Couch to 5K Anyone want to start with me ?
wnt2lose replied to coltonwade's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I love to run now! This morning I ran for 25 minutes straight. Then walked for 2 minutes then ran to complete my 3.1 mile route in 35 minutes! I remember when it was a struggle to run for 90 seconds! It is amazing how easy this couch to 5k is! I took a couple days off from running, so I was worried that I wouldn't make it for 25 minutes, but I did it! -
No need to rush for a fill unless you really need one. I was banded on Nov. 5th. I didn't get my first and only fill until the middle of Feburary ( I could've waited longer but I felt like I HAD to) I am happy with my weight loss and yes, I do wish I could lose as fast as I did at first, but I can eat anything, but just much smaller portions. Isn't that what the band is supposed to do? I do feel some restriction and other than getting the tight golf ball feeling, I have never PB'd yet. Now that I am exercising like crazy I like that I can pick and choose what I put into my body to fuel it properly. Don't stress yourself over fills. I have come to learn that you don't have to go by a certain schedule. Listen to your body and your band and get a fill when you feel like you aren't losing consistenly or tend to eat more and start gaining weight. My Dr. has never pressured me into getting fills, he tells me when I feel ready is when I should call. I won't see him until July 2 so I'll have to see how I am feeling if I should get a fill or not.

Thanks for helping to inspire me to train for a triathelon as well! I finally made it all the way through the couch to 5k program and can now run 5K without walking! Last night I rode 10 miles on my bike. Like I said, now I just need to get swimming! I also have a mountain bike, although it is pretty light. Kat W thanks for the link to beginner Triathlete! I've been hooked since! Good luck to everyone. Whosyadaddy, when is your tri? Keep us posted on your progress!

What wonderful tips and advice from everyone! I am even more motivated to get started. I even dusted off my bike tonight and rode my 5k route. Baby steps right? Now to get started on the swimming. Soon our neighborhood pool will be open and they have lap swimming during the noon hour so I will need to start doing that. I can do this!

I've been hovering around 210 for the last month. Imagine my surprise this morning when I stepped on the scale and it said 208.8! I should probably have a fill, but I have been exercising like crazy lately and a little extra food is helping fuel my body. I'm trying really hard to eat healthy so something must be working. I try to stick between 1,000 and 1,200 calories a day. -
Way to go! Keep on going! I too, was once 290 lbs. I am now 210. It does get much easier once the weight starts falling off! Today I walked 5 minutes, ran 12, walked 2, ran 14, then walked 4. (3.2 miles) I remember when I first started the couch 5k and struggling to run for 60 seconds! I'm even looking for 5k's and other races to compete in this summer!
-
To think that a year ago I wouldn't even think about replying to a tri-athelon topic and even consider participating in one is crazy! Here's my story. I used to weigh 290lbs. When I weighed that much I was still -pretty active (if you call slow-pitch softball and rec volleyball active.:wink2: ) Now thanks to my lap-band and losing 80 lbs (I still have quite a bit to go) anyway I have been doing the couch to 5K and I really like it! tonight I ran/walked 3.2 miles in 37.05. OK enough of my rambling. I was searching for some 5k races around my hometown last night and came across a sprint tri. (300m swim, 11 mile bike, 5k run) This event will take place Sept. 6 ( 4 days after I turn 43!) I feel the same way about the swim, I think I would be able to handle the bike and run, it's just I haven't been in a swimming pool actully swimming laps for at least 10 yrs. Does this sound like an achievable goal? Or should I just wait a year? How should I go about training for this? Of couse when I told dh, he just laughed, which makes me want to do this more! where can I find training guides to help me prepare for a triathelon. Hope I didn't hog too much of your thread.

Where Oh Where have all the Nymphs Been?
wnt2lose replied to hollyberries's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I've really enjoyed reading all of your responses. Glad this thread got started. I was just reflecting on my wieght loss the other day. It dawned on me that I have been on this journey for 6 mos! I have been quite frustrated the last few months. The scale moves very slowly. I've gained and lost the same 5 lbs for two months! I've finally broken my plateu, but I was hoping to be under 200lbs. by this point. I have 2 cc's in a 4cc band. I don't feel a lot of restriction. I can eat just about anything. chicken, lettuce, bread, etc., just much smaller portions. I should probaby have a fill, but in a way I like where I am. Especially now that the scale is starting to go down again. I am scheduled to see my Dr. on July 2nd. I'll make an appointment then for a fill. Here is how my life has changed in 6 mos: In July I weighed 290lbs! When I had surgery on Nov. 5, I weighted 272, I now weigh between 211 and 213. I used to wear 22-24W, now I can wear 16 regulars and I can actually zip 14's! My idea of exercise before was playing volleyball (not very strenuous, due to my size) of course it was usually followed with pizza and beer. Now I go to a fitness class 2X a week, and run 3-4X a week. Last night I walked to the school's track 1 mile from home, ran a mile in 11 min, walked a lap, then ran another mile. Then walked home! I would some day like to enter 5K races or even challenge myself to run a marathon. Volleyball starts again in 2 weeks, and I am actually looking forward to it. Much easier when I can move! Before I could care less what, or how I looked. Now I've gotten contacts and I actually like to wear clothes that fit me. My whole family is eating healthier. My Dh has lost 25 lbs. (I actually weigh less than he does! That has NEVER happened before) My daughter's are exercising and watching what they eat. We used to get fast food or eat out a lot. Now we cook at home and like to cook healthy meals. When we do eat out, it is a treat. Our bill is usually lower due to sharing meals, etc. My whole self-esteem is better. Although I get down at times, I am not as depressed as I was. I like being around people and getting out. It's nice getting compliments, although sometimes it does get old. Is there anything else to talk about other than my weight loss? Sorry this was so long, I had just written this in my diary so I thought I'd share. -

I'm hoping by the end of the week to make it to 209 we'll see. It was exciting once I started losing again. Felt like I did right after surgery when I would lose a lb every day or two! -

Hi. I've been reading your thread. I feel like you are talking about my dd. I also have a 10 yr old daughter who struggles with her weight. She has always been very tall, I think she is 5' and she weighs about 145. I have always tried not to put so much pressure on her regarding her weight. She does like sports and exercise, for she plays basketball and softball. She even signed up to play volleyball this year. I don't know why she got the gene to make her bigger. She's got two older sisters who don't weigh as much as she does so that makes it even worse. Since I've been banded there have been a lot of changes in our house. We used to eat out a lot, that doesn't happen any more. We all are eating healthier. I've been doing the couch to 5k program. When I run/walk, my dd will ride her bike and keep me going. It's been a lot of fun and we get some time together. She was so excited this morning. She came out of the bathroom and told me she made her goal and she is losing weight. I just gave her a hug and told her she is doing super. I don't want her to become so focused on weight and the scale, but to eat and live a healthy lifestyle. I also know how grandmother's can sabotoge. My mother-in-law has her snack drawer. It is filled with Cookies, granola bars, candy, chips, etc. lately she's been adding a few 100 cal. packs, but they aren't always the best either. If she hears that our dd is on a "diet" she will freak out and tell us it is wrong. Then my mom will ask how we are all doing, be all concerned about our weights, and then cook us a huge meal with lots of comfort food that isn't really healthy. (We still love them though.) Good luck with WW and with your dd. If she is motivated it will make it much better. I remember my first WW meeting, it was scary and I was in my teens. But WW has definately changed since then. Keep us posted on her progress.

Hi. I've been lurking and watching everyone talk about the couch to 5k. Never thought I would be able to join in! I've actually been able to do a modified version of it. Our membership to a 24 hour gym expired and we didn't get signed up for more, so I've actually been running/walking outside. I mapped out a route that I take each day. We live on the edge of town, so I get to run on country roads so no one can see me huffing and puffing along. The best part is my daughter has been going with me (she rides her bike). It's fun because it is our time. She struggles with weight, and she is only 10. It has given her so much confidence and we keep each other going. I don't have a timer, so I just walk around the circle to warm-up, it takes me 5 minutes, then I walk/run for 3 miles. The first day I thought I would die! It has gotten so much easier. I just try to beat my time each day we go out. My best time so far was about 45 minutes. I have always played either volleyball or softball. NEVER running. I am actually liking it. I am sitting here at work dreaming of when I can go home and go for my run. That would have never happened 6 months ago. I probably was dreaming of what I could eat and gorge on. I like the idea of signing up for races just to keep me motivated. I'll have to check into it. My goal right now it to just be able to run the whole 3 miles. LJM I love WDW some year it would be so much fun to be able to run the marathon. Keep us posted, how do you even begin to train for one? I've read your blog, you are a great inspiration!

Wow! You look awesome! I can't wait until I can say I have almost lost 100 lbs. Your smile just beams! Good work! I love your work out top! I have always exercised, but only in very large T-shirts and baggy sweats. Now it is fun to actually wear exercise clothes and have them look good! What do you do for exercise? -
Eating at disney while banded
wnt2lose replied to devonaravenhold's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My family will be at WDW in November during T-giving week. Already been planning. Anyway we generally get a meal plan when we go. This year we still got one, but I plan to share a lot of my meals with others and let the credits get spread out. If we go to a buffet it has already been paid for, so I will just eat what I can and not worry about it. You can find pretty healthy stuff now. Not just burgers, fries, and junk. Have fun! I love WDW. I just keep thinking how much easier it will be not lugging around all my old weight. -
I actually go to two types of support groups. One is with a nurse/counselor. This was part of the process and is required. I love these meetings. Usually 10 people or less are there. She deals with the emotional side of weight loss surgery. She herself had RNY a few years ago, so she definately knows what she is talking about. Another one I go to is held at a local hospital two nights a month. This is open to anyone. When I first started going I met another lady who had lap-band surgery in July. We've become good friends and became our mini-support group. Because both RNY and lap-band patients are there, sometimes the topic doesn't apply to me. It is also sometimes difficult to hear how fast and how much RNY'ers are losing. I keep telling me I will catch up and I will get there some day. But I still like going. It keeps me accountable and keeps me going. I like meeting other people and making new friends. It doesn't matter what surgry we've had, we still deal with new emotions, new eating behaviors, new reactions from others, etc. that it is good to hear from others and learn together.

I love my Dr. He doesn't run by a strict schedule, I can get a fill when I feel I need it. I had surgery in Nov. My first fill wasn't until Feb. I have 2cc in a 4cc band and I feel really good. I definately have restriction, but I do not have any trouble with any food. I am able to eat meat, chicken, and some bread. I definately eat way smaller than before and something must be working, I've lost 73 lbs. 57 since surgery. I just saw him last week. He is really happy with my progress and told me he will see me in 3 months. If I feel like I should need anything before then, just give him a call.

This is a little scary. First pic was taken the end of Sept. I think I weighed about 287 lbs. then. Second pic was taken two days ago. 5 months after surgery. I now weigh 217. -
Let me try this again. Green shirt was taken two months before surgery when I started the process. Gray tank taken 5 months after surgery. I had surgery on Nov. 5th.

My final straw moment happened to me when we were vacationing in Rocky Mountain National Park last summer. I was sitting there looking out at the beautiful mountains after a horrible hike thinking I was going to die. I spent a lot of time that trip watching instead of participating, so it was then that I decided something must be done. Came home and started researching the band again. Had looked at it the following summer but talked myself out of it. Soon got the ball rolling and had surgery Nov. 5th. I woke up in the recovery room with a picture of the mountains on the ceiling. It was my sign that this is what I needed to do!

Several NSV's recently. Went to Old Navy a couple of weeks ago with my daughters. I have NEVER been able to buy anything from this store, even their so called plus size department. One time I bought a pair of men's XXL pajama pants, anyway I found a shirt on their clearance rack for $5 that fit. It was a regular XL. Love getting clothes off the clearance rack that fit! The best NSV for me... I now weigh less than my dh! That has also been something that has NEVER happened to me. Of course now he's losing weight, so that may not last long.
