Anyone having surgery in May
Pretty Blue 1969 replied to Cupcake's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, this makes more sense to me now. You are more than likely experiencing the same thing I did in the hospital. They would not let me go home until I could tolerate liquids, which took me an entire week to get close to what the expectation was. I hope you're not being hard on yourself. The highs and lows of this entire process is not what I had expected. I think my mindset was, have the surgery and then everything else will be okay. This is by far one of the most difficult things I have ever done in my life. I left inside when I hear people say this process is an easy way out. They have no idea. The Roux-en-Y operation is basically to allow your body to starve itself for weight loss. It uses the fat storage for energy. It does not hold onto the fat. I feel your pain, it will get better in some aspects and then eventually in all aspects. We have to be patient. I guess I just was not fully prepared for issues with my pouch. You don't hear about these things in all of the classes that are required to take before you can have the operation. -

The look on my surgeons face was of great concern. It's been a long painful process and I've been so incredibly discouraged. I'd like to get back to work but my intake has to improve. When I was in the hospital my surgeon reassured me my pouch will open up and I feel that it has BUT, the desire and hunger is lacking. I read some people experience hunger all the time. That is NOT my case. The Bariatric dietician suggested I set an alarm throughout day to use as an electronic hunger signal. Makes sense to me so I tried it but when my alarm goes off my stomach hurts from the last intake which is half the portion expected of me. Needless to say I'm very discouraged. -

Hanny, I had surgery May 20th and got out of hospital May 28th. I had a hard time with fluids post op. In 1 month I've lost 42 pounds courtesy of my issues. -

I am having a tough time! I've tried moist chicken breast and juicy turkey tenderloin. Both made me hurt and I would have thick mucus come up for a good hour or better afterward. I have found shrimp to be helpful. It doesn't hurt me and I keep it down. 3oz = 100 calories and 19 grams protein. I put it on top of iceberg lettuce, chopped grape tomato, chopped cucumber, 2 oz fat free feta, and vinegarette. This is the ONLY working meal for me. I rely on my EAS Carb Control Protein shakes to help get calories in. I'm not quite up to. 400 calories yet and my surgery was May 20th. Oh, mashed avocado, scrambled egg, and Lactaid Cottage Cheese are in my diet too that settle well with me. How about you? -

I'm on puréed diet now and taking in less calories than on the liquid diet. I seem to tolerate Lactaid cottage cheese and scrambled eggs only... At my two week post op I had lost a total of 31# and I feel a difference when I walk around now, cannot imagine how I will feel with a bulk of weight off me. I wish I was over the dizzy spells so I could drive. I knew this was going to be hard but had no idea the depth it would be. I hope this gets better soon :/ -

Ok so I've got to put this out there to find out if any one else is having issues with bowel movements... I apologize in advance. No matter what I put in my mouth right down to water.. Shortly after I have to have a bowel movement and it's not a normal one. My belly gurgles like I'm going to explode but then minimal comes at a time and almost snotty in consistency. It's preventing me from going for walks like I should. When I went to walmart with my daughter yesterday I had to go there twice!!! I'm so discouraged and beside myself I can hardly stand it! -

I had my surgery May 20. I was in the hospital for seven days because I could not tolerate liquids. I stayed on IV fluids for the first six days and on the seventh day I was able to tolerate fluids on my own. I am on full liquids now, and tolerating them well. I still get sharp pains in my left side but was told it is gas. I find a heating pad helps get through those times. My belly gurgles a lot and I have soreness throughout my abdomen, but is progressively getting better as the days go by praise God! My starting weight was 304 pounds at the beginning of my two week preoperative liquid diet, and today I weigh 270 pounds! My first post operative follow up visit with my surgeon is June 6. I am ready for some sort of normalization back in my life. I get tired very easily, it doesn't measure up to what my brain wants to do. My daughter took me to Walmart this morning so I could walk around, I wasn't there for very long before I started to sweat and become very tired. Having lost the 34 pounds, I feel like I have more energy, but my body cannot keep up. I put a dress on today that I had out grown, and it fits perfectly! What a great feeling, and I know there is more to come! I am having an issue with wearing my bra. I had the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass done and the pouch sits right below my bra and it is irritating to me. Does anyone else have this issue? -

Well that's good! Glad you have something to control nausea at home. I cannot imagine feeling hungry though. I have no interest in anything and will be a full time job to put in the minimal nutritional requirement when ever I get to go home. I hope it gets better for you. -

I had my surgery May 20th and am still in the hospital. I had gastric bypass done and could not tolerate liquids. I've been getting zofran every 4 hours around the clock since surgery, I have a scopolamine patch behind my ear, and as needed reglan and phenergan. It's been aweful for me too. My hands and feet are swollen from IV fluids since Tuesday. I did better today with my fluids so I'm hoping they'll let me go home tomorrow. Did they give you a prescription to control nausea at home? -

Hi Patticakes my surgeon is Dr Harnish at Ft Sam Houston Hospital. I've been on a liquid diet almost 2 full weeks, the day of surgery will be 2 weeks. I've been faithful and haven't cheated on the restrictions. I've dropped 15 # as of yesterday. It hasn't been easy, at times extremely difficult but I figured if I cheat on the diet, I cheat myself. How about you? Where are you from?
