2.5 weeks post op, spend the night in ICU
TackleType1 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Had just gone for my two-week follow up visit and the doc said I was doing great, but the next day, my blood sugar elevated and I started.with lots of nausea and general ill feeling. Ended up in ER and spent one night in ICU and one night on the digestive floor before they released me. Diagnosed with DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) and some mysterious infection that caused my WBCs to skyrocket, hence causing my BS to rise causing the DKA. They performed a leak test and said I passed that. Gave me soooo much fluid that when I got home, I weighed 19 lbs more then I went in! Now, it's hard to breathe and I still feel horrible. I also ate some chicken broth in the hospital and 4 days later, I'm still burping it. I'm vomiting pills and even water sometimes. I'm pretty miserable .... Has anyone experienced anything similar or have any thoughts? Thank you! -

I had nausea bad but it was more like motion sickness. They put a patch behind me ear and that took care it so much more than Zofran! -
HI, I'm on day 5 from post-op, but each am, I wake up like I am in a room full of smoke. Everything is fuzzy and it takes about 1-1/2 hrs to clear up? I'm getting plenty of liquids in and protein shakes. I'm also spilling large amounts of ketones in my urine, but doc seems to think that is normal (ketones break down the fat!) but can be dangerous with folks who are type 1 diabetics like me. Need to look out for vomiting and more nausea. Just wondering about the fuzzy vision in the am... Anyone else have that? Six holes in my belly, but all are good but one... Still sore in one spot so that must be the one where they pulled my stomach out of!!

Fuzzy vision on the am?

Good to hear that others have seen this. Probably leftovers due to anesthesia. surgeon hasn't answered me yet on this one. I called today and he hasn't called back. Diabetes doc was the one who said ketones was normal. thanks! -
Post Op June 2014 Sleevers
TackleType1 replied to KimGettingSlim's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on Wed, June 11. Spent two nights in the hospital, mainly due to nausea. My nausea didn't come from water, I felt it was from anesthesia because it felt more like motion sickness. They put a patch behind my ear and it subsided quickly! Also started getting bad pains in my shoulder that the pain pills weren't touching. Nurse explained it was probably gas buildup from surgery that "settled" in my shoulder. She gave me a heating pad and it went away. I have 6 incisions in my belly and only 1 of them hurts now. Figured it was the one they pulled my stomach thru! Hard to stand up, but once I start walking, it gets better. I was on puréed foods in the hospital, put in jello shooter containers for me! Could only get a couple bites in so glad I didn't waste too much. Using the Unjury protein shakes...very good! I have lots of heartburn even though I'm sipping slowly. All in all, I'm doing very well and just looking forward to the incision pain to subside and I'll be good to go!! -
Am I the only one who kinda likes the gurgling tummy?

I have that gargling too. Hope it subsides! -

I'm scheduled for June 4th, too. Seems like a lot of us. Doc says I need an Upper GI prior to, and he also does a sonogram on your gallbladder and will remove during surgery if there are stones present with or without symptoms. I'm a type 1 diabetic with a BMI of 37.5. Looking to cure my sleep apnea and get my diabetes back in check. I don't have to do the liver reducing diet so glad of that!

Thank you for the reply. Did you experience a lot of lows during the first two weeks?

Sleeve Surgery is planned for June 4. I'm a Type 1 diabetic with an insulin pump. What can I expect the first week as far as eating, special things to do to help, what others with Type 1 have done with insulin, etc. Thanks!!
