3years out with severe heartburn
Happydales replied to hopeliveshere's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had severe complications my first year. Vomiting and nauseous 24/7 after i transitioned to a regular diet after the first 2 months. I had to beg for a second opinion. He refused to refer me to the doctor i requested. I saw his partner who diagnosed me with bile Reflux immediately after doing an upper endoscopy. How the original surgeon missed that is beyond me. I had every system listed. The dr moved 4 hours away so i transfered care to a gastroenterologist. My GI gave me a script for Dicyclomine 10mg as needed. As soon as i start feeling pain that feels like a knife in my stomach i take 1 capsule. Within 5 minutes i feel like a millon bucks! The medicine doesnt have any side effects. I dont get sleepy etc with it. The pain gets so bad i cant stand up straight. I also take Prilosec 20mg and amitriptyline 10mg. My first year i was in and out of the hospial and ER for dehydration and other issues. I went from 300 pounds down to 158. Have to admit it is pretty exciting going from a size 26-28 down to a 10-12 pant and small - medium tops. I bought J Jill and Talbot swing jackets in a size 6 and 8. I am pretty excited about all the different styles i can wear tody. Hope his helped! -
I forgot to mention I eat about half as much as a normal sleeve patient. I ate two bites of spaghetti at Olive Garden and was sick all afternoon. I still cant eat tomatoes. Things i used to love like BBQ and it makes me sick still today. Its so weird the things my body will and won't tolerate.

I went a year of throwing up daily, not getting my protein in, severe nauseousness literally 24/7. I basically lived in my bed the first year. At one point i didnt eat for 5 weeks, in and out of the er for fluids, etc. I wont bore you with all the details. I wanted a second opinion but my surgeon was too busy to call or email the surgeon at Washington University Barnes Hospital. The only thing he would do was refer me o his partner, imagine that!!! I am sicker than sick and it ook his office six weeks to get my records to his partnes office. My surgeons office was in the hospital the other dr was located in the Drs office building across he complex. After numerous phones calls I actually had to talk with the office manager. It just added insult to injury. Or whatever the that saying is. LOL well two months after the referral I get to see the new sugeon. He schedules me for an endoscopy and a very nasty nuclear medicine procedure. I had to eat or raher gag down cold radioactive eggs in ten minutes or I would have to start over. Laying in the machine for an hour plus was a snap. He diagnosed me with Bile Reflux immediately after the upper endoscopy. After starting medicine and physical theapy to relearn how to walk it took another three months to feel human. The oral anti nausea medicine did not work for me. The only thing that would give me any relief was the IV meds. That first year was just crazy. But after the rocky start i am very happy to report my third anniversary is coming up in march, total loss one hundred seventy two pounds!!! My health is pretty stable at this point. I walk four miles in an hour. Went from a size twenty six twenty eight down to a ten twelve pant and six eight top. I am so mad at my ipad tonight. The number keyboard won't pull up so i had to type the numbers out. LOL I really hope your drs determine what is wrong with.

Continued....and additional radiation. The first year after my sleeve surgery was worse than all my cancer treatments put together. And to top it off I had drs telling me they didnt believe my complaints. I felt vindicated after my oringinal drs partner figured out what was wrong with me! That dr has since moved out of town and I see a GI specialist for my follow up.

If you dont mind telling us what the diagnosis is I would be interested in knowing if it is what I had? I was diagnosised with Bile Reflux at the 1 year mark after not eating for 5 weeks, throwing everything up daily and being nauseous 24/7 . My surgeon, Dr Minkin told me I was just fine. I looked like death warmed over at that point. I told him I wanted to be referred for a second opinion to Barnes Hosp. He refused stating he was far too busy to send an email or call the surgeon. The Barnes surg would not see me unless he talked with Minkin. He would only refer me to his partner. After Dr Scott did an upper endoscopy I was told I had Bile Reflux. I was put on medications (4) and very slowly began getting better. After living in bed for almost a year my muscled atrophied. I was in physical therapy for 3 months before I started gaining my strength back. I lost a total of 170 but have gained 10 pounds back. Went fron 330 to 170. My surg was 3-19-2014. Now that I have been reálitively healthly for awhile it really feels good. Here is an idea of what my first year was like . I had metastatic cancer at 16 with 3 years of aggressive radiation treatments. In 1999 had a recurrance

Sleeve to gastric bypass HELP SO TERRIFIED
Happydales replied to 1maryreigel's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
PS... Had to beg my primary care physician to order home IV therapy for anti nausea meds. The oral and sopposatory meds didnt touch the nausea. The doctors thought I was lying to them. It just floored me that people thought I wasn't as sick as I was. Message me anytime if you want to talk. Take care. Laurie -
Sleeve to gastric bypass HELP SO TERRIFIED
Happydales replied to 1maryreigel's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My first after my sleeve surgery was identical to your. I threw up everyday, nausea 24/7, in and out of the ER and hosp, i had to finally ask for a second opinion because my surgeon told me i was just fine. In the beginning i didnt eat anything for 5 weeks. I had been on the strongest antinausea meds and they didnt do anything.. My new dr did an endoscopy and diagnosed me with bile reflux. After starting the medicine it took about 3-4 months before i was feeling normal. My bariatric surg moved away so im now followed by a GI surgeon. I have been doing pretty good. Please let us know how you are doing. I would get a 2nd opinion asap. For myself having the other surg was not guarantee it would fix the bile reflux. In reality it would open me up to a host of other issues. We are about a year apart in age. Prior to surg I was 330 lbs now I weigh 165-170. I feel pretty good after losing 160 pounds. Many of the medical issues I had prior to surg are gone. So there have been positive changes. But I literally thought I was dying too. I had to go to physical therapy to get strength back to start walking again. I hope you get better soon. Laurie -
Anyone have to deal with Pancreatitis
Happydales replied to dede_mont's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I threw up and had nausea 24/7 for almost my entire year. I completely feel your pain. I wdid awesome my first 2 mosths then all hell broke loose. After being in and out of hospitals and being sick everyday i askd to be referred to another surgeon. The mew dr did an upper endoscopy and immediately dx me with bile reflux. I was stared on 3 medicines and slowly began getting better. But it took about 3-4 months before really feeling human again. They suggested doing another surg but I was not sold on that. Hope you feel better soon. After not eating for 5 weeks I pretty much lived on frozen pops and Water for months. It took everything i had to gag down Protein drinks. I've been healthy for almost 2 years and have lost 160 pounds, i prior to surg i weighed 330. -
4yrs out complication needing sleeve to bypass :(
Happydales replied to marie110's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had severe complications after my sleeve in march 2014. I finally got my surg to refer me to hos partner. I wanted to see someone else but he refused and would only allow me to see his partner.he did one endoscopy and diagnosed me with bile refux. I had every symptom i found online. I was told i needed to have a bypass as well. After. Reading about this procedure I decided I would not have it done. I decidd to see a GI specialist. She is awesome! She prescribed me Dicyclomine 10 mg capsule . I call that my rescue medicine! LOL i literally can feel like i have a knife in my stomach and cant move. The almost paralyzes me. Within 5 minutes the pain is gone and im back to my happy self again. The GI Spc told me even if I have tbe bypass surg I could still have the same issues. I decided to continue following up with the GI dr vs the baraectrc surg. My surg moved about 3 hours away so it made sense just to stat with the GI dr. No way was I going back to Dr Minkin. The medicine I take just works on my stomach. You dont feel goofy like you would taking a muscle relaxany. -
Hi everyone! I'm in St Louis near 55/270 in Southi County. Would anyone like to up at St Louis Bread Company? I was sleeved on March 19, 2014. Had severe complications after surgery for the first year. It was living hell. But I must say now that I'm on the other side of all of it I'm happy I had the surgery. I went from 330 to 185, so 145 pound weight loss isn't too shabby. I want to get down to 150 to 155 ish before I stop losing. That might be too ambitious but I'm still going to give it a try! My doctor told me as long as I continue to workout at the gym it would be realistic.

Happydales replied to losinghope15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was as sick as you for almost a year.they have told me the fix it is gastric bypass SURG with a bowel resection (?) I think that is correct.i don't want the bypass SURG either. Do yu mind sending me a message with your phone number? It would be easier to explain everything. Or we could talk on skype. My skype name is happydales2 Imam so sorry you arena ing so many issues . I was shocked at how I was really left on my own. My mom didn't think I was really sick.i lived in my bed for 9 months. Lost muscle mass and fell 6 times in my house because I didn't have the strength. It's a miracle I didn't break any bones falling. Please contact me and we can talk privately. Laurie -
Gastric sleeve , I'm so sick
Happydales replied to MindySue's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my sleeve 3-19-14. Was fine the first 2 months. Then I started throwing up everything I ate and drank. Was nausous 24/7, slept with a big plastic bowl because I couldn't get to the bathroom fast enough. Oral anti nausea meds did not work. The only thing thit would give me relief was IV anti nausea meds. I was in and out of the hosp/ER. My SURG said there wasn't anything wrong with me. I found out over the phone he was referring me to his partner. It took them 6 weeks to get my records to his office so I could schedule an appt. I begged my primary to order home iv therapy for me.after a week of continuous medicine the vomiting stopped. I throw up once in a blue moon now. The new Dr did an endoscopy and told me I had Bile Reflux. I already had damage to my esophagus and the lining of my stomach. I was put in 3 meds and told I would need gastric bypass with a bowel resection to fix it. I'm not having another surg until I get a second opinion. There is a well respected bariactric surg at Barnes hospital, Dr Eagon who I want to see. He might have a less invasive way to treat this. I have lost 135 pounds, 330 to 195. My cardiologist released me because my leaky valve repaired itself with my west loss. My cardiologist was after me for 2 years to have this done. I'm limited on foods I can eat. I literally spent 8 months living in my bed. I lost a ton of muscle mass and could barely walk. Now I can walk a mile in 15 minutes so I have diff entry gotten better. But I know I have more treatment/surg down the road to correct the issue. -
My surgeon won't operate because I complained
Happydales replied to greensleeve's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I have to have a physician referral since I've already had the Sleeve procedure & need a 2nd procedure. My current surg wants me to have gastric bypass done. I won't have it done until I can get a second opinion. The doctor I want to see for the 2nd opinion requires it. Since I've already had one surg it complicates things. Usually surgeons will not take over other drs patients. Laurie -

I had my surgery by Dr Minkin 3-19-2014. I had severe complications after. he misdiagnosed me and referred me to dr Scott. I wanted to be referred to Dr Egan at Barnes. Dr Minkinsaid he was too busy to call or write an email to refer me. The only dr he would send me to was dr Scott. I threw up daily had nausea 24/7, didn't eat for 5 weeks and lived in bed for about 7 months. It was horrible I literally felt like I was dying. I lost 130. I'm doing good now but dr Scott wants me to have a gastric bypass done to fix the bile reflux. I don't want to have the surgery because I got so sick after the sleeve. I want a second opinion by dr Egan but dr Scott won't refer me to Barnes either. I think their practice has major problems. -
Need a vet buddy in MO for a newly sleeved Nurse...Help
Happydales replied to time4change15's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi, I'm in the St. Louis area in Missouri. I had my sleeve on March 19, 2014. I'm down 130 pounds. I want to lose another 30 to 40 pounds. I'm walking 4 miles a day 3 to 4 times a week and going to the Y. I had a terrible start with my surgery. I was literally sick in bed for about 7 months throwing up and nausea 24/7. I was finally diagnosed with Bile Reflux after being referred to a different surgeon. He wants me to have gastric bypass SURG to correct the Bile Reflux. As sick as I got with the sleeve procedure I'm not wanting to haven the other Surg. I take 3 stomach medicines a day and I'm doing pretty good. I love being active now and can walk a 20 minute mile. I would love to talk with you. If we are close maybe we could get together and walk. There are a lot of foods I can't eat or I get sick. It's been so exciting getting a new wardrobe and giving away the clothes that don't fit me. laurie -

Hi girls, I live in at Louis too. My surgery was on March 19, 2014. So far I've lost 62.5. Would anyone be interested in getting together for lunch? We could go to Bread Co. Laurie

Hi, I've lost 62.5 pounds. Last week I only lost 2.5 because I'm having issues with getting my Protein in. The nut told me when I increase the protein I'll start losing more. My avg per week was 5 pounds. Laurie

Happydales replied to Mzdiva3's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I e been operated on numerous times and never have been awake for the breathing tube. How awful I can't imagine that. I'll keep you in my prayers. I can see how that would traumatise you. Laurie -

My surgery was at 3:30 on Wednesday March 19, 2014. I didn't have anything to drink or eat from midnight Tuesday until after my Upper GI after SURG on Thursday at 11:00 am. I threw up in Radiology getting my test. I didn't eat much in the hospital due to being nauseous and throwing up.it is a process. All drs are different and do their own things. Laurie -
My surgery was on March 19, 2014. I am generally nauseous all the time and don't like to eat either. I'm in touch with the nut and dr. I would really like to know when this will go away? Thank you. Laurie

I had thyroid cancer at 16 and 3 years of annual inpatient radiation treatments. They completely removed my thyroid. I had a recurrence at 35 and had another inpatient radiation treatment. My current dose is .224, I take 2 .112's a day. I haven't been tested since my sleeve surgery on March 19, 2014. I'm going to call my dr to see if I should gets labs done. Never occurred to me my weight loss might effect the dose. Thanks for sharing. Laurie
