  1. Also he gave me a chance to ask any questions I might have. I had already researched which method I wanted and he agreed it was the best choice for me.

    February

It has been a big relief. I was on crutches before and in constant pain. I am 8 weeks post op and only use a cane when I am out. There are two common methods of doing it ( anterior and posterior, lateral is used minimally it seems.) anterior is easier to recover from because there are no cut muscles. I had posterior and was non weight bearing for 4 weeks after. Pain only bad for first week and even then not terrible but I have a high pain tolerance. I am probably going to need the other done before long. I was hoping to have RNY first but I was in to much pain. I am hoping after the hip this one will feel easy.

    February

Peeking my head in here.....to say hello and join the Feburary club. After 8 months and one delay due to hip replacement surgery I got my date ...squeezing in on Feb 27 th! Only thing left to do is pre op blood work on the 17 th. Pre op diet is only one day but I need to start withdrawing from sugar and caffeine. It will be fun to follow everyone here.
  4. Good for you. I just got booked for the 27th. Insurance approval came back in less than 24 hours. This all started for me in May but overall it has gone by quick.

    February surgeries

Add me to the February list..27 th! After beginning this process in May it's hard to believe it is finally coming to fruition.
  6. Still to broad range to give you a good answer. If your insurance doesn't require any time frames for weighins it would the be based on your surgeons requirements. ( my surgeon only requires 1 day of liquid diet and schedules people typically in 2 weeks once they have insurance approval. I have read others that surgeons scheduled months out.)
  7. Totally depends on your insurance requirements. Some have been really short and others up to a year. Mine required 6 month overview with monthly weigh ins and a net loss ...among other things. Call your company and get a copy of their requirements.

    50's

Great to hear all the successes. I am 54 and started the process for RNY in May of 2014. I have had hip issues for years and finally had to have hip replacement in December. I am mending well and hoping to have RNY in either February or March. It was all delayed because of the hip surgery. Orthropedics surgeon will release me next week and all my pre op requirements are completed. I had lost 130 pounds before my hip went and gained 80 of it back...dealing with physical limitations by eating. Now with the new hip I am hoping the surgery will help me get back to the life I was enjoying before I regained the 80 pounds.

    Aetna last visit today

Good luck to ya! Icompleted mine last of December. I still booked a January with my PCP as I don't want any glitches. I gained 4 pounds ( had hip replacement surgery a few weeks before weigh in) but the case manager at my surgeon told me that would not be an issue. I know Aetna says " net loss" but I was still worried so that was good to hear. They know Aetna so well thankfully. Now I have to wait to get released by my Orthropedics surgeon before the Bariatric surgeon will move forward.
  10. Thanks ..I finally made the calls yesterday to get the last few things taken care of.
  11. I finally finished 7 months of requirements but just can't get motivated to send in paperwork the office needs. Reasons.....not sure of priority: 1. Just had hip replacement last month and I really just find the idea of another surgery utterly exhausting. ( still on crutches and limited.) 2. Mother in law came to stay with us in July after a fall. She is waiting on an apartment to come open and I thought she would be gone by now. She is a prejudice, self righteous, religious zealot, who knows everything and does everything perfect. No way do I want her to know anything about the surgery. ( I am already hearing how so and so healed quicker from the hip surgery than i have.) 3. Nervousness about negative consequences of the surgery. This is actually minimal but it is there. 4. Last weigh ins were right before and 3 weeks after surgery and I gained 4 pounds although overall I lost 18. Worried about insurance denying me even though my doc was going to explain about me being immobile, swollen etc. Just typing this I realize # 2 bothers me the worse. Anyone capable of giving me a big swift kick in the butt!
  12. No test. He primarily focused on my coping tools, feelings about changing life and strengths.

    Aetna insurance approval steps?

You need to call Aetna directly. There is some variation within Aetna policies but non of that was close to what I had to do. I did not even need a referral from my PCP to see my surgeon. I did need to see my PCP monthly for weigh ins and " weight management consults". There are other requirements as well but like I said it may vary so consult your provider.

    Newbie Here ????

Contact your insurance company and ask them to email/mail you the specific requirements for bariactric surgery. They have written guidelines. I was able to find mine online but this may not be the case for all insurances.
  15. I am hoping for December but it may be stretched to January. I know it will be here before I know it!
  16. Have you talked to your family? If you haven't then do do in no demanding nonaggresdive manner. If they aren't willing to change take a deep breath and remind yourself that you are in control of you. And although their support would be great you are the one that has to take responsibility to change..not them. You could eat in another room, sit with your back to the TV, wear ear plugs...there are several options.
  17. Your doctor is working FOR you not the other way around. You have to tell yourself you are worthy and able to be your best advocate. Do your research before you go. Be firm/ assertive. I went to bariactric surgeons orientation before my PCP. This was free and did require a referral. I was already sure I wanted the surgery and simply needed my PCP to do their job and provide my monthly weigh ins and complete required paperwork. I simply told them I was pursuing bariactric surgery. My PCP has been very supportive. If she had not been I would have switched doctors.

    I was denied!

This has been interesting and confusing to read. I know Aetna as different types of policies but I thought all their plans called for a net loss. I made the mistake of losing 10 pounds before my first PCP visit. I have had 5 weigh ins since with all being small losses..which is what I wanted. Unfortunately I am having hip replacement surgery next month before final weigh in. It is highly doubtful I will have any loss due to enormous swelling as well as weight of metal implant. My pcp assured me this could be justified for insurance compliance" . Due to the surgery my initial date will be set back for at least two months so I will end up with a total of 9 weigh ins. Crossing my fingers

    Isn't it Ironic

Sorry for giggling a bit but that simply sounds like something that would happen to me.
  20. Congrats on getting your date . I was hoping to have aDecember date but instead I am having hip replaced on dec. 3rd. I hope to get RNY mid to late January now. Not sure how long a wait between I ill need but I would not want to have less than 6 weeks.

    Aetna requirement

That is my understanding as well.

    And now there is one!

Woohoo December people! Although I just got recommended for a full hip replacement so that will likely push me back but hopefully not too long. I would love to have the RNY first but can barely walk now.
  23. Exactly. Mine went undiagnosed for probably 2 years. I had terrible joint pain that made my hands nearly useless and knees horrible. Started on medication ( no side affects) and slowly the joint pain improved but no impact on weight.
