can still get great results from just that. I will add, though, that I did two of the exercises from their website: Try before you buy - Articles & Exercises . I did the stomach one and the legs. The stomach one is awesome - I love that one. That's one that I'll most likely get back into before the band.
-
I didn't even think of that! LOL It should be the same for me, too. That is a really cool thought - thanks for bringing it up. I can sit and obsess all day about the things that'll be different as I get smaller. I love thinking about it!

I wondered the same thing, but looking at all the dates on the most recent posts, I'm going to have to say no. LOL The board is also now running really slow for me. :car:

Anyone have a husband who is nonsupportive?
steph_co replied to munchkin392's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm sorry, but alcoholism is nothing like being obese. Yes, food can be an addiction, but like you said - you HAVE to eat to survive. You could go your whole life and never have a drink and be just fine. The biggest thing I heard from my surgeon at the patient seminar that really pushed me in the direction of getting the band was that something like 98% of people over a certain weight that try diet and exercise will gain the weight back and then some. One thing I've noticed about A LOT of people that are unsupportive about this kind of thing is that they are actually afraid. Afraid of whatever their biggest problem may be with it. For some, it might be that their spouse could die or get sick from the procedure. He might be afraid that you'll change...like maybe you won't love him as much once you get skinny. He might be afraid if he has heard all the stats on divorce rates amongst patients after bariatric surgery. Has he done any research on the procedure himself? Have him watch one of the live procedures in the FAQ section on here. Show him some of the literature. If necessary, have him talk to your surgeon's office with any questions he might have. He might just be embarrassed to admit he's afraid. If it's the other stuff, then maybe spend more time with him. Plan a date night. Write him a letter letting him know how much you love him (like maybe a list of the reasons you fell in love with him). Seriously - people are unsupportive because they're afraid. I wouldn't say that he's doing it because he doesn't care - it's probably because he DOES care, he just doesn't understand some part of the equation. I hope things can get worked out. -

Slime In My Sleep?? Yuk!!!
steph_co replied to bigbaby's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know I've read on here from people that you shouldn't lie down for awhile (an hour? 2 hours?) after eating. I can't remember the exact amount of time. But I'd guess that's the problem - you're lying down too soon after eating. I'm just going off of what I've read here. Never really researched it. Maybe somebody else will see this that is more knowledgeable than me. -
This can't be happening!!
steph_co replied to Saintluver's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LOL! DH has had to pass stones before. He actually ended up at the ER because he almost passed out from the pain (and he's the type to pretend he's not feeling anything). I'm sorry to hear about your kidney stone, Saint Luvr. I haven't had to deal with that, but just from watching DH, I hurt for you. -
I wondered about this, myself. I asked in the "at goal" forum and didn't get much response. I guess I worded it wrong. LOL Anyhow - I worry that people who knew me when I lived in Utah will be kind of snobby about it. DH is my closest friend here, so that doesn't really matter here. He's fully supportive and plans to lose some weight along with me. I don't plan on telling anybody in my family other than *maybe* my mother. My siblings I could see doing the tight-lipped disapproval. I'd rather not deal with it. My mother told me when I was in my teens that if I ever wanted to do plastic surgery, she supported me to do whatever it took for me to be happy with myself (no - she wasn't hinting, she just had seen people ostracized by their own families - she was very open about things like that). I'm a pretty hardcore homebody, so I guess I don't have to worry too much about the people I hang out with rejecting me. It's more the people I grew up with that knew me chubbier than I will end up that I wonder how they'll react when they see me.

I go in for a nutrition class on Nov 6th and they'll be giving me the parameters for the liquid diet at that time...to start the next day, I would assume. So it'll be like a 9-day liquid diet.

She asked about any mental health issues (depression) and any acting out, compulsive behavior, etc. She asked me about my support system (which is mainly my husband). Asked me if I had any history of eating disorders. Asked about my expectations for the band. Asked about my fears/reservations with the band. Asked me to name some non-destructive coping mechanisms and my homework is to find more. I didn't have to take a test. But she gave me several handouts. One that can help me differentiate between head hunger and real hunger, one with a list of things I can do instead of eat... I can't remember what else. But it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I was just honest and I have a good handle on things, so it went smoothly and I got a thumbs up for the surgery from her.
