My dad's against vsg because of his faith?
NYCkindofgirl replied to Chynna's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Since this is the truth, I tell them, "I have fasted and prayed and this was the solution that the Lord sent to me. He gifted my medical doctor with the knowledge to send me to a surgeon with the skills to help me." I don't believe that having this surgery does anything to lessen my faith. I don't know if that will satisfy your father, but it has helped me with other people. Have faith, once he sees you are feeling better and healthier, your father will come around. -
Okay, sounds like something to keep us focused over the summer. I'm in CW 274, goal weight 254

What Is (or Was) Holding You Back from Weight Loss Surgery?
NYCkindofgirl replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I said other. There were multiple things holding me back. First, I actually didn't mind being fat. My social life was good and my friends and family were there for me. I was however deluding myself by thinking the weight wasn't harming me. Second, I've had multiple surgeries in my like and I just didn't want another one. Lastly, and this is still on my mind, I don't know if it will make a difference long-term. I have lost in excess of 100 lbs. more than once in my life, and managed to gain it back. Not only have I gained the weight back but each time I have gained more than I lost. So, I'm cautiously optimistic and still glad that I've started the journey. -
I'm 9.5 weeks out, down 40 lbs. I went back to work after 5 weeks and started with my trainer two weeks ago. I'm feeling pretty good. Many parts that were aching before the surgery don't hurt now (back, knees). I'm breathing easier. Theater seats are more comfortable. I didn't expect any of that to true until I'd lost much more weight. I'm still surprised that I am not hungry all the time, or even some of the time. The only down-side, for me, is that since the surgery I have been more easily fatigued. I would do this again, feeling better is a great thing, breathing better is amazing!

Chewable vs gummy vitamins
NYCkindofgirl replied to Texas Moon's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My nutritionist said "no gummies". I never asked why, and purchased the Opurity Vitamins on the unjury website. They tasted pretty good, too! -
Lost only 13 pounds
NYCkindofgirl replied to ssbills's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How about taking the only out of that sentence and maybe add a exclamation mark at the end. "I lost 13 pounds in one week after surgery!" This is pretty amazing. How many weeks in your life were you able to make that statement? Try to enjoy the journey. The speed at which you lose depends on many factors, but try not to compare with other people. Good Luck! -
Bored with food choices
NYCkindofgirl replied to madwife2002's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was only on pureed food for three weeks, but I found if I poached fish (scallops, swordfish, various filets) with some seasonings (apple cider vinegar, cooking sherry, black pepper corns, bay leaves, fresh parsley, rosemary, thyme) in the Water or broth (vegetable stock) then the purees were much better tasting. For canned tuna and salmon I added a little non-fat salad dressing. I also poached chicken thighs or breasts in chicken stock with some herbs before the puree. I still like flavorful food. Start experimenting in the kitchen, I'm sure you'll find some flavors you like. -
Home Aloners who cook...what do you do with all the extra food?
NYCkindofgirl replied to blessedandfavored's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also live alone and the freezer is my friend. I cut leftovers into meal size portions and either wrap in aluminum foil or put them in single portion plastic containers. meat is a particular problem, since the butcher shop closed and the supermarkets have pre-packaged meat at about 1 lb. The fish store will still sell me 1/4 lb. of whatever I want, so with fresh fish I don't have leftovers. Let me know if you have any better ideas, please. -

Somebody... anybody HELP!
NYCkindofgirl replied to bnice597's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Before I had my surgery, just two months ago, my psychiatrist suggested that I put notes around to remind me why I wanted to do this. My notes say things like "breathing" and "walking" and "pain". All three are considerably better and I hope will continue to improve. What were your motivations to start? Remind yourself. Also whenever I have a long-term goal, I forgive myself when I make a mistake and then make a list of the things I need to do to complete the task. Good luck! -

Hurting incision and ooze
NYCkindofgirl replied to ssbills's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Apparently this doesn't happen to everyone, but we are "special". I oozed from one of the incision for about 10 days. The PA at the surgeon's office said to just kept it clean and covered until it stopped. So I did and then it did! Good luck! -
The New York Times, Saturday, June 14, 2014 had an article about the increase in this disease, caused by obesity. The good news is that the situation can be improved with weight loss and exercise. I have known that I had a "fatty liver" for many years, I guess that shows how dumb I can be. Anyway, we are both on the road to recovery!

Introductions & important question - surgery without support
NYCkindofgirl replied to efierke's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Eric, You need to look at your own motivation first. Are you doing this for the right reasons? Once you are clear on why you are having surgery, then you need to look at the timing. Is this the right time for you? When you are clear that this is the right solution at the right time you can TRY to explain it to your partner. People who have never had to lose weight or only had a small amount to lose can't really understand the frustration of dieting for the "morbidly obese". If you need to talk, please feel free to send me a PM with your phone number. I'm sure there are many people here who will be happy to help support you emotionally! -
2 months out from surgery and I cant stop eating..i know it's because I'm nervous...any words of wisdom
NYCkindofgirl replied to swtpea637's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My nutritionist called mine "Last Supper Syndrome". I was behaving as if every meal was the last I was going to eat and needed to make sure that I had some of all the foods I "loved". I actually weighed more on the day of surgery than I ever had in my life. I've been fascinated that I am not hungry and I don't miss all those foods. I wish I had understood that when I was wandering through every ethnic food in New York (and there are a lot of them). Good luck and give yourself permission to enjoy the process. -
Sometimes the leg cramps are a result of being a little dehydrated. I get them when I drink less than 64 oz. of water. I also take a magnesium supplement, but it's a powder that I mix with still more water. However, it's always a good idea to see your doctor. Each person is a little different.
