    Proteinaholic by Dr Garth Davis

i haven’t read the book so I can’t comment on it. I’ve been pretty much a vegan since before my GBS. I get blood work every six months and every time my test have been good. It’s been over three years since my surgery and I take no medication. I always take my vitamins and administer a B-12 shot once a month. Best of luck in ya'll journey.
  2. Yes mrsroyale there’s a lot of us out here. In BariaticPal, I recommend you go to the forum, Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Groups, General Weight Loss Surgery Forums, Vegetarian or Vegan Eating. Good luck in your journey.

    Dental problems after RNY???

I had RNY done Aug 2014. I'm 63 yrs old and have no problems with my teeth. I have arthritis but that's because of my age. I take 500 mg of calcium three times a day as per my doctor and all is well.
  4. I have it and yes you just have to watch what you eat.

    Alcohol?

Hey guys, It's now to late for me because I'm now an alcoholic. Just to let you know it's intoxicatingly easy to fall into it if you go that way. You really don't want to do this. I've read that a GBP patient can easily fall into it but I ignored it. Now I have to figure out how to fix it. No need to preach because I'm not ready for that. I just wanted to let you know for me it was way to easy to fall into this.
  6. I didn't. I do a lot of bean meals that I love and have had blood work every six months. Blood results still looking good and I feel great.
  7. Here's a link to help you get started but there's much more. Just look it up on the web. http://www.onegreenplanet.org/natural-health/soy-free-vegan-foods-that-have-more-protein-than-beef/ Vegans eating varied diets containing vegetables, beans, grains, nuts, and seeds rarely have any difficulty getting enough protein as long as their diet contains enough energy (calories) to maintain weight. Only vitamin B12 will have to be supplemented. Good luck in your journey.
  8. I strived to go total vegan after my RNY but it took awhile to do it because of outside influences. I'm now thankfully a complete vegan. My PCP does my blood work every 6 months and I do my own injections of B12 once a month. Just so everyone knows, I feel great about it.

    High Alcohol Tolerance

Yes, that's happened to me too. I found myself drinking like a fish and had to stop before it got away from me.
  12. Not to far in the past I was a die hard vegan because of a significate emotional event I had involving animals. I got over the depression but I'm still passionate about animals so I stay in contact with animal right groups. PETA just put out a large list of vegan Protein mixes with ratings. If your interested the link is below. http://www.peta.org/living/food/pump-workouts-vegan-protein-powder/?utm_campaign=110514&utm_source=PETA%20E-Mail&utm_medium=Living%20E-News

    Backwards question?

You've asked a good question. You should remember we're all different. For just me, I'm now over a year with my GBS. I eat everything I want to eat. But I've already made my life change and decided to eat smartly. Sure I've cheated, most of us will. Because of my body's reaction to the surgery I suffer from hypoglycemia, so I have a different way of dealing with our life change. Like I said I eat everything I want but I hurt inside when I do stupid things. It helps me, but I know if I didn't stay active I would of already gained most of my weight back. My advice to you is enjoy your new self and sample the decadent pleasures but remember you will have to pay the price. Work out and figure out what you have to do to maintain or continue to loose. Good luck and remember what you went through to get this far.

    The bills are rolling in

No offense Cheri J. You've deleted your commit. I see so many struggling to try and find a way to get the surgery done that I reacted negatively. Congratulations on your surgery, stay focused on your goal and best of luck.

I think you shouldn't brag about your fortune.

    Alcohol

You're crazy to even think it this early out. Give it time and ask your Doctor when you can do that shot.

    strange symptoms similar to diabetes!

You don't say what your blood sugar is. I get this and it's because of low sugar levels.

    Tricare and B12 injections

No, I only use the base for my meds and sometimes shots. I just get a prescription and take it into the pharmacy.
  20. For you guys that have Tricare and live near a military installation, the hospital carries B12 injections. I have my doctor write the perception. It's free you know.

    Low blood sugar

I've now been diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia from my GB surgery. It's not really a big thing to me but I have to eat more often, just little meals with complex carb included. I'm lucky that my PCP's mother had the surgery when he was a little boy and knew all about it. I found out when my blood surgery was dropping to the 40s and 50s after I was eating sweets, (dumb I know), and I could really feel the symptoms. I've been playing with the clock now to see my time I need for meals and how complex carbs affects it. I was amazed at how little was required to stop my shakes when my sugar was low. As of now I can go without a meal for around 4 to 5 hours but it depends on my activity level too. My doctor's mother had to eat every two hours and drink a complex carb mix before bed. Luckily I'm not there yet. For everyone out there that has this or will experience low blood sugar you'll be forced to a strict diet and fined out sweets aren't your favorite friend any longer. Best of luck on your journey.

    Nutrition/diet/dumping syndrome?

I can't say yet that I've been around the block on this journey but I can talk about my experience with dumping. I started in the hospital during recovery when they gave me two cups of Apple sauce. Me thinking it was ok since I was in the hospital ate it. After that time I worked on figuring out how much sugar I could have and it worked out to around 3 to 5 grams. Not much and it did catch me sometimes when I didn't read a label. It wasn't long before it figured out that dumping was a great way to loss weight and stop the hard bowel movements. I progressed this way for around six months and then the dumping stopped. In its place came reactive hypoglycemia. It's a terrible sickening feeling and forces me to stay away from strong sweets. I'm not saying this will happen to you because many of us don't get dumping I'm just telling you my experience. Best of luck to you.

What will happen if I drink caffeine?

I recommend waiting a little longer to drink your first cup. I started coffee back up 2 months after the BS and now drink it every day with no problems.

    Dump syndrome?

@@ymouton 2013 is a long time dumping. If you dump on everything you eat than you need to talk to your doctor because probably something's wrong. But if it's only certain things you eat than you have to stop eating them. I dump and although I still don't know everything that does it I know if it has high sugar or fat I better be near a toilet. A layman's opinion.
  25. I've seen this subject somewhere else before but I can't find it, perhaps it was on another WLS site. I'm concerned about how much weight I should lose. My personal goal is 165 because of the BMI for someone 5'10". Is this too much? I still have 17 pounds to go but my bones are starting to show. When I told my physical therapist I had that much more to lose he asked me where I plan to lose it. I'm thinking about changing my personal goal because of this and my sister's statement to the same effect. I am to close to meeting two more goals to stop now. I have one more pound to meet my surgeons goal and I have one more pound after that to say I lost one hundred pounds, that would be nice. I've read here that my body will stop losing weight on is own when it's lost enough and I probably should just wait for that but my thought is I can stop losing weight anytime I want. So, how much is to much?
