Super Nurses With Sleeves (Support Group)

Sleeved July 14th and I was 314 surgery day. I'm currently 294 but I've been stalled so I've been at 294 since last Monday. Kinda frustrating.... I have lost 65 lbs since I started this journey so maybe my body is like whoa wait a minute. Who knows?!?!?!

    Clothes opinions

I started at 360 and am now at 295. I was wearing a 26. They are loose and I can fit into my 24, but it is true that the bigger the size your are the more weight you lose before you go down in size.

    Wanting icecream

I don't think "ice cream" is on any surgeon's list of permitted foods during the "full liquids" post-op stage two. Anybody know different? I wasn't telling her it was on her surgeon's approved list but it technically is a FULL LIQUID. It would be up to her to make good choices as it is for all of us when we are on this journey.

    Wanting icecream

You know it's not on the list because it's not a healthy choice for people trying to make a significant change. It's high fat, high sugar and high calorie, and for most a huge trigger food... I am not advocating eating it, But if you ate it is not going to hurt your new stomachs incision line. As a nurse ice cream is often given to people on full liquid diets because it's easy on the digestive system, but once again probably not a good choice for someone who has just had a weight loss procedure.

    Wanting icecream

I wouldn't at this point because sweets can be a trigger, but ice cream is ok on a full liquid diet not a clear.

    Time off

I work for a big hospital so when I requested FMLA for my surgery I had to call our leave administration office. I did have to tell them but they were faceless people. My manager did have to sign a paper that was part of the fmla but it didn't say what I was having. As far as after surgery... My leave was for 6weeks,(I'm a nurse in a busy NICU so my job is demanding) but I'm a little over two weeks out and I feel great!! I have not had any complications and minimal pain. Having said that you can never be sure how your postoperative course is going to go everyone is different.

    Slow weight loss?

    Slow weight loss?

They strips that you buy in the diabetic area of Walgreens/CVS/walmart. You pee on them!! If you are eating low carb and have used all your stored carbohydrates in your body your body will the start to use fat as it's primary source of energy. The byproduct of that process is ketones which the strips measure letting you know that you are burning fat for energy. You can learn about it by reading a multitude of books ... most notable is Adkins new diet revolution or google it.

    JULY 2014 SLEEVERS GROUP

I'm not eating solids yet but I'm 2 weeks out tomorrow and I can drink a fair amount of liquids at once which makes me worry too!!
  16. I forgot to say I started at 360 I had my surgery July 14... My surgery weight was was 314( I had to do a 2 wk liquid diet preop) and today I weighed 297. I'm 37 pounds from losing 100 lbs and most of that happened prior to having the surgery... Starting off in good place just means you will have less to lose before you get to whatever goal you set. It puts you in a good frame of mind.
  17. I have Coventry insurance. I'm 5ft 6. I started at 360 my BMI WAS > 50. I only had to do a 3 month supervised diet. I saw a nutritionist once a month. At my first visit I had already lost 11 pounds. She made a comment that this was great because Dr Hawver my surgeon likes to see at least 10 lbs lost each month. Now the supervised diet was only 1300 cal and at my size that was going to make me lose weight. I lost a total of 35 pounds by the time they submitted my letter for approval which came back approved in two days... I joked that my insurance must have thought I was going kiel over dead soon if I didn't have this surgery or they'd soon be paying for lots of health problems. I'm currently pretty healthy besides being overweight. As a matter of fact my surgeon made me sign a paper that stated I would not gain any weight from the weight I was at my initial visit or she would not do the surgery even if it was approved. I could have lost 25 percent of my weight and my BMI would have still qualified me. I know this is a little sketchy for people that their BMIs are close to the cut offs. These cut offs are set by the NHI and the AMA. When they classified obesity as a disease and defined what persons would benefit from WLS they used the minimum BMI OF 35 with comorbidities and 40 without as what was the standard medical professionals should use for assessing potential candidates for these surgeries which in turn is why the insurance industry uses these parameters or they would be paying for the crazy wack a do people who would do something this drastic to lose 10 lbs... Having said all that insurance companies are all different and even if you know someone with the same carrier you could and probably do still have different coverage because it's based on what your employer has picked when designing their plan. Good luck and I hope it works out for you.

    Scar healing

If you push on it and can feel it being pushed back in (reducing) then it's a hernia. I don't have any lumps that big but I can feel hard tissue under my laparoscopic sites. It's more than likely just healing scar tissue. To help that you can massage those areas and the hardness will decrease over time.

    Self pay question

Hospitals do that, but it is income based and while I know we don't feel that this an elective surgery it is still viewed that way so I am not so sure a hospital will qualify it for charity care funds. Those funds are usually used for emergencies and on the medically underserved. Just my two cents
  20. I started my journey secretively mostly because I knew my husband would not be on board and I didn't want the confrontation.... I did all the preop stuff without saying anything. Sometimes I operate from a place it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission. I know probably not the best approach but while I'm sure he wished I wasn't like that we've been married for 17 years so I'm unlikely to change anytime soon... Well 2 days after they submitted all my preop to my insurance they called to say it was approved. So now I had to talk to him. My initial conversation happened via text message I know this might sound crazy but in my mind it would be more neutral and less confrontational and given is initial text back to me it's probably best that I took this approach because if we had been faced to face an argument would have happened and no productive conversation would have ever happened. While the text message was productive he was still not ok with it. I need to say that I am 38 and besides my weight (my starting weight was 360) I'm healthy. I don't have diabetes, HTN, or OSA, but my grandma died at the age of 66. She was significantly overweight and all the complications associated with being that heavy for a long time. I verbalized to him that my life is half over if I go down the same path as my grandma. He said your not you grandma. I said not yet and I don't want to be... I followed that with I love you, but I don't need your permission, but I want your support. When I got home he hugged me, but we didn't talk again about it. Then came the preop consent from the surgeon's office. It was 9 pages long and even though I'm a nurse it freaked me out... I had never seen a consent form that was so detailed. The very last page was for the spouse... He actually had to consent to my surgery or my surgeon would not do the surgery. I was like are you f'ing kidding me if that consent scarf me it's going to send him over the edge and he was just getting on board. I will say his potion of the consent had a lot to do with what your husband is concerned with potential failure and that a significant others support is integral to success. Since our initial text conversation we had several very loving, meaningful conversation that helped him see my point of view and come to a better place. His biggest fear wasn't that I wouldn't be successful or that I didn't understand this wasn't a quick fix, but that this was elective and permanent and what if I had a bad complication or worse died. All legitimate fears and he wasn't the only one having them. I think it's only natural to have those concerns. He signed the consent and went to my final surgeon's visit and we set a date. He also went to my PMD visit when I got my medical clearance. He really respects and likes our primary doctor. They had a long talk about how if I was going to do this surgery (she was on board and supportive of the decision) now was the time to do it because I'm young and I have no comorbities making this surgery the safest it's going to be and potentially the most successful it's going to be. I had my surgery on 7/14/14 Feb 6 initial visit: 360 Last surgeons visit: 334 Surgery weight: after preop diet 314 Current weight: according to my scale 297.4 That's a long story, but the gist is my husband wasn't on board and I obviously don't know your entire situation, but I'm just guessing that there is conflict making it difficult to have productive conversations. For me I knew that was going to be an issue because my husband always initially comes from a place of NO... I think this is his way of putting brakes on things because I always go head first into everything and he needs time to process. My point is if this the case for you find a way to express yourself fully to him in the Least confrontational way possible maybe in a letter, email or text message. It's way easier to make yourself vulnerable when somebody is not staring at you. I verbalized things to my husband that he had no idea I was feeling because despite my weight I'm a fairly confident extrovert. He had no idea that it was bothering me. That is how much I did not talk about it. GOOD LUCK, he will come around!!!
  21. Change is difficult... You are changing and that means they will have to when it come to interacting with you... It's not nice to hear your family is not supporting you but you have to do what you feel is right for yourself and eventually they will get on board.

    OMG i just

Good for you!! I'm almost two weeks out from surgery... I had to do a two wk liquid diet prior and that encompassed my birthday and the fourth. I did not cheat!!! I am still on a liquid diet and I will be till I see the surgeon on the 30th. I feel so good since I had the surgery not being able to eat has been rough. I'm not hungry but I just want something different. I am lucky that I can have yogurt and SF pudding but after almost a month it is getting old. My family has hugely benefitted because I've become obsessed with food TV (sadistic I know) and they have had a home cooked meal every night for the last week and half and yes that is how good I feel since surgery. All I can say is I am really looking forward to my appointment and pureed food, which previously didn't think I wanted to do.... I was just going to keep doing liquids and wait for soft foods, but now pureed sounds great!!!'
